Tündér Lala
Az örök boldogságban élő, halhatatlan tündérek világában szokatlan dolog, ha valaki folyton elkóborol, elcseni édesanyja tündérjogarát, és unalmában emberekkel barátkozik. Tündér Lala különös viselkedése miatt sokat bánkódik édesanyja, Írisz királynő. Egy nap Gigi, a kis unikornis bejelenti, hogy Írisz frigyre lép a hűséges Amalfi kapitánnyal, ami az egész birodalmat örömmel tölti el. Born in Debrecen, Szabó graduated at the University of Debrecen as a teacher of Latin and of Hungarian. She started working as a teacher in a Calvinist all-girl school in Debrecen and Hódmezővásárhely. Between 1945 and 1949 she was working in the Ministry of Religion and Education. She married the writer and translator Tibor Szobotka in 1947.
She began her writing career as a poet, publishing her first book Bárány ("Lamb") in 1947, which was followed by Vissza az emberig ("Back to the Human") in 1949. In 1949 she was awarded the Baumgarten Prize, which was--for political reasons--withdrawn from her on the very day it was given. She was dismissed from the Ministry in the same year.
During the establishment of Stalinist rule from 1949 to 1956, the government did not allow her works to be published. Since her unemployed husband was also stigmatized by the communist regime, she was forced to teach in an elementary school during this period.
Her first novel, Freskó ("Fresco"), written in these years was published in 1958 and achieved overwhelming success among readers. Her most widely read novel, Abigél ("Abigail", 1970), is an adventure story about a schoolgirl boarding in eastern Hungary during the war.
She received several prizes in Hungary, and her works have been published in 42 countries. In 2003, she was the winner of the French literary prize Prix Femina Étranger for the best foreign novel.
Her novel Abigél was popularized through a much-loved television series in 1978. Abigél was also chosen as the sixth most popular novel at the Hungarian version of Big Read. Her three other novels that were in the top 100 are Für Elise , An Old-Fashioned Story , and The Door .

Lots of things apparently, but trouble and heart-ache are inevitable.

THIS BOOK IS MAGIC!! One of those rare children's stories that haven't lost the fascination it holds over me even though I first read it more than 30 years ago.
I still remember the experience like it had happened yesterday. I just turned 8 and it was a present from my head teacher for "excelling" in class (the first and last time, I think :) .
I found the cover as childish as only a mature, almost-8-year-old can, but then during the vacation at my granny's, with nothing new to read, I opened it reluctantly.
And WHOOOSH, the magic leaped from page 1 and hit me on the head. I read it through in one sitting, in a total daze: feared the Evil sorcerer Aterpater with a fear not even Darth Vader could surpass (and I watched the first STAR WARS in the same year) and cried my eyes out when GiGi, the little truth-teller unicorn was chased away from Fairyland, admitting to a crime she did not commit to save her friend, Lala from a terrible fate. I bawled when the Fairy Queen Iris decided to marry Aterpater so that Lala could be safe.
And I cheered when Aterpater was defeated in a most satisfying, though rather surprising manner by the Fairy Apothecary. (Lesson learned: ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR APOTHECARY WHEN IN DOUBT!!!!)
Needless to say, I re-read it countless times and then went on reading books by Magda Szabó. Yes, we are talking about the author of The Door, Katalin Street, The Fawn, Abigail and other amazing novels.
Still, I haven't read it for at least 2 decades, when suddenly it called to me from my bookshelf. And I thought, why not. Let's see if the "Old Book" still hast IT.
The Answer is: YES, a thousand times YES! The cover may be old, but the content is still as fresh as ever. Here I was reading away like mad the whole morning, laughing, smiling, crying, bawling and bawling some more.

Lolò il principe delle fate è una favola ungherese scritta nel dopoguerra, eppure è una di quelle storie capaci di parlare ai lettori di tutte le epoche. Una di quelle storie indimenticabili, piene di magia, sogni e amore.
Lolò è il figlio della regina delle fate, Iris. Al contrario di tutte le fate però, Lolò è curioso, vuole esplorare il mondo e sopporta poco le regole. Un’anima ribelle, insomma. La regina Iris è disperata, e quando Lolò va ad esplorare il mondo degli umani innesca una catena di eventi che potrebbero distruggere il regno.
Tra unicorni, pozioni magiche, maledizioni, ali rubate e sotterfugi, Lolò è una piccola chicca sconosciuta, ma che piacerebbe tantissimo ai fan di Harry Potter. O a chi, semplicemente, adora le storie intrise di magia e avventura.
Insomma, dovete leggerlo perché devo parlarne con qualcuno.

Izcila. Sarakstīta manā dzimšanas gadā, bet ideja un izpildījums, lai gan mazliet bērnišķīgs, gozētos topu pirmajās vietās, būtu tas izdots angliski un nesen.

This children's book is a classic, an exciting, beautiful, quick-paced, heartfelt and clever story about the fairy queen's son, 10-year-old Lala, how he finds himself different from the others, how he's coping with those amidst dangers from the evil wizard-fairy, his companionship with humans. Are humans and fairies so much different?
I read it to my sons aged 6-7, and while it may have been a touch early, they were captivated by the sheer adventure. I would recommend it from age 9-10.
Language-wise: the Hungarian original is the perfect example of an exquisite text, not very simple or basic, very enjoyable reading it as an adult, one of my favourites.

I read this book in Hungarian when I was a kid. Now I'm reading the English translation (I'd like to read it in the original again, but I don't own it in Hungarian)). It's a beautiful fairy tale (literally, because it's about fairies) about the son of the fairy queen who has a human heart. The English translation is not bad and the title is "The Gift of the Wondrous Fig Tree". I can't wait to read it to my daughter when she gets a little bit older! ;-)

Szerintem életemben nem olvastam még ennyire bájos könyvet ♥️
Annak ellenére, hogy mennyire szeretem Szabó Magdát és történeteit, szégyenszemre elég sok kimaradt, köztük a Tündér Lala is. De örülök is, hogy csak felnőtt fejjel olvastam, hisz így talán még jobban is tudtam értékelni mind a karaktereket, mind pedig a mondanivalót.
Ha élhetek ezzel a szójátékkal, egyenesen tündéri volt ez a történet!

Absolutely delightful fairy-human tale. Magda Szabo has a uniquely quirky sensibility, and never patronizes or talks down to kids who are reading her story (or, in the case of my kids, listening to it). The story is compelling, the illustrations are beautiful, and there are many moments of sophisticated, knowing, off-beat humor — it’s a very wonderfully delightful package.

A lovely fairy tale about the son of the Queen of the Fairyland who has a human heart. Katalin Szegedi's gorgeous illustrations are a wonderful added bonus. I wasn't sure whether to give this four or five stars, but the illustrations raise it up to five... as does the adorable ending!

Una tenera storia d'avventura nel mondo delle fate, perfetta da leggere a tutte le età.
E ancor di più, perfetta se volete avvicinare un bambino al mondo di Harry Potter ma pensate sia ancora presto... questo non c'entra con le storie del maghetto, ma può essere una buona pre-lettura.

This is surely one of the most exquisite tales I've read in a long while. It is a beautiful and magical tale of sacrificial love and courage set in fairyland. Would love to see this made into a film!

“Lolò, il Principe della Fate”, non è una semplice fiaba da leggere ai bambini prima di andare a letto. Il mondo magico delle fate che questo libro racconta e che affascina i piccolini è in realtà un’allegoria: la società umana che spaventa gli adulti.

Lolò, figlio della regina delle fate Iris, è un fatino molto curioso e intelligente. Alle giornate monotone e spensierate del mondo fatato, preferisce volare lontano e conoscere mondi nuovi.
Iris, è molto preoccupata per il suo comportamento irrequieto. La dolce fata crede che il motivo di tale atteggiamento sia la mancanza di un padre; Lolò, infatti, le è stato donato da un albero magico.
Il vecchio mago Aterpater rivela alla regina che non è questa la causa, ma dietro al comportamento irregolare del piccolino, si cela una verità che l’universo delle fate non accetterebbe mai. Iris è disperata. Il figlioletto rischia una vita da “scaldone”, e lei non deve assolutamente permetterlo.
Inizia così una bellissima favola che ha come protagonista un piccolo fatino di dieci anni.
[…] Mamma, ho chiesto una cosa-disse Lolò.- Prima esaudiscila, poi vado in camera mia e poi venite a punirmi.
Il principino sa benissimo come ottenere ciò che desidera ed è consapevole dei divieti imposti nel regno delle fate, i quali limitano la libertà di pensiero ma anche la gioia di vivere e Lolò non vuole in alcun modo rinunciare a questa gioia. Per le fate il piccolo è un bambino viziato e disobbediente. In realtà, dietro questa inquietudine si nasconde la voglia di essere sé stesso. Il principino mette in dubbio un contesto che, per quanto possa sembrare armonioso e ideale, è coercitivo ed esige la sottomissione al potere attraverso la prevaricazione.
Magda Szabò, scrittrice ungherese di grande successo, nella sua carriera poliedrica, contempla anche un genere letterario poco dibattuto, quello delle fiabe. La fiaba, non viene quasi mai affrontata e analizzata, poiché considerata un semplice racconto per bambini. Leggendo “Lolò, il Principe della Fiabe”, viene spontaneo approfondire la storia, perché sin da subito, il lettore immagina i protagonisti come esseri umani e non come creature magiche. Appare evidente fin dall’inizio, infatti, che l’autrice vuole comunicare ai suoi lettori che la fiaba di Lolò, scritta in un periodo di oppressioni e divieti, è una metafora della realtà, e che tutta la serie di immagini e simboli magici vanno decodificati.
“Lolò, il Principe delle Fate” è diventato un classico della letteratura ungherese, e letto e analizzato nelle scuole, che in Italia è arrivato soltanto nel 2005, con questa bellissima edizione illustrata da Donatella Espositi.
Consiglio questa lettura ai bambini perché capiscano quanto è importante essere sé stessi e perseguire con determinazione i propri sogni. Lo consiglio anche a tutti gli adulti, per i valori che questo libro contiene, come il rispetto e la libertà.

Felnőtt fejjel jutottam az elolvasásáig, léleksimogató olvasmány, amiben a mesevilág nem emberi szereplői tökéletesen jelenítik meg a nagyon is emberi tulajdonságokat. Tizenpárévesen, Harry Potter mellé tökéletes olvasmány lehet, bátorságot és további fontos értékeket lehet meríteni belőle.

Questa fiaba, nonostante i tanti scleri che mi ha provocato, è dolce e tenera: riporta un po' di magia nel cuore di ognuno di noi, e a volte anche qualche risata. L'antagonista è decisamente inquietante e anche realistico negli atteggiamenti (beh, tranne quando la sua risata si trasforma in serpente, si intende).
Come spesso avviene nelle fiabe, le soluzioni sono un po' dei deus ex machina: aspetto che personalmente non mi piace ma che è perfettamente normale che ci sia. E questa è l'unica nota "negativa", oltre alla semi-tontaggine (?) dei personaggi, fonte dei miei scleri.
Ah, che strano rapporto quello con la letteratura per l'infanzia e per i ragazzi: sanno parlare con semplicità anche delle questioni più profonde, ma ogni tanto questa semplicità è proprio l'ostacolo maggiore per noi adulti che vogliamo rimanere piccoli nel cuore.

Hogy kiknek ajánlom? MINDENKINEK! És ezt most tényleg viccen kívül. Ez a könyv az (gondolkodtam általánosítok az összes Szabó Magda könyvre nézve, de inkább nem) amit mindenki olvashat. Legyen akár kisgyerek, akinek még felolvassák a szülei, nagy felnőtt, aki már maga olvassa, vagy éppen nagymama akinek már az unokája mutatja be tündérországot. Teljesen mindegy, hogy kilenc vagy kilencvenkilenc éves vagy, ezt a könyvet végig kell járnod, ha igazán szereted az irodalmat, nem maradhat ki. És még jobb, ha van belőle egy saját példányod, hogy amikor csak tetszik levedd a polcról, hogy ismét belecsöppenhess egy tündéri világba.

Elmondhatatlanul aranyos kis történet! :) Az eleje picit vontatott ugyan, de aztán magával ragadja az olvasót. Alig bírtam kivárni míg újra olvashatok egy picit, pedig ez rég esett meg velem… meg drukkoltam, hogy történjen már valami szép, legyen jó a mese vége!

Az egyik kedvenc gyerekkori mesém, még édesanyámtól hallottam, mennyire szép, és aztán sokszor újra meg újra elolvastam, csodálatosan emberi tündérmese, szívszorító de felemelő, felnőtt fejjel már látom milyen finoman, érzékenyen láthatjuk kit mi motivál, mi van a szereplők lelkében. Csodálatosan tiszta történet.

This book is a true jewel. Made my youth richer and definitelly added something to my life. I wish i could buy one in dutch so that my children could read it too. Such a shame the world never got a fair chance to read this book.

Ha lehetne, hat csillagot adnék. A legszebb mese, amit az elmúlt 20 évben olvastam. Talán az utolsó harmadban lehetett volna több intrika, de felnőttként is nehéz volt letenni, pedig rég kinőttem a műfajt.

Een sprookjesachtig verhaal over een jonge elfenprins en zijn moed en doorzettingsvermogen. Prachtig taalgebruik en met veel liefde geschreven.
