This lively, practical text presents a fresh and comprehensive approach to doing qualitative research. The book offers a unique balance of theory and clear-cut choices for customizing every phase of a qualitative study. A scholarly mix of classic and contemporary studies from multiple disciplines provides compelling, field-based examples of the full range of qualitative approaches. Readers learn about adaptive ways of designing studies, collecting data, analyzing data, and reporting findings. Key aspects of the researcher's craft are addressed, such as fieldwork options, the five phases of data analysis (with and without using computer-based software), and how to incorporate the researcher's ";declarative"; and ";reflective"; selves into a final report. Ideal for graduate-level courses, the text Discussions of ethnography, grounded theory, phenomenology, feminist research, and other approaches.* Instruc
Informative and easy-to-read; finished it in a few hours. It provides a clear and comprehensive overview of qual research. Well, it is comprehensive in an overview way--fantastic for an understanding of what goes into qualitative research and what to expect. The vignettes were not worth much to me but they might prove useful to others. The author's case study book provides in depth info on my design so I'm good to go!
This is definitely a well-researched book on qualitative research. But I did struggle in finishing it due to personal reasons like getting irritated early due to the author’s positionally that implies qualitative research is deficient compared to quantitative one in the first chapter and how some of the vignettes placement is a bit distracting. I might reread it when I am in the mood and in need to do so sometime in the future.
Great overview and refresher on the qualitative research process. The book was well organized and the writing was informative without being distractedly academic.
Lots of useful, though a bit outdated, information, but since it’s so information-heavy it’s a tough read to get through. At least the language is easy to follow.
