Zombies Don't Cry
Maddy Swift is just a normal girl—a high school junior surviving class with her best friend and hoping the yummy new kid, Stamp, will ask her out. When he finally does, her whole life changes.

Epic awesomeness. Epic.
First- I have to mention some of the crazy fabulous chapter titles of this book!
Chapter 6- You Might Be A Zombie If...
Chapter 10- The Proper Care and Feeding of Zombies

A Pimp Called Death? WIN. I mean really... It just doesn't get any more badass than that okay?
Maddy Swift is the epitome of freaking spectacular. She is delightfully witty and entertaining, she is filled to the brim with raw teenage appeal! I LOVED her.
There is one (try 900, but I'm trying NOT to overwhelm everyone) part that I have to mention because I absolutely reveled in this particular detail!
*possible minor spoiler*
After Maddy gets taken to her Zombie initiation ceremony (YES! I swear... a ceremony!) Dane, Chloe and her are driving back to town and Dane is patiently explaining the difference between a Zombie and a Zerker (the bad Zombies- oh yes... there's a difference). Maddy makes a comment about vampires and Dane looks at her all nuts and says,
"Are you crazy? Vampires aren't real! That's pure fiction!"
I adore this! Usually in a paranormal type book, once you find out that one species of supernatural is real... then we find out that every myth we've ever heard is reality. Not so in Zombies Don't Cry- Another WIN, to make this book completely unique!
Let's talk about Stamp... He's the new guy in school, a jock, and super hot- and he totally has a thing for Maddy! He likes her pre-Zombie and post-Zombie crisis *Awwwww* There's one problem... Zombies can't date Normals. Hey! It's in the handbook and I didn't make the rules! Zombie Law #1 people. Learn it.
Oh my gosh, how I love Stamp! Is that totally creepy since he's like 17 and I'm 27? *tears* Stamp is just 'that guy' you know what I mean! He's yummy times 2, but also sweet and nice and uuuum totally built. When Maddy turns him down for the Fall Formal (ahem! Zombie Law #1 remember?) I thought I was going to die. DIE, I tell you! I'm thinking,
"Pick me! Pick me! I'll go with you Stamp!"
Pathetic? Entirely possibly. I'm okay with that.
I'm almost done, I SWEAR! One of my main 'issues' with zombie romance is the whole "I'm going to eat you alive." situation... HOW exactly does that say I love you? That's just ONE MORE thing that makes Fischer's ZDC absolute perfection to me. Maddy wasn't bitten and turned... she was struck by lightening and she's living on lamb brains- seasoned with thyme and garlic, smothered in soy sauce and chilled over ice!
By the end of the book I still loved Stamp... but I was totally Team Dane! Everyone MUST read this right now so we can chat about it!!!!

I picked this book up expecting it to be a funny read, with a little bit of horror and romance tossed in. What I got was a pretty flat book with a sudden and abrupt turn at the end of the novel. And sadly, despite what the subject matter might lead you to expect, there's very little horror in the book at all.
First, the good: the zombie explanation. In this world, zombies are created through electrical currents. If you get electrocuted and die, the electrical current can bring you back as a zombie. Consequently, you crave brains as a source of electricity. As a zombie, you're stronger than normal, more difficult to kill, and basically live forever, unless somebody chops your head off or electrocutes you. It's not really an explanation you want to look at too closely, but it's a unique take on things. Good zombies can get by on animal brains and the like, while bad zombies ("zerkers", short for "berserkers") are more of your traditional zombie: mindless and violent. Not surprisingly, our protagonist is a good zombie. The method in which she becomes one is pretty random and coincidental, but hey, this is a list of good things, so whatever.
I also found the protagonist, Maddy, to be very clear-headed and focused. Unlike a lot of female protagonists who tend to get distracted at the drop of a hat (forget the bloodthirsty vampires chasing after her, she's got a boy to make out with!), Maddy is consistently focused on tackling the problems at hand.
Now, the not good: Maddy. I said I liked her clear-headedness, but she's MUCH too accepting. When she becomes a zombie, she only takes about 24 hours or so to come to terms with things. No crying, no hysterical screaming, nada. It was nice not to have a protagonist in constant denial, but it also pulled me out of the story a lot.
In summary: this is not a terrible book, which is why I gave in two stars instead of one. It honestly just comes across as a book that's desperately trying to fit into the current paranormal romance craze, but doesn't really fit. Had the author gone more for the horror and left the romance behind completely, I think it could have worked.

Rusty Fischer is officially my new hero! The story he created is simply phenomenal. Original and so unbelievably fun to read, it's a MUST-HAVE not only for every Zombie fan out there, but for anyone who loves great YA paranormal/horror books with amazing sense of humor.
Maddy is a super likable character. She’s more or less an ordinary teenage girl, who doesn’t wear tons of make-up and prefers khaki pants over flashy dresses. She might not be the most popular girl in school, but she gets by just fine, having her best friend, Hazel, and her open-minded and understanding dad at her side. And then things get even better, when she literally runs into the "new, hot guy", Stamp, who just recently moved to the town. Stamp asks her to accompany him to a party at a friend's house and Maddy gladly accepts the invite. Everything seems to be going just peachy, she even manages to sneak out of the house without her dad noticing and she almost makes it to the party... Almost, because then something unexpected happens. It starts raining and Maddy can hear the thunder approaching. It's getting closer with every minute and then it hits somewhere not far away from where she stands, and Maddy collapses to the ground. After awhile she wakes up face down in the puddle of mud, all drenched in muddy water, with her makeup streaking down her face. Not only, though, her clothes and make up are ruined and she missed out on her chance to spend the evening with her prince charming, but she suddenly realizes that her heart is not beating, like, AT ALL, and she's not breathing either. As it turns out the lightning didn't strike somewhere close to Maddy. Maddy was stricken with the lightning. And now she's turned into a living dead, a zombie!
It would be an understatement to say that her life was about to be turned up-side-down. She's an undead now and she has to learn how to survive as one. On the Internet she learns that she has to consume some brains within 48 hours from being turned, otherwise the transition to a zombie won't be completed and she will die. Again. And so Maddy goes for a “midnight-snack run” to the local grocery store and orders 10 pounds of goat brains (because these are the only brains available). While waiting for her order to be prepared, she's joined at the store by two of her school-mates, Dane and Chloe. These two, as it later turns out, are both zombies, too, and they take Maddy to meet the Council (Zombie Elders). As a new Zombie she must vow to uphold the Zombie laws and fight the Zerkers (Zombies gone wild!). She’s told that she can continue "living" like she used to, but she can't let any human know about the existence of the "unholy" kind. Much to her desperation, she also learns that she's not allowed to date Normals, and if she breaks any of the rules, she will die. Again. Maddy might be a zombie, with her body ice-cold and her heart dead in her chest, she might not be able to cry, sweat or gain weight, but she is still capable of feeling the very same emotions she used to feel before turning into a living-dead. Zombies don't cry, but they most definitely would if they could.

I loved it, loved it, loved it!!! It's not just another Zombie flick, this book is so much more than brain-eating zombies roaming around and groaning "brains... eat brainssssss..", it's a refreshing and original new take on the Zombie world, based on a solid, gripping plot, with fantastic characters and positively geeky sense of humor. I got sucked into the story from the very first page and, much to my husband's annoyance, wasn't able to put it down until I literally passed out on the couch. I picked it up first thing in the morning and finished it before even eating breakfast, that's how great it was! (I mean, come on, you gotta appreciate the fact that I chose this book over my husband's strawberry waffles, right? It never happened before!).
Zombies Don't Cry is nearly 400 hundred pages long, and yet there's not a single passage that would come across as boring or unnecessary. Every word accounts for something. And the humor.. you just gotta love the humor! I was constantly cracking up and shaking my head in pure amazement. Even the way the chapters are named already suggests that you're about to be taken on a crazy zombie-coaster ride (Chapter 5: Rainbows keep falling on my dead; Chapter 13: Cloudy with a chance of gray matter; Chapter 23: Any grave will do). Rusty's writing style is superb, light and extremely enjoyable. I started reading expecting a humorous and witty story, and I wasn't disappointed, but what I didn't at all expect was the ending, which actually made me cry. All of a sudden this book got so much more depth and I realized how well-thought-out the whole story was. The ending really got to me!
And Maddy.. Maddy is just such a great character. She goes through so much and yet she’s still strong and positive, she keeps a healthy distance to herself and she even manages to joke about all that has happened to her. She's definitely one of my favorite female characters! All the other characters, even the smallest ones, were vivid and real. Each and every single one of them was very essential to the story.
I’m thankful to Rusty that he didn’t do to Zombies, what Stephenie Meyer did to Vampires, i.e. he didn’t embellish them, didn’t make them all lovely, pretty and friendly (and sparkly!). He depicted them as they were, with gray skin and dark circles under their eyes. It worked really well, making the story more believable. These are not beasts that need to feed on human brains, but choose to SACRIFICE THEMSELVES and limit their diet to goat brains. They just don’t really care where their brains come from, as long as they can eat some! Isn’t that just so much better? Thank you, Rusty!

Okay, so I open my mailbox and see a review book for Zombies Don’t Cry, and I have no idea what to expect. I read the first chapter and think, “is this author for real?”. Then I keep reading. Then I’m soon flying through the pages, laughing, talking to myself and the characters, and thoroughly enjoying myself. Rusty Fischer is an amazingly talented author. His writing style is clean, clear, smart, and fun.
Seventeen-year-old Maddy Swift is an awesome character. I easily related to her. The thoughts this girl has, had me rolling on the floor laughing. It’s so refreshing to read a character who doesn’t whine or complain, but accepts a lightning strike to the head with grace and humor. She’s having a tough time coming to terms with being a zombie right before the Fall Formal after having met her dream guy, Stamp, who actually wants to take her, and, be her boyfriend. Only one problem, according to the zombie guide, it’s against the rules to date Normals. As Chloe and Dane help her adjust to her new life, a couple of Zerkers—bad zombies—are stalking fellow classmates and threatening Maddy. The three band together to stop them. However, even though Maddy still pines for Stamp, she’s getting close to Dane, the bad boy zombie that’s fast becoming a love interest. I have to admit, I’m Team Dane all the way! But one line of the book really made me stumble… “… because he’s my boy.” Ahhh! I love that line. You’re just going to have to read the book because I don’t do spoilers. But oh, I can totally understand Maddy’s reasoning. Fischer sets up a great love triangle here, but I'm still Team Dane! (Can't believe I'm saying this about a zombie! But he's one hot zombie.)
What surprised me most about this book was the last chapter. I’m reading along, having fun, laughing, and all of a sudden I find myself feeling deeply for these characters. So much that I actually tear up, and am desperately not wanting the story to end. I hope there’s going to be a second one, because in my opinion, Maddy’s story is just beginning. This book is witty, funny, romantic, and downright brilliant. I highly recommend it to lovers of Paranormal Romance as well as readers who just want a breath of fresh air in the YA market.

Ugh. I'm sorry, but I hated this book. It is likely one of the most ridiculous teen novels I have read to date - and I work at a library, so I do a ton of reading.
The characters depressed me. There was no depth to them and not much development occured throughout the course of the story. I thought the style of writing fell more into 'J Fic' instead of 'YA Supernatural' (meaning it was very juvenile to me and belonged downstairs on the lower floor with all the kids' books). I didn't feel this book really catered to me personally as a teen - and saying that doesn't mean I was disappointed due to a lack of sexual content. Sexual content is not the primary thing most teens want to read about (It isn't for me, at least) and it is not how I critique a book. I was disappointed due to a lack of a well thought out plot. It wasn't interesting. There was a bit of an inciting incident (the whole, OMG I turned into a zombie thing), but there wasn't really any rising action leading to that, or stellar dialogue. It was just lacking in general.
I regret having to write such a negative review, because this book did have potential. The subject of zombies hasn't been attempted much in teen fiction, so it hasn't become cliched or overdone (yet). The author really could have taken this novel, done a smashing job writing it, and therefore opened the genre to more interest, but I feel she didn't accomplish that in the end.
The characters depressed me. There was no depth to them and not much development occured throughout the course of the story. I thought the style of writing fell more into 'J Fic' instead of 'YA Supernatural' (meaning it was very juvenile to me and belonged downstairs on the lower floor with all the kids' books). I didn't feel this book really catered to me personally as a teen - and saying that doesn't mean I was disappointed due to a lack of sexual content. Sexual content is not the primary thing most teens want to read about (It isn't for me, at least) and it is not how I critique a book. I was disappointed due to a lack of a well thought out plot. It wasn't interesting. There was a bit of an inciting incident (the whole, OMG I turned into a zombie thing), but there wasn't really any rising action leading to that, or stellar dialogue. It was just lacking in general.

Niente respiro…
Niente battiti del cuore…
solo un corpo pallido e freddo…
come ti sentiresti se di colpo ti svegliassi così?
Chiediamolo a Maddy, una normale adolescente che la sera dove forse poteva scoppiare l’amore con il ragazzo nuovo della scuola, un fulmine ha deciso di colpirla.
E si, tra tanti posti ha scelto di prendere in pieno proprio lei, al centro della sua testa lasciandole un bel buco , con tanto di contorno di capelli bruciacchiati, difficile da nascondere !!
Maddy si risveglia confusa qualche ora più tardi, si trova a pochi metri di distanza da quella casa dove dovrebbe esserci una festa in corso, ma tutto è buio.. sembra che la festa sia già finita da tempo.
Scombussolata e fradicia,perché oltre la sfiga del lampo, è anche svenuta su una pozzanghera, decide di ritornare a casa per sistemarsi… Ma c’è qualcosa di strano, percepisce sensazioni non umane… perché il suo cuore non batte? Perché non riesce più a respirare?
“Mi si ferma il cuore. Recupero lo specchietto dalla borsetta, lo apro e mi ritrovo davanti la mia faccia pallida e inespressiva che si sforza di non piangere. Sembro un cadavere riesumato. Nel vero senso della parola.”
Se succedeva a me come minimo mi sarei messa ad urlare per la strada e cercare aiuto, ma Maddy no!
“Solo quando arrivo a casa e mi controllo il battito cardiaco, capisco di sentirmi rigida perché sono morta.”
Decide di fare una ricerca su internet per trovare una valida spiegazione, così si imbatte in un sito che in base alle sue risposte dichiara la sua sentenza…. Maddy sei uno zombie! Corri … hai solo 48 ore per cibarti di cervello fresco !
“I neozombi DEVONO ingerire un cervello entro 48 ore dalla rianimazione per non correre il rischio di morire... del tutto. Se non desideri rimanere uno zombi, ignora questa parte. Se invece hai ancora voglia di vivere, spiacente, ma DEVI MANGIARE UN CERVELLO.”
Ora parliamone… se dovessi dare retta ad internet per tutte le volte che ho cercato i sintomi dei miei malesseri, per lui ero già spacciata XD
Però Maddy è tranquilla, assimila il colpo e anche a causa del suo stomaco che brontola, decide di recarsi al supermercato vicino per acquistare quanto più cervello può.
«Be’, quanti chili di cervello d’agnello puoi darmi?» (Mentalmente aggiungo questa domanda alla lista delle cose che non avrei mai immaginato di chiedere a un adulto alle 2:27 del mattino)”
Sarà proprio in quel posto che scoprirà di non essere sola, a Barracuda Bay infatti gli zombi sembrano andare di “moda”, altri due suoi compagni di scuola si ritrovano nella stessa situazione.
Saranno proprio loro ad aiutarla a conoscere questo nuovo mondo abitato da zombi buoni tenuti a rispettare il regolamento degli Anziani, ma anche abitato dai classici cattivi rappresentato dai Zerker che invece di accontentarsi di cervelli di animali morti, si cibano solamente di quello umano appena cacciato.
“Dopo qualche istante mi chiede: «Allora, sai... cosa... sei?».
Riesco a liberarmi e mi allontano.
È il momento di Chloe. «Secondo me lo sai, Maddy, altrimenti perché una ragazzina per bene come te dovrebbe venire al supermercato a comprare del cervello a quest’ora?»
L’aspetto comico, se vogliamo chiamarlo così, della situazione è che Maddy non è per niente brava a camuffare il suo nuovo aspetto, la sua migliore amica Hazel la crede malata,come del resto chiunque la guardi…
“Mi dà un pizzicotto sulla guancia ma subito ritrae la mano come se avesse toccato un ferro rovente. «Cavolo, sei fredda, Maddy. Di più, sei un ghiacciolo. Sicura di voler venire a scuola oggi?»”
Grazie all’aiuto della sua nuova amica zombi , Chloe, riuscirà a trasformare il suo aspetto in una vera e propria dark con un cerone in viso per camuffare il suo aspetto da "non viva".
“«Ascoltami bene,» risponde sospirando mentre poggia alla cassa la cipria e altri 30 dollari di ombretto, rossetto e smalto neri «sei già diventata un po’, come dire, grigia. E sei morta da quanto, due giorni? Per lunedì mattina sarai costretta a metterti (a) tanto di quel phard da sembrare un clown o (b) imitare me e diventare una dark. E, credimi Maddy, quest’ultima ipotesi è molto più credibile.»”
La questione aspetto però sarà l’ultimo dei suoi pensieri, una nuova minaccia è in agguato… gli Zerker le danno la caccia… ma non sarà l’unica ad essere in pericolo, ma anche tutta la scuola con amicizie incluse.
Anche se mi sto divertendo un sacco a raccontarvi questa storia, ahimè devo stopparmi!
Lo so, lo so …volete saperne di più, ma proprio questo è il bello, lasciare le parole sospese in aria per dare a voi la voglia di catturarle leggendo il libro!

Devo ammettere una cosa, prima di leggerlo ero piuttosto prevenuta, sarà che non amo molto gli zombi.. E’ da quando sono piccola che ho una certa fobia nei loro confronti , causa probabile dei troppi film e quindi evito letture come questa.. ma dico, grazie al cielo che l’ho letto!
Gli zombie non piangono è uno di quei libri a cui ci si affeziona in modo contagioso, rimanendo incollati alle sue pagine e pensando alla sua storia anche una volta terminato.
E’ una lettura assai piacevole e divertente, Maddy è proprio un bel personaggio e il fatto che proprio lei diventi uno zombi non fa che rendere il tutto più comico.
La trama è diversa dal solito, molto originale e ben articolata, senza essere mai scontata e banale.
Gli zombie non piangono è un libro che divorerete velocemente, lo stile è genuino e scorrevole e non vi annoierà mai… posso dirvi che l’ho terminato in un solo giorno perché curiosissima di conoscere il finale.
Un libro che accosta alla perfezione elementi horror con sentimenti forti, quali l’amicizia, l’amore e la famiglia, non rimarrete delusi da questo libro che per halloween è perfetto .
Una delle zombie-story più discusse del momento, primo di una serie horror, paranormal romance e comica, intitolata Living Dead Love Story edita dalla giunti Y...
Se vogliamo trovarla l’unica pecca del libro è il finale, perché rimane sospeso con troppi punti di domanda e nessuna risposta, ma facendo parte di una serie confido nel trovarle molto presto.
Per concludere… amerete Maddy, con il suo modo di fare e con le sue riflessioni spesso troppo ridicole e comiche, supererete grazie a lei la fobia degli zombi ... quindi state attente a dove mettete i piedi ;)

Che meraviglia questo libro!
Adoro le storie scritte con ironia, con un linguaggio così fluente e con trame intriganti perciò "Gli zombi non piangono" è stata una lettura super azzeccata per la mia estate.
Avevo cominciato a leggere questo libro qualche tempo fa, poi mi ero accorta della sua appartenenza ad una serie interrotta in Italia e lo avevo mollato. Non volevo soffrire con un finale che mi avrebbe lasciato tanti dubbi.
In preda ad una voglia irrefrenabile di conoscere la storia di Maddy, però, alla fine non ho resistito e ho letto questo libro fino al finale che avevo tanto temuto. Posso dirvi che sicuramente il finale da spazio al sequel e che per capire come finirà la storia dovete necessariamente leggere gli altri libri che in Italia non esistono, però non è uno di quei finali che proprio non si possono sopportare.
Diciamo che posso già immaginare cosa accadrà dopo e mi accontento di quello che hanno portato in Italia.
A mio parere questo può essere catalogato come un libro per ragazzi perfetto per tutte le età. Non può non piacere, non può non farvi ridere e non potete non amare i personaggi. Chloe, Maddy e Dane sono davvero un trio che non dimenticherò facilmente! Li ho adorati.
Per quanto riguarda la trama non vuole essere pretenziosa, intrecciata o troppo articolata. È una trama semplicissima ma vi farà venire voglia di continuare a leggere.
Il pezzo forte del libro sono sicuramente i bellissimi titolo dei capitoli, ogni volta scoppiavo a ridere.
Mi dispiace che non ci siano i seguiti e magari un giorno li leggerò in inglese, però per adesso va bene così. Non lasciatevi scoraggiare, se vi va di leggerlo FATELO.

I've been keeping my eyes on this book for quite sometime now and I finally got myself an ARC for a review. I was surprised receiving this mail, I was hysterical! lol! Anyway, I finished this book last Saturday and today I am posting my review regarding to this awesome book. Let's start shall we?
The Plot. The storyline obviously related to zombies. The first thing will pop into our minds that, it is just another mindless eating humans. Actually, this book is way more beyond that. I usually watched movies, that zombies had only one reason to live -- And that is to eat humans. Zombies Don't Cry have something more... originality and freshness. I ask you, how do zombies turned into zombies anyway? Usually, the answer is a virus and then you're one of them, so the cycle starts on eating each other, right? This book is not like that. There is more logical and detailed explanation about it and I found out it in this book. Cool? Definitely! :]
There isn't much of a shocker here though not all books have to have a dumb-founding scenarios. I may say, I am still drawn to read it up to its last page. The narration from the protagonist point of view has a simple yet unique way of telling it. To be honest, Maddy [our dear MC], is one of those funniest narrator in a books I read, is very awesome, I loved her!
Fischer written it so very comprehensible, each words are easy to be picked up. There were no tying-knots making me think too much or turning me to a confused nut-job but it was given an exact point. Like you added sugar on your coffee and it tastes right. No more, no less.
I love how the book is not only focused on how to became a zombie. Focuses also on friendship, betrayal, trust, loss, sacrifice and love. Which is great to add up to the story. Fischer really is a great author! :]
The Characters. Maddy is a great, cool and awesome protagonist. I loved it when she is adding some of her funny side comments even on desperate times. Which seems to be a little bit relieving for me. First, you are intently reading what is says and then, pop!, there she goes with her side comment. Making you roll in laughter just in time for the next climax of the story. She even progresses from start 'til the end. At the beginning, she's just a shadow behind someones back and then changed to a different person [aside on becoming a zombie]. You're definitely gonna love her like a snap! :]
Stamp, it's not a stamp from a mail but a male MC of the story. Actually, I think there are 2 male MC's here, him and Dane. They're both great and good addition to the book. Of course, they are Maddy's love triangle. *giggles* If you're asking me whom I will choose, the fact is... I really don't know whom I want for Maddy. This is the only book [I think] that I am not sure who is the perfect partner for the female MC. I am really confused, on this part. Cuz both are great for her. ARGH! I really don't know how to answer it! lol! XD Every character is very easy to carry around that this book never losses it sense of humor.
Flaw? I am thinking of something though I don't have one. Which is cool, that means this book is totally wicked awesome! If there is... tell me but I am going to refuse it anyway, lol! I love this book so much! :]
Other Thoughts. The last chapter turns out to be quite different, I came from laughing and laughing then all of a sudden I went some place deeper in feelings for the characters. At the end there is something odd happened, guessing it, that this books had a part two. I hope so because I actually don't want the story to end like that. But i am quite sure there will be a next installment.
I have so many great things to say about this book that I can't even put it in here or maybe I am just out of words. Zombies Don't Cry is clean, clear, smart and absolutely fun to read! Each pages are never boring and surely you won't put this book down! I highly recommend this for the readers-in-love with Paranormal Romance and others who just want to have something new from the YA community! A well deserve salute for Rusty Fischer! :]

Ho cominciato a leggere "Gli zombie non piangono" perchè: 1) avevo davvero voglia di qualcosa di diverso, di una lettura fresca, allegra, lontana dai generi che leggo ultimamente; 2) la copertina del libro mi fa letteralmente impazzire (anche se io ho l'ebook... vabbè, dettagli!:P) e 3) volevo constatare quanto realmente fosse carino questo romanzo che stanno praticamente leggendo tutti ed elogiando. Ebbene, non ne ho sbagliata una! Gli zombi non piangono è davvero un libro che fa morire dal ridere (non è una battuta:P) e carinissimo, la protagonista è talmente ironica che conquista da subito. E' una di quelle di cui, dopo aver letto una sola battuta, sai che ti ritroverai ad adorare. Ed è stato esattamente così per me, per gran parte del libro, almeno.
E' stato facile identificarmi con Maddy, ragazza che non ama le luci della ribalta, schiva osservatrice che occupa gli ultimi banchi della classe, amica di una cheerleader egocentrica e viziata... Sì, mi ci riconosco proprio! Solo che, se pure tutto ciò le sta bene (e non capisco in che modo, specie l'ultima parte), un bel giorno, all'improvviso, cambia tutto. Drasticamente.
Proprio quando lei, ragazza non troppo carina né troppo popolare, viene invitata ad un appuntamento dal ragazzo più figo della scuola, nuovo arrivato e kicker della squadra di football, ecco che il destino le si avventa contro. Uscita di nascosto per raggiungere Stamp (il fighetto, che tra l'altro - piccolo dettaglio - somiglia a Superman *sbav*) ad una festa, si scatenerà una tempesta violentissima e Maddy, pensate un po', finirà con beccarsi un bel fulmine in testa. Badate bene! Non una pallottola, o un mattone, o una pietra scagliata da qualche bullo di passaggio. UN FULMINE. IN TESTA.
Da qui avranno inizio le disavventure di Maddy, che potrebbe essere benissimo un titolo alternativo per questo romanzo. Maddy si risveglia, dopo essere collassata un paio d'ore con la faccia nel fango, e scopre... (a parte il buco nella testa:P) di essere diventata uno Zombi. Naturalmente, non lo capirà all'istante, prima dovrà fare una piccola ricerca su Google:P
Zombi. Non morta. E terribilmente sfortunata la nostra povera Maddy.
Ma non tutti i mali vengono per nuocere... eh no! Sebbene non sia facile accettare la sua nuova natura e tutto ciò che ne consegue (abitudini da zombi e pericolosi individui a darle il tormento), Maddy dimostrerà di essere forte, coraggiosa e combattiva ma soprattutto spiritosa, sventure a parte. Al suo fianco si ritroverà due inaspettati amici, Dane e Chloe, zombie anche loro, che la sommergeranno di dritte e regole e la proteggeranno come possono, anche se, alla fine, sarà Maddy a proteggere loro:) E così, tra una dieta a base di cervelli per mantenersi non-morta (talvolta, per sbaglio, seguita anche dal padre:P), sfuriate e segreti con l'amica Hazel, mostruosi Zerker a perseguitarla, Maddy trascorrerà le sue giornate cercando, per quanto possibile, di familiarizzare con ciò che è diventata, senza mai realmente capirne il perchè...
Mi è piaciuto davvero parecchio questo romanzo, che trovo abbia una marcia in più e possa soddisfare i gusti di molti, anche i non amanti del genere. Qualche nota negativa però devo farla. Innanzitutto riguardo Hazel, un personaggio terribilmente insopportabile. Io davvero non mi capacito di come Maddy riesca ad esserle amica senza provare la tentazione di schiaffeggiarla ogni volta che apre bocca. Fortunatamente, alla fine, la storia si evolve come ho profondamente desiderato per mooooooolti capitoli e Maddy può prendersi la sua bella rivincita. Senza infamia né lode, però. Colpisce molto il fatto che in un romanzo dallo stile così fresco e leggero vengano comunque a delinearsi spunti su cui riflettere, ispirati da gesti compiuti per necessità, con inevitabili rimorsi e rimpianti da portarsi dietro... diciamo per l'eternità...

Maddy è una studentessa di liceo abbastanza imbranata che ha sempre vissuto all’ombra della sua migliore amica Hazel perciò quando Stamp, il nuovo kicker della squadra di football nonché ragazzo più carino della scuola, la invita ad una festa esclusiva non può rifiutare. Infuria un temporale ma Maddy decide lo stesso di uscire di casa per andare alla festa di nascosto dal padre. Una volta fuori, però, viene colpita da un fulmine e la sua vita cambia per sempre; infatti quando si risveglia scopre di non avere più battito cardiaco e di non riuscire più a respirare. Maddy è diventata una tra le creature che più la terrorizzano: Uno zombi. Ma nell’affrontare il cambiamento da Normale a zombi, non è da sola. Con lei ci sono infatti due amici davvero speciali che la aiuteranno a capire cosa le sta succedendo. Però è risaputo che oltre agli amici ci sono i nemici: Maddy è, infatti, entrata nel mirino di due zombi molto pericolosi che vogliono mangiarle il cervello a qualunque costo; si troverà, così, costretta ad affrontare una minaccia più pericolosa di quel che sembra.
Gli zombi non piangono è uno tra i romanzi più divertenti che abbia mai letto. Rusty Fischer è riuscito a miscelare romanticismo e amicizia con un tocco di ironia che ha reso il suo romanzo davvero indimenticabile. La trama non è particolarmente complessa, ma presenta parecchi colpi di scena che personalmente ho gradito moltissimo ma soprattutto che hanno regalato alla trama azione e coinvolgimento, così da invogliare il lettore a continuare la lettura, capitolo dopo capitolo. Nulla è lasciato al caso, tutto ha una propria spiegazione: Dal soprannome di determinati personaggi a fatti e avvenimenti che inizialmente possono sembrare privi di un perché. Lo stile dell’autore è semplice, piacevole e adatto non solo ad un pubblico di giovani lettori ma anche ad un pubblico più adulto.
I personaggi sono tutti ben caratterizzati. Personalmente ho apprezzato davvero Dane e Chloe che, se all’inizio sembravano scontrosi ed al quanto insopportabili, si sono, poi, dimostrati due persone speciali e davvero simpatiche. Non ho sopportato il carattere che Hazel mostra nei confronti di Maddy, per questo mi è sembrata parecchio antipatica e approfittatrice. Non ho ben capito il carattere di Stamp che in alcuni momenti sembra debole e timido, mentre in altri forte e spigliato. Chi mi ha fatto più ridere in assoluto è, però, il padre di Maddy, medico legale della cittadina di Barracuda Bay, che pur essendo un personaggio secondario riesce a far divertire molto il lettore grazie ai suoi buffi atteggiamenti. Anche i nemici sono particolari e ben caratterizzati e li ho trovati tanto divertenti quanto spaventosi.
Gli zombi non piangono è riuscito a farmi ridere, sospirare, arrabbiare e anche commuovere. Un libro bello e piacevole per chi cerca una lettura leggera ed ironica, magari accompagnata da una tazza fumante di cioccolata calda, con la quale passare pomeriggi tranquilli e spensierati.

I don’t know what took me so long to jump on the Zombie bandwagon but have I ever been missing out! Not only have I been missing out on this fantastic sub-genre, but I have been missing out on Rusty Fischer’s hilariously quirky and engaging writing style. I truly did not expect that a book about zombies would make me laugh as hard as it did while at the same time pulling at my emotions.
The thing about Zombies Don’t Cry that really connected me to the novel and the characters was the fact that Fischer made his zombies aware of their actions, there was an actual personality to connect to – and it was a very well developed personality at that! These zombies were still dead, and looked it, they still craved brains but they chose to buy their brains from the all night deli instead of eating the those of their friends. Fischer’s zombies had a conscience, relationships (although zombie-human dating was strictly forbidden) and feelings.
When I started reading Zombies Don’t Cry I was expecting the stiff looking dead guys screaming “brains!” and I did find some of them in this book but they were called Zerkers. Zerkers are the zombies that choose to munch on human brains and bite whomever they wish, turning them into Zerkers as well. I loved the fact that there were good and bad zombies, even more I loved that fact that there were rules that the good zombies had to follow, or else!

Fischer didn’t simply write about zombies searching for the kindest and most unobtrusive way to eat their brains but he also touched on some really relevant issues to teenagers. Feelings of being invisible, being constantly overshadowed by a more popular or social friend, fickle friends who are willing to turn on you the second something seemingly better comes along. It’s all in there, and it’s written about in a way that makes it feel real.

openmouthed stares and finger points of my fellow
classmates as I wander through the halls, the loneliest
zombie on the planet.”
I really need to take a second here and talk about the writing in this book because I highlighted so many sections of text that showcased Fischer’s dark humor and brilliant sarcasm. The dialogue flowed so naturally that I literally flew through the pages; there was nothing at all forced or contrived about it. The plot, the action and super likeable characters just pulled me further and further into the story. This was a fantastic introduction to Rusty Fisher’s writing and I am sitting on pins and needles waiting to read more of his work!
The concept of Zombies Don’t Cry is genius and so well written. A nearly 400 pages I wouldn’t have thought it would be a 24 hour read, but I couldn’t stop myself - it was that good! If you haven’t read Zombie’s Don’t Cry you simply must do it now!

OK, so-- this book was pretty much fa-reaking awesome. Now, I'll be totally honest-- zombies? Not so much my fave paranormal creature. But this book-- the story, the characters, the dialog-- I don't know which one I liked more. Zombies Don't Cry was so much fun to read, and I'm really glad I decided to pick this one up as my first ever zombie-themed book!
Maddy Swift is just your typical high-school girl. She's not popular, but she's not an outcast, she's not gorgeous, but she's not ugly-- just an average chick, who happens to have a huge crush on Stamp, the new guy in town. That is, until the night Maddy sneaks out of the house to go to a party, gets struck by lightning, and wakes up feeling... different. Like, stone-cold, no-heartbeat kind of different.
Maddy was so funny-- her snarky attitude had me laughing throughout the entire book, and it was beyond hilarious to read about life as a teenage zombie-- who knew? Poor preppy Maddy has to turn Goth in order to hide her "zombiness" from everyone, she can't date any "Normals" (AKA living, breathing humans) meaning Stamp is out of the picture, and she can't even cry about the injustice of it all because-- zombies have no tears!
The thing I loved about this book was how Rusty Fischer actually managed to make you able to relate to zombies. They weren't your typical clumsy, lurching, brain-crazed creatures-- they actually had personalities, coherent thoughts, and a conscience (well, the good ones anyways). This is the first time I've ever seen zombies from this kind of human perspective, which was really cool. I mean, I never thought I'd actually be feeling sorry for a zombie!
The character dialog is something else I want to point out, because it rocked-- it was just done so incredibly well. I've read quite a few YA books and I don't think I've ever read dialog quite this witty and still have it come across as being natural. There was nothing contrived about it-- and I always notice when dialog sounds fake or like the author is trying too hard to sound "hip" (jeez, did i just use the word "hip?") But yeah, awesome dialog made this story that much more amazing, and I was pretty much doubled over in laughter throughout the whole thing.
All in all, this book was just so fantastically original and creative. Seriously, I can't even pick what part I loved more-- the fact that Maddie eats lamb brains chilled on ice and seasoned with spices? That there's a Zombie Guide that every Good Zombie has to follow? (not to be confused with the Zerkers!! They're the BAD zombies that eat human brains!) That Stamp AND Dane were the cutest guys ever and I completely felt Maddie's pain in having to choose between the two? Yeah, total win right here. The only one **small** thing I would bring up for the faint-of-heart is the gross-out factor-- I know, I know, I can be such a wimp, but be prepared for lots o' gore if you read this one. Otherwise, all I have to say is: Read this book. Like, now. Like, really. It was amazing. You are gonna love it, I promise!

A fantastic Young Adult paranormal thriller that sends Goosebumps down your spine, as you are thrust into a world of living dead!!
This outstanding book is the most exciting read that I have encountered this year, which with its own originality and distinctiveness it takes this genre to new heights. I am so impressed by Rusty Fischer, who’s accomplished and wonderfully descriptive writing really captured my imagination, taking it on the most electrifying ride that was both atmospheric and spine-chillingly brilliant. The Zombies were no reflection on those in Michael Jackson’s thriller, as totally juxtaposing the wooden, white-faced stereotype they were flesh-eating, frightening nightmares that made me jump in my seat and really become absorbed within the thrilling tale. Maddy is a spectacular character whom I connected to instantly, whose teenage high school happenings with chummy friends, the segregated groups of kids in class and the crushes on hot teenage boys all brought back a sense of nostalgia for me, hence I think many readers of this genre & age group will love the realistic study of her life. Then unexpectedly there is such a shocking twist in the tale as she turns into a Zombie that as everything changes, the pace quickens, your heart beats faster and the storyline becomes even more dramatic and exciting. The gripping and absorbing storyline increases in intensity as Maddy has to cope with being a ‘living dead’ and the implications that are so brutal, such as deciding what really matters most to her that may just become the toughest decision of them all.
With Maddy’s life turned upside down in a flash of lightning, she has to cope with the new diet of brains (yuck!) and most shocking of all that her two high school friends Chloe and Dane are also Zombies too. The great counsel of Zombie Elders are in the midst of planning the great battle against the Zerkers (untamed & uncontrollable Zombies), and so Maddy thrown into an utter whirlwind has to divulge this remarkable truth and keep it hidden for all time. Zombie’s may not cry nor do they have a heart that beats, but those deep-seated emotions within all of us eat away at her very core until all becomes unbearable. Her choice and outcome is connected to that strongest and most remarkable emotion called love, which constantly shapes and defines our future and which ultimately will do with Maddy in her quest to seek out her inner self…
This story is an utterly compelling, forceful and powerful read where much dwells beneath the surface as you unveil more hidden within these pages. Electrifying, intense and thrilling this creepy horror story has all the criteria for a spectacular work of fiction; from character-driven narrative to detailed & complex plot with many twists and turns that keep the reader glued to the page. If I could rate this book higher than a 5* I would, for I am so overwhelmed and envisage great things to come from an astonishing author whose work has blown me away!!

Recensione: Questo è uno di quei libri talmente imbarazzanti da farti urlare "perché ho gli occhi?". Davvero, se non avessi esaurito da tempo le mie lacrime su libri altrettanto penosi, a questo punto starei piangendo sangue.
"Gli zombi non piagono" è però anche il paraGNormal romance che aspettavo da tempo: quello che dopo i vampiri, dopo gli angeli, dopo i demoni, dopo le puzzole... sì vabbé avete capito. Quello che avrebbe coinvolto gli zombie. Zombie adolescenti, per essere precisi.
Perché si sa, qualcuno in alto deve aver deciso che gli Young Adult sono libri per decerebrati, dunque costringe qualcun altro di più basso nella catena alimentare editoriale per a cercare rare perle di schifezza come questo libro, importarlo in Italia, tradurlo e dirci che è una figata. NO. Io mi sento offesa da tutto questo.
Ma parliamo della storia: Maddy è una normalissima adolescente come tante, grazie a Cthulhu non è bella/perfetta/meravigliosa, ma è anche la classica ragazza tranquilla che ha un'amica un po' cafona e che la comanda a bacchetta (sembra la mia adolescenza, GRAZIE TANTO LIBRO). Sta di fatto che sono morte ben due compagne di classe a poche settimana di distanza l'una dall'altra e tutto questo genera un po' di superstizione nella scuola.
Allora Maddy, che frequenta la classe di economia domestica, tra un pasticcino e l'altro si accorge che Dalhia e Scheletro, altri due compagni di classe, non sono esattamente così normali. Ma dopo tutto cosa c'è di normale in una come Maddy, che va a disegnare le lapidi a carboncino al cimitero?
Poi DUN DUN DUNNNN: momento topico. Maddy diventa una Mary Sue. Infatti entra in scena Stamp (che io continuavo a chiamare Stampella, ma ok) , giovane, bello, aitante, dolce, con un tirabaci alla Superman e kicker della squadra di football. Uno che non dispiacerebbe nemmeno a me, per dire, ma NO, lui prende una bella sprangata per Maddy. Ridicolmente Stamp è un bel personaggio, confesso che non mi è dispiaciuto ed è l'unico che ha attirato le mie simpatie, anche perché un ragazzo del genere non esiste. Un po' come Christian Grey, ma meglio. E poi ha il tirabaci nghhhh.
Vabbé, saltiamo tutta la scena in cui CASUALMENTE Stamp e Maddy si incontrano sotto casa e lui la invita a una serata... passiamo a dopo, quando lei cerca di raggiungerlo sotto una pioggia torrenziale, un fulmine la becca in pieno, lei ci rimane secca e dopo qualche ora... si risveglia zombie.
Avete letto bene: la scusa allo zombismo di questo libro è l'elettricitù, che poi finisce in una guerra di taser tra zombie buoni e zombie kattivissimi, gli Zerker, ovvero Dalhia e Scheletro.
C'è la storia d'amore? Ovviamente sì, poteva mancare? Ma è addirittura un triangolo siore e siori, Maddy infatti non saprà accontentarsi solo del buon Stamp, ma si terrà pure Dane, l'aitante zombie aka ragazzo più figo della scuola che l'aiuterà a fare fuori i kattivi.
Ora, credo di aver detto tutto e riassumo con: che schifo.

Non ho letto tantissimo sugli zombie, solo Warm bodies, quindi quando ho preso in mano, la versione ebook di "gli zombi non piangono", non sapevo cosa aspettarmi.
Avevo letto tantissime recensioni, a proposito di questo libro, tutte o quasi, positive. Quindi ho iniziato questa storia con grande curiosità e aspettative.
Maddy è una ragazza normalissima, che frequenta il liceo, forseun pò imbranata, e che si è presa una cotta per Stamp il nuovo arrivato.
Finalmente Stamp, la invita ad una festa, ma non arriverà mai.
Durante il tragitto infatti, la ragazza viene colpita da un fulmine in testa. Si risveglia qualche minuto dopo, tutta frastornata, ma capisce che qualcosa non va, infatti il suo cuore non batte più, non respira più, ed ha un enorme e fumante buco in testa.
In seguito, dopo una ricerca su internet e dopo una chiacchierata con i suoi compagni di scuola Dane e Chloe (anche loro morti-viventi), scopre di essere diventata uno zombie.
I suoi due nuovi e inaspettati amici, cercheranno di farle capire la sua nuova posizione da zombie. Ci sono regole da seguire, una specie di giuramento da fare davanti a degli anziani zombie. SE non rispettarà queste regole saranno guai.
Una di queste regole è quella di non frequentare i Normali, quindi niente più Stamp, Maddy si era già fatta un filmino mentale. Ma cerca in tutti i modi di rispettare queste nuove regole. Infatti rifiuta l'invito per il ballo scolastico di Stamp.
Ma questi non sono i suoi problemi più gravi, ma deve affrontare due Zerker, una copia cattiva degli zombie, che la stanno perseguitando e stanno spargendo il terrore nel tranquillo liceo. Quindi Maddy, cerca di condurre una vita più o meno normale, e cercando di evitare i due Zerker. Ma purtroppo le cose non vanno cosi.
Devo dire che mi ha colpito particolarmente, le mie aspettative non sono state deluse, prima di tutto perchè è molto autoiroico, in certi momenti stavo proprio ridendo di gusto, e non mi capita spesso di ridere per qualche battuta di un libro. Mi sono piaciute tutte le descrizioni degli zombie, delle leggi sugli zombie ecc.., e come viene narrata tutta la storia, uno stile di scrittura fresco e semplice, mai noioso o pesante.
Il personaggio che ho odiato di più in questa storia è "l'amica del cuore della protagonista Hazel. Per avere amiche cosi, preferisco stare sola, un egoista, il mondo girava sempre è solo intorno a lei, la povera Maddy sempre da parte. Ma io l'avrei mandata a quel paese molti anni prima. Ma Maddy è stata troppo buona. In certi momenti avevo voglio di uccidere quel personaggio, quando parlava o sentivo parlare di lei, mi montava una rabbia furibonda.
L'unica cosa che non mi è piaciuto di questo libro, è il triangolo della fine, l'avrei tolto, io ho sempre preferito Dane.
Vediamo come si risolve la faccenda nel continuo..spero bene per il mio Dane.
Consigliato a tutti gli amanti degli zombie, ma anche a quelle persone che cercano una lettura spensierata.

I had wanted to read this book for so long, since the author did a guest post on my old blog a long time ago. I love zombie books and this one sounded really different. At the time though, this wasn’t being published in the UK so I’ve had a really long wait for this one.
Zombies Don’t Cry is told from main character Maddy’s point of view, beginning with a short chapter which is set after the events which happen in the rest of the book. Maddie is your average teenage girl trying to get through high school. She doesn’t have many friends and just goes through one day at a time. Her personality and character come through well and her voice is a strong one… one that I liked very much. She’s quite ok not having many friends but she relies on best friend Hazel a fair bit.
Something strange is going on at Maddy’s school and a few girls have mysteriously died. Considering what a small town they live in, it makes people think that something very strange is going on. Also, all of the girls are in one of the same classes at school… the very same class that Maddy and Hazel are in. It doesn’t take long for Maddy to become a zombie and although the other girls did not turn out the same way, she joins them in being dead.
I really liked the way in which Maddy became a zombie. It was original and different and something that I had never read about before. There are apparently two different ways to become a zombie and one way makes you a normal zombie (well, normal according to the author) and then the other way makes you a bad zombie. The bad zombies in this book were very predictable from early on and I wish there had been some more mystery surrounding this aspect. I loved the whole way that Maddy realised what she was and what she had to do to survive. All in all, the zombie aspect of this book was very inventive.
Zombies Don’t Cry has quite a lot of action between the good and bad zombies and this was something that I really enjoyed about this book. Not only was there some new ideas about zombies but there was also a great rivalry going on. The actual ins and outs of being a zombie take up a fair amount of the plot so the action and planning of said action broke this up a little bit. I also liked how there was a small amount of romance in the book. The romance didn’t overpower the plot nor was everything reliant on the love interests involved which was a nice touch.
Although I did like this book, I found myself getting annoyed with a couple of characters at numerous points in the book and I wish the characters had been more likeable. Regardless of this, I enjoyed reading Zombies Don’t Cry and will be looking forward to a sequel.

This ended up a fabulous read. The characters were great, the writing was awesome and the story line was intriguing. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. I'm not a huge zombie fan, but it's mostly just because of the ideas of zombies. I haven't read many zombie books and I've actually enjoyed all that I have. So far.
I thought this was going to be a sort of ridiculous funny. And it was. But it got pretty serious, far more serious then I ever expected. It all worked together, but it wasn't what I would guess would work so I kept being surprised.
I liked the main character, Maddy, and I liked all the side characters as well. I never knew where things were going with them and they all kept you on your toes. You didn't always know who was good, and sometimes they changed so I was constantly guessing. Were they really bad? Or were they still good? It was surprising some of the places the author took the characters.
The romance never really had a chance to get off the ground. Maddy was busy learning about being a zombie and all the rules that go with it. While also trying to keep herself 'alive', or at least not dead dead or a bad zombie (yes, there are good zombies and bad zombies). I look forward to seeing where the romance goes in the next one (that hasn't been wrote yet but he's now thinking on writing one). It definitely left off like there's more to come, though it wasn't a cliffhanger.
I really liked the tone that Rusty set with this book. It really felt different and was very well done. I really felt like the voices seemed authentic, and for an adult male writing the story~ well, he did an AMAZING job writing a teenage girl! I really never would have guessed.
I'm anxious to read more from Rusty Fischer and see where he takes things with Maddy in the next book. I really think everyone will surprised how this book goes. From the ridiculous (in a good way) funny to very serious. The twists and turns thrown in the path that you may not see coming. Anyway, give it a try!

"Gli zombi non piangono" è il primo volume di una duologia dedicata agli zombi scritta da Rusty Fisher.
Questo è il mio primo libro sugli zombi quindi ero abbastanza curiosa di leggere questo libro con una creatura paranormale di cui non ho mai letto niente.
Eppure dal titolo, dalla trama e dalla copertina non avevo capito che era così divertente!
Mi è piaciuto molto il prologo. E' da lì che mi sono incuriosita continuandolo a leggere.
La storia narra di questa ragazza, Maddy, un pò sfigata che, dopo essere sgattaiolata fuori casa per andare ad una festa a cui era stata invitata da Stamp, il ragazzo fico con il ricciolo alla Superman, viene colpita da un fulmine e si risveglia viva. O, no scusate, morta, con un bel buco nella testa.Dopo una breve ricerca su Google e aver fatto un test chiamato "Sei uno zombi se..." scopre di essere una di quelle creature con la pelle bianca, gli enormi cerchi intorno a gli occhi, senza battito cardiaco e respiro.
E scopre di avere fame: di cervello!
Maddy, è una ragazza dalla battutta pronta con un simpatico hobby: quello di "sfregare" le lapidi... cosa alquanto strana!
Passiamo allo svolgimento della storia: Maddy scopre che le tre ragazze morte nella sua classe di economia domestica sono state uccise dagli Zerker, i nemici degli zombi, quelli che vogliono sempre e solo il cervello.
Il libro sicuramente è molto simpatico e carino ma ha sempre i suoi piccoli difettucci.
L'unica pecca è stata quella di inserire un triangolo amoroso proprio alla fine del libro, che mi è risultato un pochino frettoloso, ma mi ha lasciato comunque la curiosità quindi sono sicura che leggerò il secondo.
Comunque l'autore scrive in modo semplice e senza fronzoli cosa che ha reso il romanzo scorrevole.
In conclusione, il libro non ha deluso le mie aspettative ed è stata una lettura leggera e piacevole consigliata per passare la notte di Halloween in compagnia di zombi affamati!
"Gli zombi non piangono" è il primo volume di una duologia dedicata agli zombi scritta da Rusty Fisher.
Questo è il mio primo libro sugli zombi quindi ero abbastanza curiosa di leggere questo libro con una creatura paranormale di cui non ho mai letto niente.
Eppure dal titolo, dalla trama e dalla copertina non avevo capito che era così divertente!
Mi è piaciuto molto il prologo. E' da lì che mi sono incuriosita continuandolo a leggere.
La storia narra di questa ragazza, Maddy, un pò sfigata che, dopo essere sgattaiolata fuori casa per andare ad una festa a cui era stata invitata da Stamp, il ragazzo fico con il ricciolo alla Superman, viene colpita da un fulmine e si risveglia viva. O, no scusate, morta, con un bel buco nella testa.Dopo una breve ricerca su Google e aver fatto un test chiamato "Sei uno zombi se..." scopre di essere una di quelle creature con la pelle bianca, gli enormi cerchi intorno a gli occhi, senza battito cardiaco e respiro.
E scopre di avere fame: di cervello!
Maddy, è una ragazza dalla battutta pronta con un simpatico hobby: quello di "sfregare" le lapidi... cosa alquanto strana!
Passiamo allo svolgimento della storia: Maddy scopre che le tre ragazze morte nella sua classe di economia domestica sono state uccise dagli Zerker, i nemici degli zombi, quelli che vogliono sempre e solo il cervello.
Il libro sicuramente è molto simpatico e carino ma ha sempre i suoi piccoli difettucci.

Rusty has presented us with a real 'stiff' of a story, creating a tale in which you aren't sure if you should laugh uncontrollably or take pity on the main character. You have good humor and seriousness combined. Putting that combination into one book isn't easy. Rusty has came out with remarkable talent and left me wanting to read more of his work!
Maddy is just like you and me. Normal. Yet, in her Home Ec class people seem to be dying. Quite weird. Maddy's best friend Hazel thinks it's cursed. Why else would people keep dying in only that class?
As Maddy rushes out one day she accidentally bumps into the new guy Stamp. Nobody ever notices Maddy. They always notice Hazel, yet he does. Later, as Maddy is running she ends up slamming straight into guess who? Stamp! Yes again! He ends up asking her out to a party where she just can't wait to see him! This never happens to her!
As Maddy is creeping down the road heading for the party to meet Stamp, it's beginning to rain and out of nowhere, WHAM! Lights out, on the ground, she is confused. Is the party not going on? There are no lights on at the house. Suddenly she realizes it's way later, hours later than it was just a couple minutes ago. And, to top it all off, the is a spot on her head. She realizes she was hit by lightning. How could this have happened? Agh! Now the only thing left to do is go back home.
Once there, She realizes things just aren't right. She gets on the computer and starts searching for the fact that she feels like she's really cold, no heartbeat, why she can hold her breath for like...however long she wants. She's also feeling stiff.
The answer: She must eat brains.
Why: She is more than likely a zombie.

Wow! I. Love. This. Book. You need to drop everything and read it right now! Fischer is a very talented writer and I loved his zombie explanations! He’s taken this genre and really made it come alive (no pun intended). Most zombie books are about killing off zombies, but Fischer has created a novel in which the reader obtains an up front view of what it is like to be a zombie, and this was a very refreshing look at such a popular genre!
I feel like in movies, and books, we never really get the token “bad guy’s” side of the story; he’s/she’s just an evil character, and traditionally, that’s what zombies have always been: evil. However, Fischer has created a novel in which not all zombies are bad—there are two types: Zombies (good) and Zerkers (bad). I loved it! The fact that zombies have conscious thought is really original, and I enjoyed Maddy’s point of view and her sense of humor throughout the novel. Although she has to deal with many changes, such as becoming a zombie, finding makeup and a new look to go with her sunken in eyes and sickly looking skin, covering a hole in her head, and avoiding the Zerkers that want to eat her brains, she remains as positive as possible and even jokes about her situation. I loved Maddy’s outlook on her “new” life, which caused much snorting on my part as I read. Fischer has a wonderful sense of humor that aides his enticing plotline, and this book was, overall, just a fabulous read!

My Review:
ZOMBIES DON'T CRY was the first zombie novel that I have ever read. Yes, I did just say that. Honestly, the thought of zombies kind of creep me out. They're not pretty undead like vampires, and they don't have hot looking abs like shapeshifters. They are not heroes to me. They are the things that you kill. At least, that's what I thought until I read this book. Rusty Fischer made me like zombies, because his have heart and humor, and most of all, they don't eat brains. Well, they do, but not straight from a human head.
Maddy is a great heroine. Though she's more of an outcast than class president, Fischer has given her a sassy attitude, and a great sense of humor. She's smack-dab in the middle of hero and anti-hero, which made her all the more endearing to me. She felt like a real person, and Fischer didn't allow her character to fall into the category of cliche.
ZOMBIES DON'T CRY proposes a whole new outlook on zombies, the way that they are made, and gives the reader a plausible explanation for why some are like Maddy, and others become Zerkers. I had a great time reading this book, and I have to thank Fischer for opening my mind to reading more zombie novels.

Dopo averlo adocchiato in libreria i miei amici hanno pensato bene di regalarmi questo libro.
Sinceramente mi aspettavo che facesse più ridere. Non che la storia sia brutta, sia chiaro, solo che mi aspettavo qualcosa di un po' diverso. :/
Maddy fa abbastanza ridere, ma non mi sono affezionata più di tanto a lei. Mi dispiace per lo Stampo (come chiamo io Stamp), ma preferisco di gran lunga Dane. Hazel non la sopporto proprio e alla fine mi è dispiaciuto per Chloe.

The cover is totally...well, not right. The cover makes it seem so serious and dark and Twilightly, the book is so NOT. It was hilarious. I'm pretty sure that if I wasn't in school while I was reading this, that I would have literally been on the ground rolling around and laughing.

Hands down this was the best zombie book ever. There was never a dull moment, and it even had be laugh a couple of times. I hope to see a sequel!

Hanno regole,un consiglio degli Anziani,leggi severe,Sentinelle , la Guida alla cura e al nutrimento degli zombi(24esima edizione),e un assurdo sito internet(www.seiunozombise.blogspot.com) dove la protagonista si cimenta in un test per scoprire in cosa si è trasformata e scopre che deve mangiare un cervello entro 48 ore se non vuole morire. La storia è incentrata interamente sulla figura di Madison Emily Swift,la figlia del medico legale. Una ragazza con uno stile dimesso,a cui piace stare sullo sfondo,ascoltare ed ha una passione alquanto strana: riprodurre le scritte sulle lapidi(adora passare ore nei cimiteri). La sua è una vita ordinaria. Ha una migliore amica,Hazel,che è l’opposto di lei:capo cheerleader,guida scout,capoclasse,ama parlare,detesta essere ignorata e secondo Maddy va presa a piccole dosi. La scuola che frequentano è la Barracuda Bay,un ricettacolo di ragazzi di ogni specie fra cui spiccano per inquietudine Scheletro(chiamato così per la sua faccia scheletrica),un tizio enorme vestito sempre con una tuta da ginnastica bianca e la sua ragazza Dahlia Caruthers ,entrambi con gli occhi gialli. Gli ultimi mesi hanno visto la scomparsa di tre giovani ragazze tutte frequentanti l’ora di economia domestica della Haskins. Ciò ha creato un allarmismo generale. In questa difficile situazione Maddy fa la conoscenza,o meglio,si scontra con Crosby Stamp,un giovane appena trasferito dal Wisconsin carino,timido e kicker del Barracuda Bay. Si prende subito una cotta per lui. Ed è proprio Stamp ad invitarla ad una festa . Per recarsi lì Madison viene colpita da un fulmine e si risveglia come zombi. Il suo mondo viene letteralmente stravolto e dopo aver fatto un test al computer sa che deve procurarsi un cervello. Al supermercato incontra due compagni di scuola Dane Fields (che le è sempre piaciuto) e Chloe Kildare. Sono anche loro zombi e cominceranno ad istruirla su come condurre un’esistenza normale. La condurranno alla Cerimonia di Assimilazione dei Neorisvegliati in cui Madison scoprirà l’esistenza degli Zerker,la feccia degli zombi,creature che non solo non hanno coscienza ma sono anche estremamente forti e amano uccidere. Scheletro e Dahlia appartengono a questa categoria e vogliono portarla dalla loto parte. La vita per Madison diventa complicata. La normalità non è più di questa terra e gli scontri diventano all’ordine del giorno. Umani vengono rapidamente trasformati come un’epidemia e siamo già al finale,alquanto rocambolesco, con una battaglia all’ultimo sangue che vede numerose perdite e nuovi affiliati.Un piccolo triangolo amoroso lascia la porta aperta al seguito di prossima pubblicazione Zombies don’t forgive.Al di là dell’atmosfera grottesca , questo un romanzo unisce azione,ironia e un pizzico di romance. Il tutto sapientemente mescolato per creare una storia divertente e al tempo stesso intrigante. Godibile in poche ore di lettura,cattura l’attenzione e tiene incollati fino all’ultima pagina. Il punto forte è senz’altro la figura di Madison che con il suo sarcasmo,il suo non prendersi sul serio, riesce a mitigare la drammaticità delle situazioni che si presentano di volta in volta. Lo stile dell’autore è leggero,scorrevole,privo di artifici letterari . Rusty Fischer è bravo a creare un ritmo serrato fino all’ultima riga e a spingere il lettore a divorare letteralmente la sua opera. Tuttavia è facile notare anche qualche imprecisione(Hazel che dice di essere vegana e mangia gelato,una trasformazione in zombi buono ma fatta col sistema sbagliato) e pur con dispiacere devo ammettere che, a tratti, ho rilevato una leggera confusione. I tempi di svolgimento sono troppo rapidi così come la bizzarra accettazione della condizione di zombi. Probabilmente sarebbe stato necessario più spazio per creare un contesto più razionale,più credibile. Il tono dell’intera storia è colloquiale,scritto in prima persona. Ho avuto l’impressione di trovarmi tra le mani una sorta di diario. Ho apprezzato molto il modo in cui l’autore ha affrontato il lato romantico. C’è sì il classico batticuore del primo amore, c’è la triste realtà di una condizione di incompatibilità fra umano e zombi,ma il tutto sempre sapientemente gestito con ironia.La cover è originale e colorata,si discosta leggermente da quella americana che a mio avviso risulta meno ricca ed elaborata. “Trovi tutto qui dentro” mi spiega Dane facendo scivolare sul tavolo il libro verde. Do una rapida occhiata al titolo: Guida alla cura e al nutrimento degli zombie, 24esima edizione.
Grandioso. I compiti per casa non mancano mai, nemmeno se sei uno zombie.
Madison Emily Swift, Maddy, è un’adolescente normale, con una vita normale, con una sfiga che si aggira nella normalità e con un hobby non del tutto normale: ricalcare le lapidi delle tombe non si annovera di certo tra gli hobby più comuni.
Al liceo cerca di dare all’occhio il meno possibile questo fino all’arrivo a scuola di “quel figo del nuovo arrivato”: “longilineo, con i muscoli tesi come se stesse per balzare addosso a qualcosa – o a qualcuno -, pelle liscia e chiara, tirata come il marmo…” Stamp Crosby
E sembrerebbe che Stamp sia proprio attratto da Maddy tanto da invitarla ad una festa a casa di un compagno di scuola.
Maddy, pur di far colpo su Stamp decide di raggiungerlo alla festa disobbedendo alle poche, ma severe regole impostele dal padre, uscendo di nascosto da casa e… sfidando anche il temporale in arrivo.
Ma Maddy non arriverà mai alla festa…
… sarà proprio il temporale a impedirglielo o meglio, un fulmine che la colpisce in pieno.
Da quel momento in poi la vita di Maddy subisce un drastico cambiamento… “drastico cambiamento” nel vero senso della parola visto che si ritrova fredda, con un buco nello scalpo, senza respiro e senza battito cardiaco.

È stato durante la scorsa primavera la prima volta che sentii parlare di questo romanzo, e nel momento in cui seppi che la Giunti Y l’avrebbe pubblicato in autunno… be’, conoscendomi, potrete immaginare la mia reazione.
“Gli zombie non piangono” non ha deluso le mie aspettative.
E lasciatemelo dire… FINALMENTE!!!
Finalmente una storia divertente e distensiva – nonostante gli zombie – come non ne leggevo da parecchio tempo.
Rusty Fisher ha dato anche lui la sua impronta a questi mostri claudicanti e “tarantolati” mostrandoci la sua visione sugli zombie: per Fisher esistono due categorie di zombie…
- Gli Zombie… esseri senzienti in tutto e per tutto simili agli esseri umani, divenuti tali a seguito di una scossa di migliaia di volt.
Che siano fulmini, taser, corrente elettrica non ha nessun importanza… ZZZ, SCOSSA… ed eccoti creato uno zombie.
Ok… non proprio in tutto e per tutto simili agli esseri umani: gli Zombie, è vero non hanno battito cardiaco, è vero non respirano, è vero sono quasi indistruttibili, è vero hanno un colorito al quanto cadaverico, è vero non sono più agili e scattanti nei movimenti, è vero hanno una dieta basata sull’ingerenza di sostanze eccitanti, quali caffeina e quant’altro, e di cervelli – vanno bene anche quelli che si trovano al supermercato -, ed è vero sono tecnicamente… mmm… morti, o meglio, non morti, ma hanno sentimenti, la loro personalità non cambia, continuano ad amare come hanno sempre fatto e si possono anche innamorare, e poco importa se gli Zombie non piangono, anche loro possono soffrire.
- E po ci sono gli Zerker… zombie generati dal morso di un altro Zombie, molto più simili alle creature del signor George A. Romero.
Gli Zerker sono la malvagità allo stato puro, pronti a creare caos e a mangiare cervelli direttamente dalla fonte – meglio se sia ancora scalpitante e urlante. Sono creature che vanno fermate a qualsiasi costo. Neutralizzate all’istante perché capaci di scatenare il caos.
“Gli zombie non piangono” è un libro che si legge facilmente, ben scritto, con un’idea di fondo niente male, una trama accattivante che ti tiene incollato alle pagine regalandoci momenti davvero divertenti e anche truculenti.
E bisogna dar merito a Rusty Fisher di aver saputo dare voce ai pensieri di un’adolescente in maniera impeccabile.
Infatti, sebbene la penna che si cela dietro a “Gli zombie non piangono” appartenga appunto ad un uomo, leggendo la storia narrata in prima persona da una ragazza, Maddy, il lettore dimentica totalmente che dare voce ai pensieri, ai sentimenti di Maddy sia in realtà un uomo.
Cosa non facile…
Raramente uno scrittore riesce alla perfezione in questo.
Scusate se vi sembrerò un tantino sessista: le scrittrici riesco sempre a dare voce ai pensieri dei loro protagonisti sia che siano ragazze, o donne, sia che siano ragazzi, o uomini.
Riescono a entrare nei panni dei loro personaggi, dismettendo i loro e magari sono anche pronte “a cambiare sesso”, se mi lasciate passare il termine.
Per carità esistono le eccezioni, ma sono rare.
Per un uomo, per uno scrittore, secondo me è più difficile dismettere i panni “maschili” per assumere una personalità femminile, vestire i panni di una donna e darle dei pensieri e sentimenti sensati e non contrastanti.
Scusate… ma non è per niente facile mettersi nei panni di una donna se non si è donne.
Ma Fisher riesce a vestire magistralmente, addirittura, i panni di un’adolescente, di una ragazza alla soglia dell’età adulta - con tutti i problemi che essa comporta - con una capacità tale da non far pensare minimante al lettore che dietro a Maddy in realtà ci sia un uomo.
Be’, a parer mio questo fa di lui un bravo scrittore.
Dunque, storia ben narrata, trama coinvolgente e divertente, personaggi azzeccatissimi…
… be’ c’è bisogno che ve lo dica?

RATING: 4.5 Delicious Dane Stars!!
I really enjoyed, ‘Zombies Don’t Cry’. It wasn’t at all what I was expecting. Rusty made me laugh , really ‘feel’ for Maddy his female lead as I watched her life change. I definitely forgot a male author was writing 17 yr old Maddy’s POV. Rusty did that very, very well. I loved watching Maddy change from her ‘Normal’ self to the goth chick.
From the first chapter to the last chapter , Maddy became quite badass on the outside but still had her ‘human’, emotions on the inside. I even felt sad. I felt like I was going through Maddy’s discovery of who she was now, with her. As the reader we were doing it together. Having to hide the truth of what you had become from your friends and family. Not easy.
What’s a girl to do when she’s no longer a ‘Normal’, as she gets yellow teeth, the black rings around the eyes and all the other zombie traits, not to mention the hunger for yummy brains.....you make a Goth fashion statement is what you do. Goths are hot!! Well , Stamp thinks so.
I loved the chapter titles, they were young and fun. A few faves were:

Stamp Crosby : New kid at Barracuda Bay High and the new kicker for the Barracuda Bay Marauders....and hottie.

Paul Delgado aka Scurvy : 28 yr old friend of Maddy and local grave digger.
Hazel : Maddy’s bff.
Maddy’s dad: Works for Cobia County Coroner’s Office.
Dane Fields & Chloe Kildare : Friends of Maddy’s.
Truth be told , I wasn’t a big Zombie fan before, with all the blood and gore you see in the movies. Hubby is. He just loves the British movies like ‘Doghouse’, ‘Shawn Of The Dead’. Yes , I have sat through those movies...lol!, but I tend to make everybody jump as I am very jumpy watching them. I babble all the way through them so I don’t get scared, which can be a tad annoying to my fellow movie watchers. I was converted, kinda, when hubby and I got a date pass, which is incredibly rare, and we went to the movies. I suggested ‘New Moon’, Twilight instalment # 2, he suggested , ‘Zombieland ‘. Rather different ends of the movie spectrum. He won. Once I got through the first 4 minutes of ‘Zombieland’, the biting and gore, it was a very funny movie. Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg’s characters, are, the most hilarious odd couple in the movie.
What I am trying to say, is even if you are not a zombie fan you will really like this book. Rusty has written it very well. Sure there were the scenes with bone crunching, nummy, num, num action ( biting ). The gym scene with the Fall Formal and the bathroom with the girls, I thought were awesome scenes , but..... ( well, I can’t tell you or it would spoil).
I now look at Zombies in a different light. Even though Dane has yellow teeth, etc...he is a beautiful guy in a different way. He is a very caring character. Rusty’s ‘good zombies’ , have feelings. I am Team Dane all the way baby. I loved his character. Sure he looked like a zombie, but he was such a nice guy. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Rusty’s book definitely has heart and soul, the reader feels. I kinda forgot what Dane was. Zombies with feelings...Dane had them and they were hurting...
Hazel, well , hmmmm....she is a kinda selfish character that some of us girls can relate to. They are the bff we have known for years but we put up with their flaws until one day....
Dhalia was well written, Rusty made me loathe her character.
Dane and Stamp ( love Stamps name!! and Scurvy’s) I can see Stamps appeal to the girlie readers, but to me Dane had a deeper soul even though he is technically dead.
The book ended like it could be a one book deal, but, also I saw Rusty had left an opening for a sequel, another story that could be told with action a plenty and the emotional love triangle between Dane , Maddy and Stamp.
I could see this book on lots of school library shelves. It was an original, funny, sad, way to look at a zombie story. Rusty's words really flow well. It's not the cliche story of zombie wants to suck your brains out and eat them, and that's it. It's a story with soul.
I really enjoyed the book. I wanted to know more about that little triangle Maddy has emotionally got herself into....I’m rooting for Dane...who knows maybe there will be a sequel and I will find out...or not???
