Can a hot fling on a Wyoming ranch lead to more than just sex?
Tired of bringing home unsatisfying and nameless men, Delia Hawthorne needs a change of pace. When her Aunt invites her to spend some time at their family’s Wyoming ranch, it takes little prodding for her to agree. Time away from work, bars and men is exactly the break she's been looking for.
When Delia arrives, she finds what she has come to a take-charge ranch hand Lucas Dane. Despite her Aunt’s warning of Lucas’ womanizing reputation, she decides he may be worth the risk. What starts out as just sex quickly turns into more—forcing Delia to choose between the guy she is falling in love with and her responsibilities back home. What's a city girl to do?
Emily Cale writes erotic romances in the contemporary, paranormal, and western genres.
Emily started writing in elementary school and continued through high school. Much to her family's dismay, she decided to go to college to major in creative writing. Years later, she would come to appreciate the scars she earned in that program and start writing again.
Emily currently lives in Pittsburgh, PA, with her husband in a house that their cat grudgingly shares with them. When not writing or reading, she can found curled up on the couch watching a movie.
It's a great SHORT read. Really liked the novella, wish it would have been longer. I would have liked to see more of a relationship building on feelings and emotions. The sex was scorching and I LOVE LUCAS!!!
This is my first time reading Ms. Cale and I will be sure to be on the look out for more.
I am torn between giving it 3 and 4 stars..... I give it 3 because it's a novella and I WANT MORE LUCAS AND DELIA...I give 4 because I LOVE Lucas, Delia, Aunt Erica and the rest of the secondary characters. I think Ms. Cale could really put out an awesome series of FULL LENGTH BOOKS with all the characters from Tamed.
This is a delightful new release from Breathless Press and it falls somewhere between a short story and a novella. It is erotic contemporary Western fiction, and the author has written with a great deal of confidence in her research. It reflects the work of a writer that is in touch with the context of the story and that, in my experience, helps the reader to take the work seriously.
It is a story of a professional woman who has built a business with her determination and hard work, who has sacrificed just about everything to be professionally successful. Together with her best friend and partner, she has carved out a very satisfying life for herself, having left her family in Wyoming almost as soon as she could. Now living in Portland, OR, she has cut off herself from her roots for a variety of reasons, most of which fall into the category of " . . . I'm just too busy to take a trip." The one area of her life, though, that really sucks is her love life. She has managed to find sexual partners but they are usually for one night only, and she has two or three bars where she frankly, trolls for men. That has become tiresome and unsatisfying. In spite of having achieved many of her goals, she is deeply weary and unsatisfied with her life overall. Enter the loving but intrusive aunt--the person who has probably been most influential in Delia's later growing up years when she spent summers on their ranch in Wyoming.
Lucas Dane is a man who has been in Wyoming all his life, loves the Big Sky Country, is nearly expert in raising horses, and loves working for Delia's aunt and uncle. He is tall and muscular, good looking in a rugged sort of way, and Delia is immediately attracted to him. But she doesn't want to be. He, too, sees her when she is exiting her aunt's car upon her arrival, wearing her city casual wear, totally infit for even walking around in the front yard. She had forgotten how hard it is to walk to the barn in spike heels. Thus, Lucas begins to call her "city girl."
This is a very engaging story that deals with some of the lifestyle issues that single professional women face--how to balance their professional responsibilities while finding ways to meet their personal needs. Delia has obviously lost focus and is living an unbalanced life. This becomes obvious when it is difficult for her to sleep because it is so quiet. There's always noise in Portland. Those of us who live in urban areas can relate. Even though Delia is willing to add Lucas to her "men just for sex" list, Lucas isn't really willing to become relegated to that category. It doesn't take too long before both of these people find that their hearts have become entangled. Delia really has to struggle with with the choices she faces--can she really return to a life that has become sterile in so many ways when she has found a profound peace she had forgotten existed and a man who cares about her as a woman and not as a professional?
I found this novella to be extremely compelling in its subject matter, in the reality and humanity of its characters, and the realistic context. The story moved along in a way that kept my mind engaged. As it is not a full length novel I was able to read it in one sitting and thus I think I was more aware of the flow of the story. I thought it was so very well-written. This is my first encounter with this particular author but she has demonstrated a lively imagination, good writing skills, and the ability to tell a full and expanded story in a relatively small number of pages. I appreciate that a lot.
Katie, BookingIt--"Delia is easy to relate to: she’s a career woman looking for love and doing a bad job at it. Lucas reminds me of a good-looking country boy who is happy with life, even though his life is unglamorous. I liked how these two got together even though it was a bit sudden.
The relationship is the plot of this short story. The pacing moves consistently well, but I questioned some of the plot points, specifically one later in the story since Delia had not known Lucas for very long. Luckily, the ending is fantastic and makes the story worth the read. Tamed is a tidy short story. The characters are realistic and the relationship is sweet, but very fast. Although the story is not memorable, this short story is enjoyable to read and won’t disappoint." BookingIt Grade: B+
Yadkny, The Pagan & the Pen Book Reviews--"This is a quick read with very well established characters and settings. I wouldn't have minded if this story was a bit longer since the ending seemed kind of rushed, but overall it was enjoyable.Recommended reading for those looking for a quick roll in the hay with a handsome cowboy." Overall Card Rating: 3 1/2
Jenn Shanks Pray, The Romance Reviews--"Emily Cale's TAMED proves to be a sweet, sassy little romance guaranteed to make you appreciate cowboys and rethink city life...One wish for this novella would be to make it slightly longer to give more depth to Lucas and his romance with Delia. Watching a country boy woo a city girl was never more enjoyable. TAMED should guarantee even the staunchest city girl will hope for romance under the open skies of the West." 4 stars!
Beth, The Readers Roundtable--"I can really get wrapped up in a cowboy romance and Tamed was no exception. Oh, if only we could all take a break from work and enjoy a vacation filled with pleasure like Delia did…ooh la la!..Tamed is filled with far-from-tame, spontaneously combustible sex that will light your own fire…yum! A delicious read that I highly recommend!" 5 Gold Crowns and a Recommended Read!!
Tamed by Emily Cale * I received a copy of this book from Breathless Press in exchange for an honest review*
Delia is stressed out and tired of the dating scene in Portland. She has been hurt in the past so she spends all of her time working. She isn’t looking for anything permanent but lately all the guys seem to be college aged and inexperienced. Her aunt gives her the perfect out when she asks her to come to Wyoming for a visit. She doesn’t realize how much she needs the break until she gets there.
Lucas is one of the ranch hands at her aunt and uncle’s ranch. He has a reputation as a ladies’ man and she is warned to stay away from him but there is just something about him that calls to her. He makes her feel safe and cared for. He is tall and sexy; she could easily fall for him if she lets herself.
Lucas can’t believe the beauty that just arrived used to spend her summers on the ranch. She is a city girl through and through, how is she going to fit in? He is pleasantly surprised with her the more he gets to know her. He has never thought about settling down but with Delia he is starting to want those things; if he can only convince her to stay in Wyoming and give them a chance.
Delia is a competent business woman but she is not happy with her life. She is tired of the meaningless sex and loneliness that she is feeling. She is excited about the opportunity to spend some time on her aunt & uncle’s farm to unwind and relax. She never expected to meet a handsome cowboy while there. Lucas has her thinking about a future away from the city, it she can let go of her past first.
It was nice to see Delia unwind and decompress as the story progressed. She also realized that she has been using the guys that she has been dating after she saw Lucas with another girl. She wants to trust him but she has been hurt in the past that she has a hard time letting go. She is happiest when she is at her aunt and uncle’s farm but she has to decide if she is ready to walk away from her city life and friends.
Lucas is good for Delia. He is a sexy cowboy that may have a reputation as a womanizer but Delia makes him want to change. She needs someone to take care of her and let her know that she is loved; Lucas could be that person if she will let him. They both seem to fill a need in each other and they are superhot together too.
After graduating from college, Delia became focused and very career-driven on the new company she started with her friend. That left very little time to go back to the ranch she had spent many of her summers. Her aunt finally convinces her to come for a visit with the joyful news of the birth of a foal to Delia's horse Snickers. Delia begins to reminisce and soon finds it hard to reason her way out of not going, especially now that her personal life feels meaningless. A trip out to the country just might be the trick to getting her out of her own personal funk.
Lucas is probably best know on the ranch for his womanizing ways, but the hard work he puts in doesn't go unnoticed. He reasons that his reputation is in part because of the mundane routine he has in his life and although it's not a bad life, it can be a lonely one. It isn't until the day a little spitfire of a city girl decides to trip into his life on stilettos, does he actually begin to feel something other than just lust at first sight.
I found both Delia and Lucas to have very similar characteristics even though they come from two totally different worlds. They both have had plenty of meaningless sex, are stubborn, flirtatious, independent, and smart in their respective careers, but both seem to be looking for something more out of life than just a good time. It's exactly those similar characteristics that bring them to instant attraction and soon heedless of the warnings tossed their way, find that they are compatible in more ways than one. Then the day comes that reality makes a call and Delia knows she has to make a choice. Delia has always been the one to kick out men from her bed before; this confidence stemming from the lack of distrust for them that she's earned after a cheater in her past. How can she throw away all that she's worked for on the whim of finding companionship with a ranch hand? Delia's vacation turns into a hard lesson in self discovery for both of them.
This is a quick read with very well established characters and settings. I wouldn't have minded if this story was a bit longer since the ending seemed kind of rushed, but overall it was enjoyable.
Recommended reading for those looking for a quick roll in the hay with a handsome cowboy.
There is very little I enjoy more than a good cowboy romance. Now. Ask anyone who reads this blog, it hasn’t always been this way. In fact, it took some very good cowboy romances to bring me over from the dark side. Severl of them were from Breathless Press, which this one also was. Two from Harlequin (BJ Daniels sticks out in my mind). This novella, by Emily Cale, follows in the footsteps of those cowboy romances I now love.
First of all, the opening of this book is great. I know that we’ve all see the city girl goes country storyline, but I love the twist of the “older” woman bringing home younger men angle. It was well-written and hilarious. The biology class line had me laughing out loud. That has been my life before.
But the most fun part is the eventual relationship between the hero and heroine. They’ve got the humor, the chemistry, the conflict… it’s so much fun. This was a solid erotic cowboy romance. I hope that Emily Cale writes more of these. I know I’ll be there to read them.
I can really get wrapped up in a cowboy romance and Tamed was no exception. Oh, if only we could all take a break from work and enjoy a vacation filled with pleasure like Delia did…ooh la la!
Delia was tired of the same old guys who were only interested in their own selfish pleasure. What did she have to do to find someone interested in her pleasure?
When her aunt called to invite Delia back home to the farm for a visit, Delia wasn’t sure she should go. Her business partner convinced her to go, thinking Delia could have a fling with a hot cowboy to spice up her life. Well, Delia met the hot cowboy, but her business partner might not be so happy with the results.
Tamed is filled with far-from-tame, spontaneously combustible sex that will light your own fire…yum! A delicious read that I highly recommend!
Rated 5 Gold Crowns and a Recommended Read by Beth!
What happens when the city girl and the farm hand hook up? A little drama, of-course! It's always a gamble when you play where you work, in this case, it worked out for them. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of character development achieved in such a short read. It was an excellent freebie!

A novella that is erotic while dealing with the issues that many single, professional women face--loneliness, frustration at finding a meaningful love relationship, etc. This is a successful women whose business has, in many ways, cut her off from her family who live on a ranch in Big Sky Country. It is well written and the characters are crisp, real, very human, with the roiling emotions that emerge when people from two different worlds are attracted and must find a way not only through the walls around their hearts but the barriers between their cultural settings. Very good read!
The story didn't feel believable, and I didn't care for Delia and didn't love Lucas enough to make up for her. Storyline and editing issues combined to make me this just meh.
