¡Él me quiere a mí! (Y siempre me querrá)".
Anthony Browne, a Hans Christian Andersen Medalist, is the author-illustrator of many acclaimed books for children, including Silly Billy and Little Beauty. He lives in Kent, England.
After reading My Mum I wondered if there was a Dad equivalent, and there is. I was dissapointed that this book followed the stereotypes of dads being fearless, strong etc. and didn't take the opportunity to say his dad was good at cooking or any of the other stereotypical things he blessed his mum book with. I think it's great that the mum was good at cooking but so should the dad be, or at least have a go at it.
This sweet picture-book tribute to fathers is narrated by a young child who describes his own dad, and all of his many amazing qualities. "He's all right, my dad," the text begins, going on to list this one father's many feats - he can jump over the moon, and wrestle giants - and other appealing characteristics. The story concludes with a declaration of love for dad, on the narrator's part, and a corresponding statement that his dad loves him...
Originally published in the UK in 2000, and here in the USA shortly thereafter, My Dad is celebrated British author/artist Anthony Browne's answer to the classic reassurance tale. The narrator's dad, and by extension, all fathers, appear here as strong and protective figures in the young child's life, always ready to participate in any fun, and always ready to step in should anything - like the Big, Bad Wolf! - threaten. The artwork, done in watercolor I believe, is quite appealing, with many humorous scenes depicting the father as various animals and other figures. All in all, a heartwarming book, one I would recommend to anyone looking for children's stories about fathers, or reassurance tales in general.
This book is about a boy who talks about how wonderful his father is, and about all the wonderful things he can do. His father is not afraid of the Big Bad Wolf, he can jump over the moon and he can wrestle with giants. The illustrations include characters from other folk and fairy tales. For example, when the boy mentioned that his father is not afraid of the Big Bad Wolf; Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs were hiding behind a tree. The illustrations also enable younger children to read the book without the words as they can see what the boy is saying. For example, ‘my dad can swim like a fish’ is illustrated with a picture of his father with a fish’s head, swimming.
A nice story about a boy and his dad. Lots of metaphors and similes, could be used to teach about these devices and inspire children to create their own about a friend or family member. Lots of repetition makes the story fell connected and would be enjoyed by young children. I’d use the book with FS and KS1 children.
This book is really lovely and shows the great relationship between a father and son. It really does show just how children look up to the adults around them. This book has so much hidden meaning and would be great for discussion with the children.
A child's list of all the reasons he thinks his dad is great! (his dad is also evidently a big fan of wearing Pjs all day too and I personally think this should be added to the list!)
A child lists all the ways that his dad is great. Similes are emphasized by putting the object in the same patterned robe as dad wears, creating a funny juxtaposition (he eats like a horse...horse at table in bathrobe...) Love the ending!
I'm a dad!! To the greatest most beautiful amazing smartest girl in the whole wide universe, of course I'm bias but I do have this condition where my mouth doesn't tell a lie to her because I'm her dad and I couldn't be happier!!
I really liked reading this story by Anthony Browne. It is a picture book in which a boy describes how amazing his dad is to him. He talks about how his dad's capabilities are beyond what one could even imagine. I loved how the illustrations clearly matched the descriptions of his dad. This book could be used during a Father's Day activity so that kids can show appreciation for their father's or father figures. It could also be used to teach students metaphors and similes. I also liked how throughout the story, their were references made to different fairytales, and this could allow students to make text to text connections. Overall, I think this was a nice book for early readers because it was easy to understand, the illustrations matched the words, and it is one that many children could relate to. 5/5 stars!
From the 2000 Hans Christian Andersen Medalist In an endearing homage to dads everywhere, a boy describes, and exaggerates, the many accomplishments and feats of his father. Among the traits praised are his enormous talent for singing, his near-professional wrestling skills, his extreme bravery in the face of danger (he's not even afraid of the Big Bad Wolf!), and his ability to quite literally, in Anthony Browne's world eat like a horse. The illustrations add a comfy layer to a book whose ultimate message is "I love my dad. And you know what? HE LOVES ME! (And he always will.)".
Notes Anthony Browne is a two-time winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal. His many children's books include Gorilla and Willy the Champ . He lives in Kent, England.
Great for use within EYFS, for topic work (all about me) or could be used around Father’s Day. References are made to other nursery rhymes ( dad is not afraid of the big bad wolf, the three little pigs and little red riding hood are hiding behind a tree in the illustrations as well as dad being able to jump over the moon, the illustrations show a dish and a spoon, makes reference to hey diddle diddle nursery rhyme). Teachers however should be aware that not all children will be in contact with a dad or have a father figure, so although this book does have potential teachers need to know the children in the class really well to ensure this book doesn’t cause upset among children in the class.
A tale about Willy and him believing he is being followed by a cloud. I picked up straight away that I think the cloud signifies depression, mental illness, anxiety. Willy cannot escape it and it is bringing him down, he is constantly seeing everyone else around him having fun. I think this would be a great book to discuss with children about how Willy may be feeling and why he is feeling like this. I think that the rain signifies a weight being lifted off Willy’s shoulder and finally feeling better, a discussion about what has happened to make him feel like this would be good.
My dad is a very cute picturebook that discusses how awesome dads are. It discusses his personality and all the different things this dad does that makes him awesome. This is a great book to read when preparing to make something for fathers day. The kids were able to easily connect to the story and loved talking about their dads afterwards. We then made a list, just like the author, of all the ways our dads are awesome. I recently learned there was a similar version by the same author title My Mom. Definitely worth the read.
My Dad by Author and Illustrator Anthony Browne is a wonderful book in celebration of all fathers. It is written from a child's perspective, as he describes all the great and amazing things that his dad could do. Anthony Browne presented "Dad" in creative illustrations and references were made to classic stories (the big bad wolf, three little pigs, and little red riding hood) and nursery rhymes (Hey! Diddle Diddle) that allows my students to make text to text connections. I will integrate this book for our theme on family.
Great book that shows the influence a good loving father can have on a child and how children look up to and adore their parents. Well illustrated and entertaining i really like this book.
This book is relatable to a lot of children but not all children so be knowledgeable of the children's backgrounds and situations before sharing this book with them as some may find it upsetting if they don't have a father figure.
A heart-warming book about a child's love for their dad, and a dad's love for their child. From a child's perspective, this book tells of all the amazing things about 'My Dad', with humorous illustrations and interesting metaphors e.g. 'My Dad can eat like a horse' and 'He's as wise as an owl'. A wonderful tribute to dads, encouraging appreciation from children & hopefully more father-read bed time stories!
The pajamas and robe he wears on every page (even when he's a FISH) made me laugh. As did the plaid toast! But the story itself was...lacking...something. It wasn't ever made clear that the dad doesn't actually do all those things, and perhaps that's what bothered me. Poor dads. They have a lot to live up to if their kids really see them this way!
This book has intertextual links to many nursery rhymes, such as hey diddle diddle, little red riding hood. I really like how Anthony Browne consistently uses the dad's dressing gown print within every page to show the reader how the dad is like the horse, owl and teddy etc. I always enjoy reading Anthony Browne's books!
The illustrations make this book. The story is simple and it is nice to have a story about how great dads are. But the illustrations are what my kids keep going to the book for. Personally I would give this 3 stars, but because of my kids constant gravitation to this book I give it 4.
A lovely read featuring intertextual links with nursery rhymes, such a Hey Diddle Diddle and Little Red Riding Hood and some very well-known expressions/similes. As always, I love Browne’s illustrations!
This book has been read to both of my kids every night for 5 years. They just adore it - and their dad. We keep finding more treats in the illustrations as well as time goes by. A must buy for all dads
A descriptive and somewhat embellished tale by a small boy who explains all the things his father can do. Humorous and touching look of how children may see the first hero known as dad in their lives.
