I really enjoyed the story in this book. Good twists and turns to it with just enough spice to mix up your traditional western theme. Jimmy was a good, strong character who was reliable and slightly mysterious at the same time. Adelaide was feisty but sweet. There wasn't too much concentration on them falling in love, but they did respond well together. There were a lot of side characters, but they were all nicely "default" characters so you didn't get too confused (aka, you knew they were good or bad and that was most of their purpose). I would have liked it to be a little more flushed out though with greater detail and smoother flow. I felt like it could have been a longer and fuller book.
Payroll is a good and quick read if you do not have a lot of time to get into a novel. It is not a romance in the general sense of the romance genre now days but it is still has the love story.
