About the author

Greek mythology or Biblical stories base dramas, such as Electra (1937), of French writer Hippolyte Jean Giraudoux, who also wrote several novels. He fathered Jean-Pierre Giraudoux.

People consider this French novelist, essayist, diplomat. and playwright among the most important French dramatists of the period between World War I and World War II. They note his work for its stylistic elegance and poetic fantasy. The relationship between man and woman or some unattainable ideal in some cases dominates themes of Giraudoux .

Léger Giraudoux, father of Jean Giraudoux, worked for the ministry of transport. Giraudoux studied at the Lycée Lakanal in Sceaux and upon graduation traveled extensively in Europe. After his return to France in 1910, he accepted a position with the ministry of foreign affairs.
With the outbreak of World War I, he served with distinction and in 1915 became the first writer ever to be awarded the wartime Legion of Honour.

He married in 1918 and in the subsequent inter-war period produced the majority of his writing. He first achieved literary success through his novels, notably Siegfried et le Limousin (1922) and Eglantine (1927). An ongoing collaboration with actor and theater director Louis Jouvet, beginning in 1928 with Jouvet's radical streamlining of Siegfried for the stage, stimulated his writing. But it is through his plays that gained him international renown. He became well known in the English-speaking world largely because of the award-winning adaptations of his plays by Christopher Fry (The Trojan War Will Not Take Place) and Maurice Valency (The Madwoman of Chaillot, Ondine, The Enchanted, The Apollo of Bellac).

Giraudoux served as a juror with Florence Meyer Blumenthal in awarding the Prix Blumenthal, a grant given between 1919 and 1954 to painters, sculptors, decorators, engravers, writers, and musicians.

He is buried in the Cimetière de Passy in Paris.

His son, Jean-Pierre Giraudoux, was also a writer.

يعني باين من اسم المسرحية أنترمتزو ده انها مش هيتفهم منها حاجة لكن برده قراءتها
عنوان المسرحية معناه اللحن موسيقي بيؤدي بين فاصلين
فالجو بقي ربط بين العقل والقلب والواقع والخيال وعالم الموتي والاحياء وحتي النبات

Giraudoux was best described by Cocteau "un très bon élève qui ajoute à cette sagesse le prestige mystérieux du cancre" :)

Intermezzo is nowhere as good as Electre, Giraudoux's theatrical masterpiece. But it's quite the powerful play. The strength of the characters and their complex simplicity, the battle of occult knowledge (Isabelle trying to talk to and understand death) and order (the inspector who wants to show everyone spirits don't exist) under the eyes of normality (the drug store owner, the controller, the little girls etc.).

And this battle ends with the victory of normality, of life as translated by the discussions and the voices that we hear and live with every day (no spoilers though!!).

The play reminded me of Faust only in reverse in that the curiosity for death is not an active pursuit but more of a wait that Isabelle has long "waited" to end. She's a big like saint Fatima from Portugal, only in dialogue with death instead of the virgin Mary!!

Il a de l’esprit assurément et je reconnais bien son féminisme d’avant garde mais c’est l’œuvre de lui que j’ai le moins aimée. La plus hermétique. Pourquoi l’amour aurait un effet si négatif ? Le futur mariage d’Isabelle avec un vieux barbon je comprendrais mais le contrôleur l’aime sincèrement semble t il. Certes aimer un « fonctionnaire » ne constitue pas une grande aventure en soi mais je ne suis pas certaine de bien saisir ce qui se serait passé si elle n’avait succombé au charme du contrôleur. Serait elle morte ?
Je vais voir ce que les critiques en disent, il y a matière à interprétation !

J’ai bien aimé mais sans plus, je n’ai pas compris certains échanges et l’intrigue ne m’a pas plus intéressé que ça, cela reste une pièce de théâtre que je pense très sympathique à jouer ou a regarder.

Excellente pièce, dotée d'un humour familier, grinçant, parfois même caché ; le sarcasme et l'ironie sont maîtres dans cette comédie particulière, particulièrement absurde et intelligente.

Intermezzo commence dans un climat de doute qui s’est abattu sur un petit village. Il semble que rien ne tourne rond, la routine est complètement bouleversée et quelques personnalités pensent que la raison de ce remue-ménage est Isabelle, une jeune femme qui a rendez-vous quotidiennement avec un spectre. Ces mêmes personnes vont donc tendre un piège à Isabelle et il va s’avérer que les choses n’étaient pas vraiment ce qu’elles semblaient être…

La pièce est principalement centrée sur les interactions possibles entre l’amour, la vie et la mort, ce qui est parfaitement dépeint dans les rendez-vous entre Isabelle et le spectre. Le lecteur comprend assez rapidement que la jeune femme est attirée par ce mort, par la mort et le village s’inquiète. Ces passages-là sont plutôt intéressants et plus on approche de la fin et des révélations du spectre, plus j’ai apprécié ma lecture. Néanmoins, j’ai trouvé de nombreuses scènes très longues et partiellement inutiles, comme tous les moments où on croise les petites filles (assez agaçantes) et principalement ceux où elles se voient questionnées par le Maire et ses amis.

Je finis donc sur une note mitigée : j’ai apprécié la trame principale, mais tout ce qui s’en éloigne m’a déplu et un peu lassée. Pas de contre-indications à ceux qui veulent en tenter la lecture, le tout début et la toute fin valent la peine, mais je n’en garderai clairement pas un souvenir impérissable.

Thème intéressant, début et fin sympa, le reste fait un peu figure de remplissage
