A Subtle Scar

Rate this book
Chandler’s life is well-ordered and running like clockwork. He’s liked and respected at his job with the Federal Investigative Service where he is a consulting mage, and he likes the work: solving crimes. The darkness in his own past doesn’t bother him, not while he gets to help other people.

Then, one day, Chandler is forced to take vacation time in order to attend a friend’s birthday party. There he meets two immortals, two gods, who seem to think he is the hottest thing since the discovery of fire.

And while Chandler would be fine with a little fun on his terms, that doesn’t seem to be what the gods had in mind.

Hermes and Charon, intimately close frenemies with benefits, have solved the problem of the delectable human they both want: share him. Because sharing is better than losing your favorite frenemy to monogamy. Also, handsome Chandler is high maintenance for a human and demands their full support for his crime solving passion.

Will Chandler find a way to get rid of the divine duo pursuing him or will his past hurts catch up with him? Will Hermes and Charon manage to satisfy their demanding boyfriend while they help him solve his case? And will the three of them understand that sharing has to be caring, even if you don’t fully understand the other?

Content Warning: This MMM romance contains sexual content only suitable for mature audiences. Themes of past trauma and grief are present.

Set in the same universe as The Devil's Necromancer, I'd suggest reading the trilogy, if not the spin off books, before reading A Subtle Scar because there is much of the worldbuilding missing from there. It's assumed you know about the magical set up etc.
A slow, slow burn as Chandler is prickly and defensive throughout, a man with many secrets and a tragic past.
Loved Charon, absolutely my favourite of the 3. He gives wisdom to the group through his observations of humanity.
This will be another series so it is largely setting up the relationship and setting the scene for upcoming books

Alexa Piper yet again delivers a fun and sweet paranormal romance that doesn't disappoint.

Oh, those immortals, they continue to make me laugh out loud.

It's so fun to see Hermes and Charon both go after Chandler and repeatedly calling Lucifer for advice on how to get 'their' human.
Chandler is a hard nut to crack. He has built many walls around himself and doesn't easily let anybody near. That may be why he needs two alpha gods to pursue him. My heart hurt for Chandler and his pain. I'm so happy Hermes and Charon worked together to take care of Chandler.

This isn't the last book about their story and I can't wait to see how their love develops and what the answers are to questions left unanswered.

Like the Hellbound books, this story follows a work-related case, with which the immortals help. Near the end of the book, the case gets a little violent, so please beware of that if you're sensitive to it.
And don't worry, this story is not too similar to the Hellbound books.

A slow burn, hurt/comfort story.
Alternating POV's from all three characters.
Cameo's from the Hellbound series. However, this book can be read as a stand-alone.

I definitely recommend if you liked the Hellbound series or any of the author's recent works.

There are a lot of reasons one might finish a book. Not read - finish. A great book has, in fact, several reasons that make you want to continue and enjoy the book. Sometimes... sometimes all you need is one. Because without that one you'd already slapped that thing down with no remorse.

The one thing that kept me going here? Chandler. Vincent? Whatever is the name of the mage that came to an important party (was persuaded to attend) and kind of... aced the whole thing? You normally don't "ace" parties but if I had a mental checklist of how someone can impress me with how they handled a party (one of my least favourite scenes in any book) - he did it.

(By the time I realized his Alure and Charm and Cool-Factor was going to be the main sacrifice of the romance plot, I would probably did that quitting thing but as it was, I was in too deep when I realized this.) Which brings me to the real issue of what seems to be, actually, a problem of the author's writing in general, as far as I can tell.

To put it politely, she writes non-con and either doesn't care or doesn't want to label it like this or... honestly, who knows.

I have a fairly positive experience with her series Guardian and Conduit but I definitely had a problem with... well, the problem now seems more obvious but at the time, it was simply my dislike for people's reaction to the MC's reluctance. It felt maddening at times. And this book takes this even further! Let's be more specific.

Let me paint a picture. You're in a restaurant. Sitting there, maybe having lunch, thinking about what you need to get done at work. There's a guy. The guy sees you. He smiles. He comes over. He wants to buy you a drink. Yes, in a restaurant. You say no, thanks. He says you're pretty. You tell him you're not interested. He propositions you. You say no. Clearly. The guy says something that is in no way a reaction to what you just said. He continues to ignore your wishes, having practically a separate conversation. He wants sex. You don't want it with him. Now, imagine if someone saw this situation and said, darn, that is love at first sight if I ever saw one. Let me give this guy a happy ending (pun intended) since this person (IRL it's usually a woman) since sane people stay away from him.

Well, welcome to this book. And other books by Piper. I only caught some glimpses of Lucifer with the necromancer and I felt like that was even worse than this and the reviews confirmed this.

I think the moment it really sunk in was when he tried to use his magic to resist and... couldn't. So many situations are based on the fact the person is vulnerable or unable to fight back. Yes, anyone can be... overpowered in the right circumstances but part of what draws me to mm is the perceived power balance and when realized he was, in the practical sense, helpless, that his skills won't protect him... darn, I felt scared for him even knowing where this was going.

I just don't get this. How is this sexy?

You're right (the characters were "right") about common romance tropes. Okay, there are kidnappings, violence done to people the MC cares about, there may be some animosity even or other things you should not accept in a real relationship. This is worse.

Someone actively pursuing someone else in a sexual manner after they expressly stated they are against said attention? That just crosses a line I didn't really know I'd drawn. Manipulating said person until they actually change their mind is not supposed to be romance. That's romanticising stalkers.

Like, it's not, unfortunately, a rare element but this particular version just seems outright wrong even if the others, I just shrug it off as fiction or I even like it. Shifters-"mate!" trope is an example of being forced but it's two way and they have to find a way to like each other. Aforementioned kidnapping? The love interest knows he's doing something "wrong" and he is doing it for, say, money. He also has to fall in love with his victim.

But Hermes and Charon (okay, I lied, Charon is such a unique mythos character I was curious though I can't say I like this version of him that much) - they just decide they want to do him and they do everything they can until that happens.

When was I supposed to feel they fell in love?! They just annoyed and manipulated and "drugged" him into just giving up, like, you're hot, you were willing to give me a massage, I give up, let's have sex. The end. (Reminds me of Penny and Leonard but that's a different conversation altogether.)

Resistance is a normal part of the main character's journey. The badass hunter may not want to deal with a bunch of vampires but when they do, they triumph and find cool characters along the way. The x-years-old teenager does not want to move to a different country but the new school is where he finds the love of their love.

This? No, I can't say this felt the same. And you know, this has a lot of potential and an interesting case and characters - this could have been a great read but obviously, someone enjoys it when their food struggles and resists. Ahem. Can't properly recommend *intentionally left blank* stars.

P.S: I was also quite confused when kink was suddenly a part of the equation, should have been fairly important part, yet, nothing. Like, barely even anything. What happened with that?? One or two sentences alluding to the future possible power balance and that's it. Feels flaky. Or maybe that would have exposed some ugly truths?

This is a spin off series. I'd recommend reading the entire Hellbound series by this author first. See my review of the very first book for the correct book order.

I adored this book. More so than it's parent, Hellbound series. I know I tagged it as harem, but it really MMM and I didn't have category so into harem it went.

We met Chandler in a couple of the previous Hellbound series books. He's a government mage, straight laced, but with a sense of humor. He tries to keep everyone at arm's length. Chandler's got an intense work ethic and never takes any vacation. But one day the devil. Lucy, requests his presence at his partner Nelly's birthday party and Chandler thinks why not? HR is delighted he's taking time off.

Meanwhile Hermes and Charon, both gods who have an on again/off again relationship are bickering at Nelly's birthday party when they spy Chandler there and all bets are off. At first they are rivals for his affection. Then they decided to love him together. Chandler, doesn't "do relationships." And tries every conceivable thing to get these two to leave him alone. Despite his growing feelings for the pair.

To complicate things, there's a murderer, or murderers, on the loose carving tokens into women for what ritual no one can quite discern. The gods, wanting to please and spend time with their human, decide to help Chandler with his case.

You see some of the Hellbound characters pop up too. Christine, Taimet, Trony, Deacon. Nyx, jeremy, Soul, Cerebus, Hades, Sephy, Nelly and Lucy make appearance too. It was nice to see all fo them again. Even if it hasn't been too long for me.

There was something about this book that sparked my interest more than the others. I felt even more invested the MCs than I did with the Hellbound books. Chandler was likable and relatable. Hermes a bit of an a$$ at the beginning but he quickly became super sweet. Charon, who I assumed would be a soft, sensitive character, was that, but also dominating too.

There's no BDSM scenes in this, some talk about it. Mild angst. And an HEA.

Two Hottie Godies

“I’m fine, but I’m not ‘baby’ to you.” He cocked his head. “Right. Uhm, do you prefer sweetheart? Honey? Or do you want me to make something up? That’s more personal, right? Hmmm, you have ebony hair and sky-blue eyes, so how about snow prince? Do you want me to call you my little snow prince, baby?”

How even was this? How? Did this immortal think he had the right to…anything, really?’

Oh, our Chandler, who we met in Alexa Piper’s The Devil’s Lover, book 5 in her Hellbound series, now finds himself the object of not one, but two gods’ affections. And NONE of the three are having an easy time of it!

Intentionally secluding himself emotionally, Chandler has history that is heartbreaking, and pivotal to his refusal to acknowledge his growing attraction to both Hermes and Charon. But these two have godly issues and a history of their own, that makes watching their courting of their ‘boyfriend’ hysterically sweet.

Piper is an intricate writer, but each word, each sentence or phrase, lends itself to the depth of her stories. A Subtle Scar is book 1 in her Hellbound Gods series, and this is exciting because this book is a bridge from Lucy and Nelly to this trio, who will continue to flesh out their relationship, while becoming further involved in Chandler’s magical crimefighting.

Intrigue and violence are twisted into a unique and magical MMM romance, where a ‘smashing’ time is the goal!

This was an interesting read for me. I didn't quite know what to expect but I dove into this book anyway.

At first the way this book was written confused me a bit, it was difficult to figure out which character was talking and who they were referring to. But eventually I was able to differentiate that, and I got used to that writing style. Charon, Hermes, and Chandler's relationship progressed very slowly, this is very much a slow burn story. I liked Hermes and Charon's characters, they were goofy and a bit.. childlike at times, but they were really great characters. Chandler was a good character in his own right as well, more serious, more focused and definitely career driven. He wasn't just going to let these two men sleep with him without working for it.

The mystery that's going on in this book is really good, I could have never of guessed what these men ended up finding. It was a complete surprise! I do wish there was more information about Chandler having those 'dreams' about his deceased brother, but there might be more information about that in the next book.

I wish there was more relationship building with these men, but overall it was a great read. Just to let potential readers now, it's definitely a HFN! And I would say the spice level is a.. 4.

*I received an early copy of this book and this is my honest review.*

A Subtle Scar is my first book in the Hellbound universe. I had no trouble jumping in and understanding this world as the story went. Hermes and Charon are immortal gods and I love the ways the author brings them to life. They've lived very, very long lives. Seen countless humans born, and pass away. The landscape of the world has changed countless times over. All too often I find authors writing characters like this and they don't seem any different linguistically/personality wise than any other character. That is not the case here, these immortals are very different. That difference just doesn't reveal itself with any expected gravitas. No, instead they-are-hilarious! Unintentionally, of course. But I was here for it.

Chandler's character was the straight man in this comedy. He was grounded, trying to take care of his job, moving through life with a level of seriousness we might expect from someone who works a job that makes those around him safer. You quickly see the cracks in his facade, though. And his coping mechanisms look less and less healthy as he scrambles to keep the chaos inflicted on his life by Hermes and Charon at bay.

This was an excellent paranormal suspense, hurt/comfort, and throuple romance.

Two immortals try to woo a human mage - very simple, very ordinary, nothing new here! Nothing new here!?!Come again?!Wrong! Really wrong! I tumbled down the rabbit hole and just gobbled up the book in one go! Unbelievable! It's a very refreshing, original, mostly light retelling where mythology meets humanity in an explosion of unexpected twists, turns, banter, snark and a ton of humour. In this dystopia world immortals and humans, some of
them magically gifted, are co existing together. Sometimes their lives collide in sparks of magic, misunderstandings and pure chaos. Because chaos is guaranteed when gods are trying to understand human feelings and insert their divine awesomeness in someone's life. And in our case Hermes and Charon are really unstoppable while chasing their "human" - Chandler. The book gave me a front row seat of the show - How to woo a human mage while he is trying to solve crime cases and survive the vortex of all this Irresistible godlike awesomeness! But the most important !?!...There is always light in the darkness if you really look!/ past trauma and loss described on page and overcoming the grief that followed/

Subtle Scar
Alexa Piper

With Chandler he sleeps on a couch instead of his bed because memories of the past are too much for him.

Hermes and Charon these two between the blunt mouth and fancy clothes you will fall in love with them.

My FAVORITE part was this conversation (I put one side of it, no spoilers).
You mean about the thing-the things- we never talk about like we agreed the morning after the last time and the other time before that, and all the other times?

"and"

That the thing two people did once-the things, that is- can be done again. Only to then never be spoken of again.

The whole conversation had me laughing at these two.

Dragon Mother she always has a lack for wearing clothes and she is like the glue that keeps her "children" happy and safe.

Deacon is all work and hardly no play, hopefully he finds that special someone, you feel his emotions even though he doesn't express them to anyone...
you just know they're there.

The people Chandler work with each one has special task they have for their abilities.

I highly recommend this book.

I found Charon, Hermes, and Chandler’s dynamic to be something of an acquired taste— but over the course of the story, I did totally acquire it. I love a slow burn, whether emotional and/or physical, but there’s something about immortal beings who blur the lines between persistence and pushiness that is sometimes charming and sometimes not-so-much. Of the three, it’s Chandler who won me over first— I found him the most intriguing, loved the depths of his interiority, and was kinda all in on the author’s choice to have the most grown-up and put together of the characters be the mortal, as opposed to the two immortal goofballs, who were, at times, childlike in their engagement with the world. It’s a fascinating world they all inhabit as well, and there was, for me, a nice balance between plot events and character development. 4.5 stars.

I wish I was a better writer or reviewer so I can give A Subtle Scar by Alexa Piper its proper due justice. This story was just so, so good! It takes place in the same Hellbound series. It’s just amazing that the author can turn these terrifying mythological gods that would give anyone nightmares into mushy, lovable and just plain adorable. Though they still pose a danger! Anyone who stands in their way of the possession, which in this case is Chandler.

Not only was the romance part of the story so engrossing and makes me sigh so much, the suspense of the murders was also so captivating. That also speaks to the author’s incredible talent in weaving engrossing storylines into one solid story.

Oh did I mention how I love Lucy and Nelly and the Dragon Mother made some hilarious appearances! Love all the characters including Deacon!

This was a new to me author and I completely enjoyed reading this.
Chandler is a human mage and he works for a federal agency.
Charon and Hermes are immortal gods who have set their eyes on him and immediately set about wooing him.
The chaos commences and their attempts result in snarky, irreverent banter.
Of course there's also the whole situation between Charon and Hermes that they are resolutely determined to ignore.
Chandler has major trauma that he hasn't dealt with so as a result he's built walls around his heart as a defense and finds it incredibly hard to trust people.
The mystery was in intriguing and kept me thoroughly engaged.
This ends in a HFN and I am eagerly awaiting the continuation.

Alexa Piper has created another new series to fall in love with. In this series we have Chandler a mage who has a lot of trust issues because of the darkness in his past. He meets Hermes and Charon, two immortal gods who want to pursue him. Hermes and Charon decide the best way to get what they want is to help Chandler solve the case he is working on. To find out what happens you will have to read the book. It was nice to see characters from her other books in this story. I just love the world and characters Alexa Piper has created. I can't wait for the next book in the series and would definitely recommend this book.

Charon and Hermes are gods, but they seem almost naive in their way to interact with humans.
Watching them try and seduce Chandler was quite funny.
I haven`t read the series from wich this book is born, but I didn`t need to, this is a full story on its own.
I haven`t read a book by Añexa Piper that I didn`t like and her take of greek gods in the actual times is funny and well brought up.
The way their powers are described and how they earnestly build a relationship with Chandler with him not noticing was hilarious. And the satisfactory way we reach their HEA is great.
I really recommend this book.

This is my first book that I’ve read from this author and it definitely won’t be my last. Chandler is a mage and was invited to Lionel and Lucifer’s house for a birthday party. There he meets Charon and Hermes who both have a quick connection to him. Chandler wants nothing to do with them and closes his bedroom door in their faces. Their relationship starts from there as both immortals are both trying to woo him. This is a slow burn romance as they try to solve a mystery. Great world building and great chemistry between them. I cannot wait to read what happens next.

Yes!! Just yes!! I just can not get enough of the awesomeness of the characters from this book! I am a HUGE fan of this author's amazing Hellbound series, and I was so thrilled to see some of those characters in this book! Chandler, Charon, and Heremes are utter perfection, and I love every moment I got to know these three. The story is great, writing fantastic, and I can not wait to see these three again!

So good! ❤️

I adore this story. It's funny and action-packed. Charon and Hermes are so persistent in trying to love Chandler. They're so sweet to him. It was fun having the mc's from previous books in this story. It was like getting to check on them. I couldn't put this book down, and I didn't want it to end. I'm so happy that there's more to come! I wish there was an audiobook for this.

This is an interesting start to what seems like another great series from Alexa Piper. I enjoyed the slow burn start to Chandler, Hermes and Charon's relationship and the mystery of the story held my interest completely. I loved the character crossover also.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

You know I had no expectations going into this but now I'm hooked on the entire world! I'm now going through Lucy and Nelly's books. Love it when one book leads to five more.

Also, for those who don't like it when throuples just bang and get together, this isn't like that. Our non-god MC needs time and healing so I would call this a semi-slow-burn with some excellent sexual tension.

I loved this new series starter! Hermes and Charon are adorably clueless. I enjoyed their banter and bickering as they were figuring out ways to woo Chandler. Chandler's backstory is heartbreaking and I hope we learn more about him in the next book. This was a fun blend of mythology and modern times.

I'm a little bit frustrated !! The story was sooooo loooooonnnnnggggg !!!! I skipped many pages ! What interested me was the developping relationship between the 3 characters. It was sadly lacking ! Hermes was sexually frustrated and rightly so ! The sex only happened in the last pages of the book ! Very frustrating !!! Ok, there was a couple of blowjob throughout the book but that's it !
