Kalidasa

Rate this book
Kalidas owes his fame to his Sanskrit play Abhijnana-Shakuntala (Shakuntala Recognized by the Token Ring), the long epic poem Kumara-Sambhava (Birth of Kumara) and the lyric poem Meghaduta (Cloud Messenger). Kalidasa, who lived some time in the middle of the 4th and early 5th centuries A.D., has left no account of his life. According to popular legend, he owed his ingenuity as much to Goddess Kali's blessings as to his own talents.

The story of Kalidasa warns us that we should never make superficial judgements when looking at the character of individuals. From humble birth to scholar and poet, Kalidasa always tried to use his talents in a way that would positively impact those around him. A tale with much to reflect on, even now, in our modern world.

A rediscovery

A nostalgic read. I have read this when I was 11 or 12 years old . 38 years before. Amar Chitra Katha is a link to our past. Jai Hind

Do you know Kalidasa got his name because he loved worshipping Maa Kali? He was an uneducated cowherd who became the most famous playwright, thanks to his wife's words. But he was also cursed by the very same wife, and his death came to him in the form of a woman. Kalidasa was a master poet and playwright who became the bosom friend of maharaja Bhoja. His life story is nothing but fascinating.

I loved this book. The story of Kalidasa, his intelligence, his devotion to goddess Kali, how he considered his wife as his guru and then could not be her husband anymore, his relationship with Raja Bhoja, and his demise - all these details are covered very well in this story.
