E Lily si trova al centro di un intrigo famigliare senza esclusione di colpi. Tanizaki si addentra con indiscutibile maestria nella psicologia femminile, conducendone una finissima indagine accompagnata da ironia e acuto realismo, a conferma delle sue doti indiscutibili di grande narratore.

Jun'ichirō Tanizaki (谷崎 潤一郎) was a Japanese author, and one of the major writers of modern Japanese literature, perhaps the most popular Japanese novelist after Natsume Sōseki.

Some of his works present a rather shocking world of sexuality and destructive erotic obsessions; others, less sensational, subtly portray the dynamics of family life in the context of the rapid changes in 20th-century Japanese society.

Frequently his stories are narrated in the context of a search for cultural identity in which constructions of "the West" and "Japanese tradition" are juxtaposed. The results are complex, ironic, demure, and provocative.

The perks of being the servant of a feline mistress

Every reader who is also a faithful and happy servant of a cat will likely smile a couple of times when reading Junichiro Tanizaki’s A Cat, a Man, and Two Women – in any case, this reader did. Having previously read Tanizaki’s epic magnum opus The Makioka Sisters , his essay on Japanese aesthetics In Praise of Shadows and some of his short stories (The Tattooer, Longing and Other Stories ), I was surprised finding him here in a more light-hearted mood, almost giving in to some farcical fun. Evidently, I couldn’t resist squeezing this in between the other books that I am currently reading, I was lost as soon as I discovered the cat from the title is called Lily – like the stripy ginger cat at home.

Some of the scenes, for instance those in which the man in the title – the somewhat idle and obstinate kitchenware salesman Shōzō– feeds his Lily the mackerels his new wife Fukuko so unwillingly prepared for him – made me chortle. Shōzō obsessively loves his feline mistress Lily, provoking the jealousy of both his subsequent wives. The floor only gets really cooking on the moment Shōzō’s ex-wife, the seamstress Shinako requests Lily to make up for the loss of her husband and her home and to comfort her in her loneliness, while she didn’t even like Lily previously. Because Shōzō swapped Shinako for the far richer Fukuko on the incitement of his scheming mother , Orin, her motives for her request are dubious. Does Shinako ask to have Lily out of revenge, or to try to retrieve her ex-husband? The cat might not be able to bring any of the desired settlements to the various relationships, but her company definitely makes the human trio think, making them discover and face their true feelings. Lily is a mirror, reflecting their feelings of love, tenderness, regret, remorse, and affection.

Written in 1936, this novella – and other Japanese classic fiction, like Soseki’s I Am a Cat from 1905-06 - suggests that the current hype in which cats feature in book titles or on their covers in contemporary Japanese literature (The Cat Who Saved Books, The Guest Cat, If Cats Disappeared from the World...) does not come out of the blue and that it goes back further than Murakami. Cats sell, but in my experience rarely suffice to save a book. Among the feline-focussed books I read, this nonetheless was probably one of the finest ones, not in the least because Tanizaki respects Lily’s feline dignity and steers clear from anthropomorphize it like Colette (Barks and Purrs) or Annie M.G. Schmidt in Poes, poes, poes.

Breezy and bittersweet, hilarious and a perhaps even a tad moving in spurs, I devoured this faster than Lily could eat the mackerels.

Tanizaki uzun süredir değer verdiğim ve eserlerini ilgiyle okuduğum; samimiyetine ve sadeliğine hayran kaldığım; bence janrında ve ülkesi edebiyatında çok özel bir yere sahip yazarlardan. Bu kitabı okurken üzerimden koca bir yükün kalktığını hissettim. Bir buçuk sene kadar evvel, bu eserin İngilizce epubını bulmuş, oradan okuma girişiminde bulunmuştum. Ancak İngilizce, düşünme diliniz değilse, bir edebiyat eserini okumak için çok lezzetli sonuç vermeyebiliyor. Sonrasında da kim bilir ne zaman çevrilir, nasıl okurum diye hayıflanmış, üzülmüştüm. 'Anahtar' ve 'Çılgın Bir İhtiyarın Güncesi' seneler evvel Can Yayınları tarafından yayımlanmıştı. Arkasından da geçtiğimiz sene içinde Esin Esen'in muhteşem emeğiyle 'Nazlı Kar'ı okuma fırsatını bulmuştuk. Ancak içimi, bu büyük yayınevlerinin ticari kaygılarla, yüzlerini diğer Tanizaki eserlerine dönmeyeceklerine dair; tecrübe edilmiş tatsız his kemirip duruyordu. En bilinen eserini okuyayım da Tanizaki ile hesabımı kapatayım mantığı devamlılığı engelliyor. Neyse, demem o ki yaşasın bağımsız Jaguar ve benzeri güzel yayınevleri:)

Kitap 100 sayfalık bir novella. Tanizaki'nin 1936 senesinde yazmış olduğu en mütevazi öykülerinden biri. Bana göre Tanizaki okumaya başlamak içinde biçilmiş kaftan. Yazarın bütün yazınsal külliyatına ışık tutabilecek bir bütünlüğe sahip. Geçmiş ve gelecek bütün dönemlerinin izlerini bulmak mümkün.

İsminin gayet net bir şekilde aktardığı üzere bir kedi, bir adam ve iki kadın üzerinden şekillenen öykü, gündelik hayat içerisinde yanımızdan akıp giden, hep yaşadığımız sıradanlaşmış olaylara; farkındalığı çok daha yüksek bir şekilde bakma fırsatı tanıyor. Hem mizahi hem de gerçek bir denge içerisinde olayları tartıp, bunların hikayesel niteliği üzerinden okuma yaparken; okuma zevki açısından oldukça tatmin edici bir sonuçla karşılaşıyorsunuz. Onun dışında her şey bildiğimiz Tanizaki.

Çeviriye ayrıca değinmek istiyorum: Sinan Ceylan genç bir Japonca çevirmeni olarak çok güzel bir işe imza atmış. Tanizaki'nin diğer kitaplarından alışık olduğumuz diline, burada da bildiğimiz gibi tanıklık edebiliyoruz. Umarım daha çok güzel çevirilerini okuma şansına sahip oluruz. Ellerine, emeğine sağlık.

Aslında puanımı 4 olarak belirlemiştim ama muazzam tasarım, editörlük ve baskı niteliğinden dolayı 5 yapıyorum.

Hayatınızda Japon Edebiyatına bir kapı açın, herkese tavsiye ederim.

This story serves as a perfect example of how people can mistreat each other on a different levels, be it manipulation, adultery or plain ignoring, and be a complete assholes to another human being, but at the same time they can show their soft side and gentle affection to their felines.
I'm sure that many years of relationships with cats and observing them closely (and their humans too, of course) helped Tanizaki to create this little masterpiece. Just read the description of Lily he put in this story!
He was cool before the internet cats were even a thing...


A must-read for every cat lover! Like it or not, you'll recognize yourself.

The book begins with a heartfelt letter. From one woman to another. From the previous wife of one man to his current spouse.

”...There’s just one thing I want from you. And of course by that that I don’t mean I want you to return him to me. No, it’s something much, much more trivial than that. It’s Lily I want. From what Mr Tsukamoto says, he wouldn’t mind giving her to me, but you keep saying no.

Oh, Fukoko, could that be true? Are you actually interfering with the granting of my one and only wish? Please consider, Fukuoka. I gave you the man who meant more to me than life itself! And not only that - I have you everything from that happy household we’d built together as a couple. I didn’t take so much as a broken teacup away with me. I didn’t even get back most of the things I brought with me when I married him! Of course it may be better not to have things around that would bring back memories of the past, but don’t you think you could at least let me have Lily? I won’t make any other unreasonable demands. I’ve put up with everything - I’ve been beaten up, knocked down and trampled on. Considering all I’ve sacrificed, is it too much to ask for one little cat in return? To you it’s just a worthless little animal, but what a consolation it would be to me! ...I don’t want to seem like a cry baby, but without Lily I’m so lonely I can hardly stand it...Why, there’s nobody in this whole world who’ll have anything to do with me now, except for that cat…."

How can it be that a little cat can evoke so much emotion from three adults? The two wives vying for their husband’s attention, which he prefers to lavish on Lily, as she asks for no more of him than to eat all the mackerel which he buys fresh from the seamongers each day, and to have a warm side to sleep next to at night.

Our cast of characters: a man (Shozo), two women (Shinako, the ex-wife and Fukoko, the current wife) and, a cat (Lily). Throw into the mix Mrs. Ishi, the mother in law (Shozo’s mother), and you have a gently, lilting bittersweet story about the pain of life. About missing something you love. And all of the petty jealousies in between.

”Your cat means more to you than I do!”

In fact, Shozo does appear to enjoy the company (and perhaps even love!) Lily more than either of his wives and mother put together. He’s described as being either “spineless” or “easy going”, depending on which of his wives or work colleagues you ask.

Lily is a tortoiseshell. She is ”...of Western breed, with soft, silky fur; a pretty female, unusually elegant in form of features.”

But both Shinako and Fukuoka wear themselves out with their jealousy at how much Shozo adores Lily. Gently feeding her mackerel after mackerel, which has been lovingly marinated in a soy and vinegar sauce.

Such a wonderful love triangle! With Lily sitting firmly at the top. With the irony being that she also showed more devotion, love and understanding than the people in her life.

I’m continually astonished by how Japanese writers seem to have this otherworldliness with their stories. Whether the writers be modern day and contemporary like Murakami and Murata or more traditional such as Tanizaki (this is the first of his books that’s I’ve read). There is a beauty in the way in which they use words. In how they convey feelings. A gamut of emotions with such power, yet the touch is but the flutter of a leaf falling to the ground.

Apparently this book was written way back in 1937, which astonished me. As the story is just so fresh and vibrant.

As an aside, the paperback has a lovely photo of the author on the inside cover, showing a cat scrambling up his shoulder. His very own Lily perhaps?

This is the most utterly charming novella. Completely and utterly delightful, this was the perfect weekend read. Loved 💖🐱

The story revolves around the themes of devotion, desire, obsession and love and focuses on four characters:
The weak-minded Shōzō, who’s obsessed with his cat, Lily.
The strong-willed Shinako, Shōzō’s jilted ex-wife who is determined to have Shōzō back, even if she has to pretend that her one and only wish is to have the bothersome Lily as divorce consolation.
The domineering Fukuko, Shōzō’s current wife who out of her jealousy of Lily would demand Shōzō to get rid of Lily by sending her to stay with Shinako.
And Lily, a spoiled, loved and misunderstood cat.

But if Shōzō sends his beloved Lily away, would he be able to stay away from her?

ne kadar hoş ne kadar zamanının ötesinde bir novella. tanizaki’nin ustalığını diğer kitaplarından da biliyordum ama ailedeki küçük hesapları, japon ataerkil kültürünü, hep çocuk kalmış bir adamı ve yerlerini savunmak zorunda kalan kadınları anlatışı, hele bu kadar ince bir kitapta, muhteşem.

Prior to this read, I had never read a description of a cat fart, and now I have (😮), and so I guess now my life is complete. I’ve read it all… 😐 😉

Such an interesting novella. I liked how a person in the novella would describe for the reader what he or she thought of another person, and then hear the other person’s side of things. Nobody exactly was in the right or the wrong. At the center of it all was Lily the cat. Maybe I liked this story a lot because we had a cat, Dusty, who lived for close to 20 years, and just like Lily she ran away and we had assumed we had lost her forever and then 6 weeks later she showed up hiding underneath our garage…looking in pretty bad shape….we had no idea where she had been but were overjoyed that she came back to us. So when reading about Lily and her habits, I was reminded of our cat Dusty. We named her Dusty because when we got her as a kitten, she had ear mites and we had to put some sort of powder on her and she would shake it off, and there would be a cloud of dust emanating from her. And like Lily, Dusty had a litter of kittens. But unlike the man in this novella, Shozo, and Lily the cat, I never put a mackerel in my mouth and let half of it dangle from my mouth so the cat could come over and start eating the half of the fish that was dangling from my mouth. Eeeeee-ewe….dude, what is your problem?!!!

There were a lot of one-line blurbs from different reviews at the front and back of the book, and I liked one in particular because I agreed with it…it was from the LA Times: “Fascinating, although at times slightly repellent.”

‘A Cat, A Man, and Two Women’ was close to 100 pages. The next two stories that made up the book –‘The Little Kingdom’ (3 stars) and “Professor Rado’ (2 stars) – were each about 30 pages. Those to me were, ‘meh’.

I am rating the novella 4.5 stars (which when rounded up according to my math is 5 stars) and not including the 30-page stories in my rating. They are mere icing on the cake - the standout is ‘A Cat, A Man, and Two Women’.

Tanizaki'nin mükemmel ve sade anlatımına hayran kalmamak elde değil. Bir kedinin üzerinden bir adamın ve iki kadının anlatıldığı harika bir kitap. Olaylar çok sıradan ve anlatım oldukça sade bunun arkasında insanoğlunun garip duygu ve düşünceleri öyle güzel anlatılmış ki..

As the title suggests, this is a short story about a man, his cat Lily and his ex and current wives. The story starts with ex wife Shinako writing a desperate letter to Fukuko (the current wife) for Lily the cat - admitting that she's lonely without anything to love. She states in her letter that Lily was loved by her husband Shozo more than she was, and that if Fukuko keeps Lily the same will happen to her.

With the seed of doubt sown, Lily is sent to live with Shinako, a pawn in their games of love and jealousy. However what no one expects is for Shinako and Lily to bond, and Shinako goes on a journey of forgiveness and self discovery through her new found love of the cat. It's through Lily the cat that we see all the characters true nature, with Shozo only expressing any real emotions when discussing or interacting with the cat. Without her, he'd be the imbecile his mother and new wife think that he is. However, with Lily we see that he actually can care and love deeply.

This was a great short story, that manages to pack quite a lot of emotional depth into a short page count - however it ends incredibly abruptly, and without any real sense of conclusion. I wanted more from these characters I had just got to know.

tanizaki’nin bu uzun oykusunu 2018’de okumus cok sevmistim. simdi @ahtapotokur tanizaki atolyesi icin tekrar okudum, altini cizdigim yerleri yine cok sevdim, aralarina yenilerini ekledim. kisacik bir metne bu kadar yogun iliskiler karakterler sigdirmasi, kedilerle ilgili muhtesem tespitleri, sade ve akici dili, su gibi cevirisiyle bu sefer de cok severek okudum.

sicacik, naif, muthis akici bir kisa roman bir kedi, bir adam, iki kadin. kedi severler icin adeta bir kutsal kitap, kedi sevmeyenler icinse kedileri bolca dusundurecek ve hatta sevdirecek bir uslup. hem oyle zannediyorum ki kitabin asli, hem de cevirisi oldukca tatmin edici. japoncadan ceviri yapmanin zorluklarini bilemem ama cevirilen eserleri okumanin zorlugu asikar. bu yuzden ceviriyi dikkat cekici derecede iyi buldum ve bu incecik kitabi son derece keyif alarak okudum.
duygu olarak da beni, anadilimde yazilmis ayni topraklarda yasamis oldugum yazarlara nispeten cok daha yogun sekilde etkiledi diyebilirim. tanizaki okumaya devam etmek istedigim bir yazar. cok begendim.

Çok sade ve keyifle okunan bir kısa roman. Öyküden çok kediyi tanımlama, kedilerin karakterlerini çözümleme ve kedi sevgisi üzerine düşünceler çok hoş. Daha önce yazarın okuduğum "Naomi" isimli eserinden çok farklı bir uslupla yazılmış. Bir adam ve iki kadını boşverin de Lili için okunur bu kitap.

Shozo é um lorpa. Shozo é um inútil e um preguiçoso que se deixa manipular pela sua mãe, O-Rin, que por sua vez é uma interesseira. A única qualidade redentora que Shozo possui é o amor pela sua gata, Lily, a qual tem mais personalidade que todas as personagens desta história juntas e é alvo de todo o tipo de ciúmes idiotas. É ela a estrela desta novela de Jun’ichiro Tanizaki, mas não chega para a elevar a algo mais do que uma historieta simpática. A literatura japonesa continua a não me entusiasmar.

Öncelikli olarak söylemeliyim ki: bir kedinin insanı olarak bayıldım kitaba.
Lili bir kedi olarak kendisi mükemmel ifade edilmiş, hayatına en az bir kedi almış olanlar ne demek istediğimi çok iyi anlayacaktır.
Diğer taraftan kitabın insanlarının Lili'ye bakış açıları ve davranış biçimleri onların portrelerini çizmek için betimleme yerine kullanılmış; buradan Şozo, Fukuko, Orin ve Şinako'yu tanıyoruz. Ama özellikle Şinako ve Şozo tahlilini(hatta teşhisini) Lili üzerinden tamamlıyoruz.
Tanizaki ile tanışma kitabım olan bu novella bana yazarı tanımaya devam etmem için gereken torku sağladı. 100 sayfada, sade diliyle ve seçtiği bu konuyla beni böylesine etkisi altına alan bu kedi insanı böylelikle kalbimi kazanmıştır.
Kitabın arka kapağında yazar fotoğrafı seçilirken Tanizaki'nin kedisi Mi ile olan fotoğrafı tercih edilmiş ki bu ince fikir için Jaguar ailesine ayrıca teşekkür etmek isterim.

PS: Lili'nin deseni tortoiseshell olarak ifade edilmiş ki en çirkin bulduğum kedi desenidir bu, ancak o kadar özümsedim ki Lili'yi artık tüm tortoiseshell kediler çok daha sempatik.

Bu yazarın okuduğum ilk kitabı gerçekten çok güzeldi. Başka çevrilmiş kitabı varsa okuyacağım ama okumayanlar için spoiler olur mu bilmem ama çevirmen arkadaş kitabı çok kötü çevirmiş. Eline sağlık iyi hoş çevrilmiş ama gayrı vb Türkçe'ye has olmayan çok söz geçiyor içerisinde. Kitap kedileri sevenlerin tam seveceği tarzda bir kitap ve içerideki hikaye çok güzel.

Rather surprisingly I found reading this three-novella book more hilarious than my first attempt, probably due to more time spent freely and reflection applied. One of the reasons is that, I think, I didn't know why I was in a rush while reading and my first review was all I could share with my Goodreads friends; therefore, I decided to reread this trio and hoped to get some ideas that should be different and beneficial to some keen Tanizaki readers.

First, reading his first novella "A Cat, A Man, and Two Women" is great for cat lovers as we can see from various episodes apparently revealing intimate, caring love between a female cat Lily called vs. a man named Shozo till such love is the cause of prior hatred of Shinako (Shozo's ex-wife) and lingering envy of Fukuko (his mistress). So those cat lovers should never miss reading this story since the more we read, the more we love cats, we simply can't help considering keeping one or two at home.

Then, his second one "The Little Kingdom" is concerned with the relationships between Kaijima Shokichi a kind and wise primary school teacher and a new student in his class named Numakura who has shown his leadership that amazes his teacher. This novella should be a required reading for education students and prospective teachers since, psychologically speaking, they can learn something from all characters in the story and apply in their teaching career as professionals; we are sad and hopeless whenever we come across brutality or maltreatment, verbal or physical, toward students/teachers in any class, any level in any country in the world.

Finally, his third one "Professor Rado" deals with a professor (his name being the title) whose annoyingly amusing rubbery dialogue is barely understandable via his interview from the reporter from the A. Journal. Some years later, the reporter casually meets him at a variety show and the professor divulges his preference toward Mayumi, a beautiful revue actress. Eventually, he finds out that the professor gets married, his wife is Mayumi; he is stunned from what he sees and hears.

First Review

Having searched, found out and enjoyed reading his fictions like “Seven Japanese Tales”, “The Reed Cutter and Captain Shigemoto’s Mother”, “The Makioka Sisters” etc., I still long to read all of his published works bought as new or second-hand copies and this is one of those in my unread list. In fact, it is a three-piece collection, that is, “A Cat, A Man, and Two Women” (a novella), “The Little Kingdom” (a story), and “Professor Rado” (a story).

The first novella itself reveals human-cum-feline affections between Shozo and Lily in which there is a struggle regarding the ensuing battles and arguments between his ex-wife (Shinako) and her successor (Fukuko). Then, the second story, I think, should be critically read and probably applied in education because it depicts a student named Numakura Shokichi whose character and thinking have eventually impressed his peers and helped his poor teacher, Kaijima, by his unique ways. Finally, the third story is a bit funny since it is about Professor Rado (similar to the Swiss watch maker) whose curiosity leads him to find his bride, twenty years younger, and a sense of dark/bitter humor at the end.

It is for good reason that the cat is listed first in the title of the main tale in this three-story omnibus by Junichirō Tanizaki, A Cat, a Man, and Two Women, which is, in part, a grown-up version of The Incredible Journey. Lily the feline is the real charmer at the center of a messy human saga of adultery, divorce, family intrigue and vengeance, involving the indolent Shozo (the man), his chastened ex-wife, Shinako, and his young new trophy wife, Fukuko. Lily becomes the object of a custody battle of sorts between Shozo and Shinako, but also the target of scorn in a battle of wills between him and Fukuko and Shozo's Mother, O-rin (in fact, there are three women in the tale). Oblivious but also seemingly tuned in to the human drama going on around her, Lily elicits a wide range of emotions from the humans she touches and sits at the center of a whirlwind of competing human motivations, relating to each other and to her.

In weaving this tale, Tanizaki writes one of the most perceptive and touching stories I've ever read about the relationship between cats and people; his understanding of feline behavior and the interactions among the species is spot-on and beautifully expressed. It's hard to imagine that science knows much more about cat behavior than Tanizaki had observed when he wrote this story way back in 1936.

The balance of the book consists of two shorter pieces, "The Little Kingdom" and "Professor Rado," both dealing with enigmatic males whose mysterious abilities to gain respect and lead opinion draw weaker characters who want to curry favor and better understand that magnetic pull. The first of these two pieces, "...Kingdom" is the better one, providing a taste of Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm and Village of the Damned well before the fact in its tale of a seemingly quiet new student, Numakura, whose penchant for sly power politics and discipline leads to his authoritarian control over his fellow students and, eventually, the adults. The story is chillingly prescient in suggesting the rise of the military dictatorship that would plunge Japan disastrously into World War II. "Professor Rado" I found less interesting, telling the story of a reporter's attempt to get at the secret life of a tight-lipped professor of some renown.

My four-star rating is primarily for the title story, though the other two also are worth your attention.

Hahahaha o kadar komik ve sinsi bir hikaye ki... Bu kedi olayının karı-kocanın arasına gerçekten girmesi için minicik bir nifak tohumunun yetmesine bayıldım. Firdevs Yöreoğlu kılıklı kaynananın haksız yere yıktığı yuvanın altında kalması, adamın pinpon topu gibi kadınlar arasında madara olması filan müthiş eğlenceli.

Inside out'un kapanışındaki kedili sahnede mükemmel ifade edildiği üzere, davranış ve tepkileriyle kediler anlaşılması zor varlıklar.

Kedi yetmezmiş gibi 2 de kadın var.

Haliyle anlaşılması zor bir eser izlenimi veriyor. Ne var ki, yazar sade bir üslupla anneye anlatır gibi kedi ve kadınların davranış ve tepkilerini bir bir anlatıyor.

Bu noktada ben bir erkek olarak, kendimi geri zekalı gibi hissettim. Bu da elbet doğal ve istemsiz olarak kitabı tek erkek (ve gerizekalı) Şozo üzerinden takip ettiğimden olsa gerek.

Ha ne sonuca vardınız deseniz bir sonuca da varamadım. Kitap da tam bir sonuca varmıyor kanımca. Şozo'nun bir yere varması zaten güç görünüyor. Kedinin yerine örneğin bir bebek koysan her şey olabildiğince basitleşiyor ama kedi girince sıkıntı, kedi girince güzel.

İlginç bir kitap bu. Modern yazım teknikleri kursunda alın size 1 kedi, 1 adam, 2 kadın; bunları kullanarak bir hikaye yazın tarzı gibi bir yandan, bir yandan da değil çünkü iğreti durmuyor hikaye, kurgu, anlatım. Bilemiyorum.

Genel olarak güzel bulduğum çeviri ve arka kapak hakkında bazı gereksiz notlar:

* Tanıtım yazısında Şinako'nun "kırık bir çanak" dahi almadığı söyleniyor oysa ki Şinako sayfa 8'de yer alan mektubunda "kırık bir çanak" aldığını ifade ediyor.

* Sayfa 56'da sonraki baskıda kolayca düzeltilebilecek sıkıntılı bir cümle var; " Belki de Lili yüzünden ihmal ettiği dikişlerini yetiştirmek için gereğinden fazla çalışıyor olması mıydı bunun nedeni?"

* Sayfa 51'de "kapak olsun" geçiyor, güzelce ilişmemiş o ifade sanki.

İlk Tanizaki okumam. Kitaba bayıldım diyebilirim. İkinci evliliğini yapan Şozo, beklenmedik anda eski karısı Şinako’dan bir mektup alır ve birlikte büyüttükleri kediyi geri ister. Şozo kediyi deliler gibi sevmektedir ve yeni karısı kediyi vermesi konusunda ısrarcı davranmaktadır. Aslında bir taraf için umut, bir taraf için de endişe verici bir olaydır. Sonuçta biten bir ilişki vardır.

Zarif bir üslupla yazılmış, kısa ama kalbe uzun dokunan müthiş bir kitap. Diğer kitaplarını sabırsızlıkla okuma isteği uyandırdı.

İncelemeye başlamadan size bir soru sormak istiyorum: Aramızda hiç hayvan sahiplenen bir arkadaşımız var mı? Kedi, köpek, kuş, balık hiç fark etmiyor. Bugüne kadar hayvanlara karşı olan düşüncelerimizi hiç konuşmadık. Bugüne kadar hayvanlarla ilgili kitaplar hep dikkatimi çekmiştir. Hayvan Çiftliği, Bir Köpeğin Araştırmaları ve Kuzgun kitabı bu konuda okuyup sevdiğim kitaplar arasındayken, Bir Kedi, Bir Adam, İki Kadın kitabı da hem içeriğiyle hem de Japon edebiyatının en iyi yazarlarından biri tarafından yazılmış olmasıyla uzun süredir radarıma girmiş olan bir kitaptı.

Eskiden yaşadığım bir mahalle vardı. O mahallede de bu kitaptaki Lili gibi pek çok kedi yaşardı, hâlâ da yaşıyor zaten. Kimseye zararı dokunmayan bu kedilerin üstüne atılan taşları, tekmeleri ve komşularımızın hayvanlara olan bakış açılarını gördükten sonra bu konuda daha fazla düşünmem gerektiğini fark ettim.

İnsan, sadece dünya denen ufacık gezegende bile milyonlarca canlı çeşidi arasında yaşıyor. Ama bütün bu canlılar arasındaki en sabıkalı tür de yine kendisinden başkası değil. Sırf doğadaki diğer türlere tarih boyunca üstünlük kurabildiği için kendisini her şeyi yapabilecek güçte zannediyor. İnsanın kendisi de pek çok yönden hâlâ bir hayvan aslında.

İnsanlar ne zaman kendilerini dünyanın merkezine koydu, işte o zaman işin içine çıkar çatışmaları, arkadan konuşmalar, ikiyüzlülükler ve türlü sahtekarlıklar da girdi. Oysaki bunların hiçbiri hayvanların arasında yok. Biz kendimizi doğadaki en üstün canlı olarak görürken aslında dünyada bizimle beraber yaşayan türlerin hepsini unutuyoruz. İşte bu kitapta da unutulan o canlının adı Lili.

İnsanın benmerkezci yapısı karşımıza bu kitapta da çıkıyor. Şinako, Şozo ve Fukuko üçlüsü arasında mekik dokuyup duruyor kedi Lili. Onların geçimsizliklerini dinliyor. Bazen de çıkar çatışmalarını. Anlam veremiyor kedi haliyle bütün bu olup biten saçmalıklara. Çünkü kedilerin ve hayvanların da duygusal bir dünyası olabileceği kimin aklına gelir, değil mi?

Ne olursa olsun, insan bir şeyin değerini ondan ayrıldıktan sonra anlıyor. Elimizdekilerin değerini onları yitirmeden önce fark edemiyoruz. Pişmanlıklarımızdan bir katalog tasarlıyoruz kendimize. Bile isteye o katalogun sayfalarını çevirip duruyoruz. Düşüncesizliklerimiz o sayfaları dolduran kalemlerimiz oluveriyor birden. İçimizin boşlukları doldu sanırken onların her seferinde daha da genişlemesi ne acı.

Kitabın edebi yönünden pek fazla haz beklememe noktasında da küçük bir uyarıda bulunmak istiyorum. Evet, kitabın anlatmaya çalıştıkları insan ilişkileri ve insan-hayvan etkileşimi konusunda ne kadar başarılı olsa da edebi yönden de bir o kadar zayıf bir kitap bence.

Bakalım insanoğlunun bencilliği onu nereye doğru götürecek? Çünkü bu dünya sadece bize ait değil, kediler de bu dünyanın sahibi!

Bu kadar basit ve sıradan bir dille insan ilişkilerindeki aşırı girintili çıkıntılı duygu hallerini anlatabilmek hayranlık uyandırıcı. Kısacık hikaye boyunca bir adam, bir kedi ve iki kadın arasındaki ilişkilerde herkesin penceresinden bakmanı sağlıyor Tanizaki. O da haklı, o da haklı, o da haklı diye diye ilerliyorsun. En sonda ulaştığın ise aslında haklı olanın sadece tek birşey olduğu: saf, dolaysız, çıkarsız sevgi. O sevgiyi görebilmenin, nefret dediğin hali bile silip süpürebilmesi.

Jaguar Kitap’a methiyeler düzmeyi hiç bırakmayacağım. Hem ülke edebiyatlarından kazıya kazıya “popüler” olanın dışında yazarlar ve eserlerini bulup çıkarması hem de orjinal aslından pürüzsüz çeviriler yapan çevirmenlerle çalışması. Bir de kitabın arka kapağında, Tanizaki’nin kedisiyle olan fotoğrafı nasıl güzel olmuş. Kalp kalp kalp!

Confesso que o que principalmente me atraiu neste livrinho foi o facto de ter um gato na capa. E a gata deste livro é mesmo uma personagem principal e não secundária como se poderia imaginar.
A vida em sociedade, o papel da mulher na vida doméstica, suspeitas, desencantamento, surpresas e muito mais encerram estes pequenos contos de uma grande autor japonês.

Kitabı 1 günden kısa bir sürede okudum, 100 sayfalık bir novella ve çok akıcı. Anlatı, Şozo’nun eski eşi Şinako’nun yeni eşi Fukuko’ya gönderdiği mektupla başlıyor. Mektubunda Şozo’nun en sevdiği varlık olan kedisi Lili’yi istiyor. Şinako hala eski kocasını çok seviyor ve aslında kediden hiç hazzetmediği halde bir umuda tutunmuş olarak Lili’nin onları yeniden birleştireceğine inanıyor. Böylece tüm anlatı boyunca Şozo’yu, annesi Osli’yi, yeni eşi ve kuzeni olan Fukuko’yu, Şinako’yu hatta Lili’yi yavaş yavaş tanıyoruz, ilişkilerine ve kendi iç dünyalarına dahil oluyoruz. Bir Kedi, Bir Adam ve İki Kadın Tanizaki’den okuduğum ilk kitap ve kendisini tanıdığım için çok mutlu oldum. Diğer kitaplarını çok merak ettim. İnsan ilişkilerini ve insanı çok güzel anlatan bir yazar. Sosyal İzolasyonda olduğumuz şu günlerde elim sıkça kütüphanemdeki Jaguar kitaplarına gidiyor, beni her zaman olduğu gibi şimdilerde de fazlaca mutlu ettikleri için ayrıca teşekkür ederim. Ve tabiki Lili ile tanıştırdıkları için de :)
