The Unlikely Vamp by Scarlet Blackwell - Zacariah is a shy vamp who has his servant bring him home a willing dinner. Unexpectedly, Andrew shows up for dinner, Zacariah is NOT gay, he's sure. I liked how this tipped things with the human pursuing him, having seen him in a vamp club. Sort of a GFY in reverse.

Sacrifice by J.L. Merrow - Hearing tales of virgin sacrifice at the stone circles from his mother, Damien is determined to sacrifice his own virginity to gain back what he lacks after his rich father's rejection of him when he came out. He picks up Rafe in a bar and has it all figured out. But maybe the riches he'll gain aren't monetary after all, but something deeper with Rafe. A cute story.

One Last Wish by Josephine Myles - A retelling of the genie in the lamp, when surfer dude Scott finds Xavier and his lamp. Rather than wish for things for himself, he eventually frees Xavier who grants Scott a few extra wishes. *eyebrow waggle*

Mayan Time by Erik Orrantia - Shane has always been compelled to travel to Mexico and visit the temples despite the misgivings on his family and boyfriend's parts. In a temple finds Hanab, his lover he left centuries ago to travel through time. To be honest I was a bit confused here as I wasn't sure he stayed, left, what really happened or was happening. I don't deal well with that kind of paranormal brain twisting. :-)

Fire Can Make Rain by Nix Winter - This is a fantasy story set in a kingdom experiencing a severe drought. To make it rain a prince must marry a virgin bard. Jewls is chosen and he's nervous but it turns out his husband has been watching him and wanting him for some time and must soothe his fears of their wedding night (which comes complete with an audience).

The Hunter & the Hunted by Stevie Woods - Damian is a vamp who's been pursued by hunter Aaron for some time. He tends to toy with him, often ending up in bed which makes Aaron nuts. Finally when Aaron knows that Damian could kill him anytime he wants, he tries to understand why and is surprised that vamps have feelings and fall in love too.

These were all pretty good little reads all by some m/m authors I've enjoyed or heard good things about. They are very short but on the whole I enjoyed them and they are like a nice light snack when you need a break and hey, as I said FREE!!!!

The Unlikely Vampire by Scarlet Blackwell: [2 stars] Really not much to this story. No plot - just a vamp and donor quick read.

Sacrifice by J.L. Merrow: [3 stars] Pretty good story about one man needing to perform a ritual at a magical site in order to get wealth beyond his imagination.

One Last Wish by Josephine Myles: [3.5 stars] Very cute story about a genie (djinni) and his master, Scott. Scott seems like a really sweet guy and I liked his character a lot. A very short story, but a quick, interesting read.

Mayan Time by Erik Orrantia: [2 stars] This story was okay. It was a little confusing. Not one of my favorites in the book.

Fire Can Make Rain by Nix Winter: [3.5 stars] This was an interesting story line. A bard and a prince must wed in order to please the gods and bring the rain. It was basically just a quick ceremonial marriage consummation scene, but I liked Prince Rand of Valion and he made the story romantic. Jewls' description was very lovely, and I appreciated that Rand has seen Jewls play in the past and is already smitten.

The Hunter & the Hunted by Stevie Woods: [3.5 stars] I really liked this story about a vamp and a vampire hunter. Who is the predator and who is the prey? It was going really well up until the very end. It just seemed to end a little bit abruptly for me. I would've enjoyed a longer novella about these two characters.

Overall, this was a 3.5 bumped up to a 4

The Unlikely Vampire by Scarlet Blackwell--4*--I liked this story. Sweet story about a human pursuing a straight vampire and showing him what he was missing.
Sacrifice by J.L. Merrow--3*--MC basically sacrifices his virginity to cleanse himself of all of the negativity surrounding his relationship with his emotionally distant and disappointed father.
One Last Wish by Josephine Myles--4*--Sweet genie story. Pretty cliche with the master wishing freedom for the genie but cute and sexy none the less.
Mayan Time by Erik Orrantia--2*--Not my cup of tea. Seemed a bit short without getting to real depths of where the story could have gone. Not a fan of cheating but would have liked more back story to understand it better.
Fire Can Make It Rain by Nix Winter--3*--Not my favorite in the volume but still a good read. Story about a marriage ritual between a prince and a bard. While history dictated forced marriages (from what I am gathering), it was nice to see that love was possible and that this one was planned nicely.
The Hunter & the Hunted by Stevie Woods--5*--Really loved this story. Thought it was a great use of the Vampire vs. Hunter theme.

I'm a fan of m/m anthologies, especially free m/m anthologies, so I was happy to discover the "Just One Bite" collections on ARe. This first volume contains six stories, all very different in tone and subject matter:

"The Unlikely Vampire" by Scarlet Blackwell - 3 stars. Cute and very silly.

"Sacrifice" by J.L. Merrow - 3.25 stars. It was too short to feel much connection to the characters, but Merrow's writing is always pleasant and often poignant.

"One Last Wish" by Josephine Myles - 3.5 stars. Myles' short stories always make me smile, and this was no exception. Besides, I have a soft spot for Djinn.

"Mayan Time" by Erik Orrantia - 1 star. Textbook-dry writing and a complete lack of character development ruined this story. Which is really too bad, because the concept was interesting.

"Fire Can Make It Rain" by Nix Winter - 2.5 stars. Two much world building for such a short story, but I wouldn't mind reading a longer work set in this world.

"The Hunter & the Hunted" by Stevie Woods - 2.5 stars. Not bad, but there was nothing original about this story, and the dialog felt stilted.

I'm going to do what I did with the other anthologies and rate it as a whole rather than each individual story. I thought the collection flowed well, and that there was a good balance of sub-genres and even pov among the stories.

As happens with all anthologies, I liked some stories more than others. My favorites in this one were One Last Wish and Hunter and Hunted, both of which I would actually love to see in a longer version.

I enjoyed this quick free read from ARE. My favorites were 'The Unlikely Vamp' by Scarlet Blackwell and 'The Hunter and the Hunted' by Stevie Woods. I was also fascinated with 'Fire Can Make Rain' by Nix Winter. Made me wish they were longer!

I've never read anything by Stevie Woods or Nix Winter before, so I'm looking forward to seeing what else they have published.

The stories in this anthology were great but the stand out story for me was
The Hunter And The Hunted by Stevie Woods. I read it twice. :) The conflict was brilliant and the story fabulous. Now I'm off to check out more Stevie Woods books.

This collection is from All Romance eBooks and was free. All are m/m short stories. My absolute favorite short story in the collection would have to be “The Hunter and the Hunted” by Stevie Woods.

The Unlikely Vamp by Scarlet Blackwell

When Zachariah Sayle’s manservant brought dinner, the vampire was shocked to discover that the blood donor was male. Andrew definitely wasn’t his type considering the sexual component of feeding.

Zach is remarkably shy for a vampire who has existed since the Victorian age. Andrew has an agenda that borders on stalking, but that might be simply due to the very short format. The writing is descriptive, but I found the characters difficult to relate to, weakening the story enjoyment. 3 out of 5.

Sacrifice by J. L. Merrow

Damien was desperate to regain all he had lost. With the help of Rafe, a stranger he picked up in a bar, and the magic circle of stones, he might be able to find a solution.

Well constructed, we really get a sense of who these two young men are and what they could become to each other. Very enjoyable. 3.5 out of 5.

One Last Wish by Josephine Myles

When Xavier is released from his bottle prison after centuries, he never expected a master like Scott, a man happy with his life. Just how will Scott use his three wishes?

Sweet and funny. 3.5 out of 5.

Mayan Time by Erik Orrantia

Shane followed his deep Mexican roots to the Temple of the Jaguar just as the Mayan calendar was ending, believed to be the moment when two worlds combine. He never imagined what he would discover there.

Fascinating idea that suffered by the restricted length. We learn a bit about Shane, but nothing about Hanab and Bahlum and why they made the decisions they did. 3.5 out of 5.

Fire Can Make It Rain by Nix Winter

Deep within a time of drought, only the ritual marriage of a bard and a prince may appease the gods. Jewls the Lucky of the House of Fire, Guilty of Contempt is the fiery redheaded bard, destined to marry Prince Rand of Valion.

A great buildup, but a bit too quick on the ending. So many mysteries to explore. 3.5 out of 5

The Hunter & the Hunted by Stevie Woods

Hunters go after vampires in an effort to eradicate them. The hunted vampires kill these humans to survive. But when Aaron Beamish and his vampire target, Damien, meet, the hunt becomes more of a sexual dance.

This really is the start of a beautiful friendship, not to mention an equally wonderful love affair. I do wonder what other vampires and human hunters will think about this partnership? 3.5 out of 5.

Various authors, Just One Bite
Too short for my liking, but the stories are all good

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 7/10

PROS:
- Each of the stories is well written; that is, I didn’t find any of them amateurish or wooden or chock-full of typos and such. Granted, this is the first I’ve read by most of these writers, but they all seem to be promising authors.
- There are some amusing little moments throughout the collection, as well as some pretty vivid characterization given how short the stories are.
- None of the sex scenes are very long, but several of them are hot.

CONS:
- Although the stories are well written--all of them--they simply weren’t long or involved enough for me to love any of them.
- I’m the sort of person who prefers HEA endings over HFNs, and not one of the stories here has a Happily Ever After that I truly believed in. Of the stories that do have HEAs, I didn’t see enough emotional attachment between the characters to truly believe that they could be happy together forever.

Overall comments: I thought each of these stories was entertaining, but they’re all so short that every one of them left me wanting more. Each one is essentially nothing more than a single scene (which is a good thing in a way; I didn’t feel that any of them tried to cram too much action into too short a story). I simply prefer stories that are longer because I like to see more of an emotional connection between the lead characters.

First 3 stories were great - last 3 were unfinished due to the reasons stated below. I can only do an average on the overall but the individual ratings are stated below. Overall is 3*.

THE UNLIKELY VAMPIRE BY SCARLET BLACKWELL PART OF JUST ONE BITE 1 - ANTH - vamp - really liked this one - 5*
JUST ONE BITE 1 - ANTH - SACRIFICE BY J.L. MERROW - PARA - really liked this one 5*
JUST ONE BITE 1 - ANTH - ONE LAST WISH BY JOSEPHINE MYLES - PARA - really liked this one 5*
MAYAN TIME BY ERIK ORRANTIA PART OF JUST ONE BITE 1 - ANTH - PARA - did not finish - got tired of the brand name dripping all over in a very very short story - what happens when someone does not know what a Bulova is along with the fact of how many people still wear wristwatches???? 1*
FIRE CAN MAKE IT RAIN BY NIX WINTER PART OF JUST ONE BITE 1 - ANTH - PARA - did not finish - few paragraphs read were really stupid 1*
THE HUNTER & THE HUNTED BY STEVIE WOODS PART OF JUST ONE BITE 1 - ANTH - PARA - did not finish - could not get into it 1*

These really are short stories - a few pages each. Good for reading on your phone in line at the post office, rather than being satisfying romances.

Unlikely Vamp - Zachariah is funny as a vampire who is a fussy, shy Victorian gentleman who is too shy to court his food and too polite to kill it.

Sacrifice - this one is a bit melancholy. It is more about Damian's relationship to his parents than what happens with Rafe.

One last wish - Scott meets a genie with a sad past and takes good care of him. Funny and sweet.

Mayan Time - this one I really didn't get.

Fire Can Make it Rain - Red-headed bard Jewls must marry a prince to appease the gods and make it rain. Some good world building and scene setting for such a short story.

The Hunter and the Hunted - this one is longer and more of a romance. Vampire hunter Aaron and vampire Damian work out over a series of meetings whether to kill each other or something else. I found it kind of pedestrian but it would probably be more satisfying to someone wanting a romance.

The Unlikely Vampire: Wow, that was extremely hot for such a short story. This is definitely one story I wish were longer. I do hope these two sexy guys ended up a mated couple!!

Sacrifice: A little to boring for my liking. The characters were really good and if this story would have been expanded on I think it had the making of a really good story.

One Last Wish: Funny short story of a compassionate and selfless man finding a lamp and rubbing it and a genie comes out and then making Xavier free and loved.

Mayan Time: I liked that Shane was meant for greater things but truly hated the ending. I wanted to know what everyone thought happened to Shane when he didn't return, especially Mike. Where did Chan and Shane go from there?

Fire Can Make It Rain: Weird but sweet story. I'm glad that Rand seemed to care so much about Jewls, but why would he only come to him once a month, why not be together for all times?

The Hunter & The Hunted: YES! Come home with me and I'll love you forever! Sexy little vampire and vampire hunter.

The Unlikely Vampire by Scarlett Blackwell

Well that was an unlikely story for sure. I'm flabbergasted. Yep. You read that right. I think I'd be a little offended if I hadn't laughed so hard.

Sacrifice by JL Merrow

Hmm. I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be incredibly romantic but it fell flat for me. I even feel a little cheated. Not my thing.

One Last Wish by Josephine Myles

Well. Rushed is the word that first comes to mind but it was so short I doubt there was any time to develop it anyway so I enjoyed it. I liked the compassion and sweetness showed.

Mayan Time by Erik Orrantia

Meh. Didn't do much for me.

Fire Can Make It Rain by Nix Winter

Really? I don't know if I should laugh or cry. Seriously. The dialog was atrocious. Wow.

The Hunter and The Hunted by Stevie Woods

Best story in this book by far. I have a thing for frenemies turned lovers and I just loved this couple. I didn't even mind the lack of sex. Too bad it was just a short.

Just One Bite, first volume contain six stories. All the stories in this book are smut based and very short so no way to get bored ;)

Every story is different. The Unlikely Vampire starting story of the book introduces a vampire who finds himself attracted to man while feeding. And that scene alone can make your toes tingle. The following stories all based on the concept of male/male romance but not all of them are vampire. A genie is particularly yumness.

For a little light reading this is recommended to 18 above readers who love mm romance.

3.5 stars for this collection of interesting short stories written by authors I wasn't familiar with. There was a good mix of paranormal characters - not just your normal vampires (tho I like those the best - see below).

My favorites were The Unlikely Vampire and The Hunter & the Hunted. I thought those two stories were well written given how brief they were. Both could definitely be expanded.

Overall this anthology was okay. I really only enjoyed two: The Unlikely Vampire and The Hunter & The Hunted. I wish those two had been longer in length. Then there were the complete misses: Sacrifice and Fire Can Make it Rain. Sacrifice seemed sort of silly to me and I didn't quite get the premise for Fire, it could have been better. The others weren't particularly memorable, I think Mayan Time could have been better if it were longer length and had more time to explain things.

A free read from All Romance. Admittedly, I don't normally seek out m/m romance. While the sex was hot, the stories themselves were almost too short to really connect to. Enjoyable, but nothing fantastic.

3. One Last Wish by Josephine Myles ***1/2
4. Mayan Time by Erik Orrantia ***
5. Fire Can Make It Rain by Nix Winter ***

These stories seemed like samples and they would have been rated higher if they'd been more flesh out and longer.

I wish I could have my time back.
Out of the six short tales, The Unlikely Vampire by Scarlet Blackwell and The Hunter & the Hunted by Stevie Woods are the only two worth stars at all.
With Stevie Woods read I wish there was more, as in a longer story, but it was still interesting.
the other four you can skip unless you have time to spare.

I do like a good anthology and this one had its good points. I enjoyed all the stories , some more than others, but that's always the way it is with anthologies. Some stories hit the mark. I won't list them, let you choose your own favorites. Read and enjoy.

Six short tales, not all vampire related as I thought from the title, but dealing with the druid stones, a djinni in a lamp, Mayan reincarnation, mythical bards and princes, and a couple of vampires!
Enjoyable stories, each one a fairly quick read, with varying degrees of sexiness.

This was a short collection of stories, mainly vampire ones, and mostly M/M romance. They weren't bad...but also did little to get my motor humming. I liked the fact that they were short, and each had it's own take on the Vampire mythos. All in all, worth reading once, but that's it.
