Kalle Blomkvist #1

Mesterdetektiven Blomkvist

Rate this book

-English below-

ENGLISH
Astrid Lindgren is not just a writer. No matter how old her books are, they awaken your adventurous children's soul. Whether you are 7 or 77. Astrid Lindgren flawlessly knows what interests children.

And that is certainly true of Superdetective Blomkvist: an exciting story about three children who go on an adventure in their village, they fish, they climb trees, they fight with a rival gang (which actually consists of their friends, but well, you have to keep it interesting). And during the story they also encounter a real jewelery robbers. The story breathes the atmosphere of a sunny countryside, long and lazy summer days and long summer evenings. Adventure is around every corner. Or at least the promise of adventure. The book breathes freedom. It was a time when there was hardly any supervision on children. They experienced their adventures without their parents looking over their shoulders. Something we can hardly imagine today.

My children really enjoyed this story. And so did I. I thought they might find it boring, because everything is a bit slower than a more modern story. But that was absolutely not the case. In fact, they are now reenacting the cheerful gang war of Kalle Blomkvist and his friends. Notes with hilarious insults are everywhere in the house. And so, we started the second book about Kalle Blomkvist.

To be honest (and in retrospect also kind of unfortunately), I actively shied away from Astrid Lindgren's three Kalle Blomkvist novels when my grandparents presented the German translations (and where Kalle Blomkvist is called Kalle Blomquist) to me in 1978 as a gift. For even as a young reader I was not really into mysteries, and I therefore kind of assumed that Astrid Lindgren's Kalle Blomkvist would be too much like a Nancy Drew or an Encyclopedia Brown type of character (and thus rather textually annoying to and for me).

But yes, and after now having read the 2017 Susan Beard Oxford University Press translation of Mästerdetektiven Blomkvist (Astrid Lindgren's original 1946 Swedish text), after having both read and indeed and truly also quite enjoyed Master Detective: A Kalle Blomkvist Mystery, I definitely admit that I certainly made a bit of a mistake not considering the Kalle Blomkvist novels (in German translation) as an eleven year old. For while the mystery that Kalle and his friends solve in Master Detective: A Kalle Blomkvist Mystery is still a bit too much detective story oriented for me and that the villains and in particular Cousin Einar are rather too one-sided and as such somewhat annoying and even kind of creepy, I do very much and happily appreciate that unlike the above mentioned Nancy Drew and Encyclopedia Brown novels I read and totally did not like as a young reader, NOT EVERYTHING in Master Detective: A Kalle Blomkvist Mystery actually and automatically revolves around solving mysteries, and that much of Astrid Lindgren's text (and by extension also Susan Beard's translation) is thus a story of late 1940s Swedish childhood in a small town, is a story of friendship, fun and engaging escapades (including Kalle, Eva-Lotta and Anders playing harmless tricks on people, creating a circus performance for their neighbourhood and with two rival "gangs" of children engaging in extensive but actually rather good natured and friendly skirmishes), with the mystery of the jewel theft and Kalle Blomkvist and his two friends solving this and thereby also exposing Cousin Einar as a scoundrel being decently important but also not totally and utterly front and centre either.

And in fact, for me, with Master Detective: A Kalle Blomkvist Mystery, the close and easy, the natural friendship between Kalle, Anders and Eva-Lotta is what I consider truly first and foremost (and that this also nicely overshadows the mystery is indeed really delightful), with me absolutely adoring how Astrid Lindgren is showing three young teenagers who are very close friends, and that even with both Kalle and Anders obviously having a bit of a crush on Eva-Lotta, this does not ever interfere with Kalle, Anders and Eva-Lotta mostly being a wonderfully matched group of three (who have fun together, play pranks together and yes in Master Detective: A Kalle Blomkvist Mystery also play amateur detective and solve mysteries together). Highly recommended and a totally fun and engaging read, but yes, although I personally do majorly adore how in Master Detective: A Kalle Blomkvist Mystery Susan Beard uses all these typically and wonderful British expressions in her translation, I guess I should also leave a bit of a caveat regarding this (but that at the same time I equally do not really recommend the earlier 1950s Kalle Blomkvist English language translations by Herbert Antoine either, as his narrative flow is much less natural than Susan Beard's and that I also do not at all understand why in Antoine's renditions Kalle Blomkvist's name has been changed to Bill Bergson).

This is my very favourite book of all time. It's not the most well-known book by Astrid Lindgren, but it has all the essential qualities of her fiction - the idyllic surroundings and descriptions of a happy childhood. I think I was about 9 when I first read it and I've read it about once a year ever since. It's about a teenage boy who in the English version is apparently called Bill Bergson (sorry, I haven't read it in English), but whose name in the original is Kalle Blomkvist. He is very interested in detective work and he solves three mysteries in the three books Lindgren wrote about him (the others are called Bill Bergson Lives Dangerously and Bill Bergson and the White Rose Rescue). He lives in a sleepy small Swedish town of about 1940s, built on a river, with its castle ruins on the hill top, beautiful doll houses, striped cats sitting on the pavement, chestnuts in bloom, families having Sunday dinners in their small green gardens, open windows and flying white curtains in the breeze, the sweet smell of the freshly-baked pastries etc etc So, imagine an idyllic small town and you have it all. In addition, since everything happens during the summer holidays, it's always summer there. Kalle has two friends, Eva-Lotta and Anders, with whom he spends his summer, playing a game called The War of the Roses, and who also help him solve the crimes, even though they aren't too enthusiastic about Kalle's keen interest at first. There are some darker moments when the crimes take place, but naturally all books have a happy ending :)

Teenager Kalle Blomkvist (Bill Bergson in English) spends the summer days playing with his friends Eva-Lotta and Anders, and once in a while they team up to fight the rival “gang” over real or invented disagreements. But in his daydreams Kalle has an alter ego - Master Detective Blomkvist.

Nothing much happens in the small Swedish town where he lives, and, whenever something does happen, the only suspect is the local drunk. No case is too big, or too small, for Master Detective Blomkvist, who puts his investigative powers and intellect to use in search for clues and suspicious events or persons.

When uncle Einar, a distant relative of Eva-Lotta shows up, Kalle eyes a possibility to get his breakthrough. If only uncle Einar could do something suspicious...

The story about Kalle is about the inventiveness and imagination that emerges from good old boredom. It brings back childhood memories of make-believe, hide-and-seek, spying and what-to-do-with-all-this-spare-time. Boy, do I miss it!

I read this to my kids, and they were as captivated by it as I was (as a kid and still today). Combine stories like this with some basic offline time, and you’ve (read: I’ve) got yourself (myself) a massive stress reducer. It takes me back to nature, back to playfulness, back to joy and happiness. Peace of mind for a 150-ish page read? That - I’d say - is a bargain!

I read this on a whim to see what Kalle Blomkvist was like as a master detective. Astrid Lindgren wrote Pippi Longstocking amongst other stories so were looking at Blomkvist as a detective. We were all 13 at some point in our lives. Wonder if Mikael Blomkvist by Stieg Larsson is a takeoff on Kalle Blomkvist so many years latter. Well, read this to your grandchildren because Kalle get his man or men as you see it.

Knyga jaunesniems paaugliams - vyresniems pradinukams, o jaunesniems gali skaityti tėvai.

How do you do, fellow kids"

Labai smagi scena link pabaigos:
Kalis grįžta namo labai susivėlinęs.
- Tėti, man būtinai reikia į policiją!

I made an effort to read this (had to Inter-Library Loan it) because Stieg Larsson's books include references to it. Specifically, to the main character, which in the Swedish books is Kalle Blomquist, but in the English translations is Bill Bergson.

This is the first of three or so books in the series, and it's a pretty good little kids detective story. Kids solve the case of a jewel heist while playing in their small town. A quaint 50's feel, and some charming quirks in the translation.

this book was originally in Swedish but we read it in our German Children’s Literature class because apparently a lot of German kids read it and, according to my professor, “when you’re at a party later in life and you want to impress Germans you can be like [takes a drag of cigarette] ‘oh, natürlich habe ich Astrid Lindgren gelesen’”

Viena no Astridas Lindgrēnes bērnu grāmatām.

Uusi suomennos antoi minulle kimmokkeen tarttua tähän Lindgrenin lastendekkaritrilogian avausosaan.

As a mystery lover, I was immediately interested in the story of this intrepid child detective. This book was given to me by my mum on the recommendation of her Swedish friend. Apparently these were her favourite books growing up and have now been published in English. I loved Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking stories as a child and lovers of Pippi will be glad to encounter more capers with another Lindgren's lively creations!

I finally reread this book as an adult. It's been way too long. I had a stupid grin on my face the whole time I listened to the audiobook. What an absolute delight.

This wasn't just a favourite book when I was young. I wanted to BE Kalle. I thought that since he solved a crime, it would be just as likely that something similar could happen to me. Alas, the police of my little town never did require the criminological services of an 8 year old. 😅
