Yoshihiro Togashi (冨樫義博) is a manga artist. Credited in Chinese translations as Fu Jian Yi Bo.
He began drawing manga at an early age; while he attended college, the publisher Shueisha recognized his talent. Togashi has authored numerous manga series in different genres during the past three decades. He is perhaps best known for writing and illustrating the YuYu Hakusho and Hunter × Hunter series, both of which have been published in the popular Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the author of Sailor Moon.
The pacing is still an issue but at least some interesting things are happening. The best part of this volume was some of the depth and character development shown.
A lot went down simultaneously. I am absolutely in love with this sense of chaos that appears to have permeated the pages all of a sudden. Plans were executed. Things went awry. Doom awaits.
This is the best kind of story. The more you think about it the better it gets. The more you put in, the more you get out.
It's morally complicated. The ants were basically animals at first, but have now developed a sense of humanity. Are they to be held accountable for their ridiculous acts of violence when they were essentially animals and then children? Because Meruem very quickly changed his entire motivation for living to altruism when given the chance to grow. Youpi grew similarly at a very quick rate. Pitou is on his way as well. At this point none of those three want to fight. Gon and Netero are both trying to instigate a battle against an unwilling opponent they haven't fully considered.
Meruem unquestionably did evil things. But he was also a child. It also my hypothesis that his prefrontal cortext was not fully developed, leaving him physically incapable of the kind of higher moral thoughts he is engaging in now (sorry for going into psych; that's my background). His growth truly does resemble the arc of infant to toddler to child to adult. The goal he has arrived at, is a noble one that I want for our world. I'm confident that given the opportunity, Meruem would grow out of his opinion that this should be achieved by intimidation and dominance. He has already grown so quickly and shows interest in growing further. He really did only want to talk to Netero. Whether or not he should live is another matter. But it is safe to say that the ants should not be categorically exterminated. Meleoron, Octopus, Pitou, Youpi, Colt, and Meruem show that they are capable of growing to a level comparable to humans. At worst, what the ants have done is comparable to what humanity has already done done to itself and other animals.
And the thing is, Netero doesn't even want to have this conversation. It was decided for him by some rich oligarch. And he accepted that order without question. It's easy to see how he would be okay with that at first- I was too. But at the very least it is worth considering that his initial assumptions were wrong. And I'm not really sure why he doesn't want to. What is his motivation to go for the kill when he starts to feel like he may have been wrong? Maybe he has too much invested in this or couldn't bear the possibility of having to turn back after coming so far. He says that Meruem is stuck between human and ant and must choose. But that isn't really the pressing matter here. His trajectory has been clear. Meruem has made it clear that he can be talked down from culling the people of Gorteau. He has made it clear that he will put his immense power towards a just cause, and if he can be convinced his genocide isn't the best way to achieve that he will stop. Netero is the one who can't be talked down from his reactionary genocidal war.
Anyway, I gotta give it up for Togashi. This is his version of Alabasta, The Death Star Run, the Eclipse, Mania X7, Avengers 3, the Marineford War. The long-built, early climax that will be a definitive highlight of a given story, but not necessarily the end of it. It's is one that may never be topped in terms of scale or weight. The most experimental these kinds of moments tend to go is having the heroes be curb stomped. But Hunter x Hunter takes this further than anything I've ever seen. The heroes aren't destroyed; they are pursuing a battle their enemies have grown beyond wanting to fight. Our heroes are beating down people who want to repent for their atrocities. Our main character is seriously debating whether an innocent child's life is worth waiting 60 minutes for. All he has to do to ensure that kid lives is not murder somebody. And he had to be stopped from doing that. The villains started out as monsters and become something else. The heroes are complete humans who are descending into monstrosities. Everyone's bodies and spirits are breaking. Nobody will get want they want out of this.
And again, still mostly build-up... but with the way this ended I think the next volume is where things are going to REALLY happen o.O
While most of the smaller battles seemed to be finished in this, and Youpi & Pouf now on their way to assist the King... I'm not sure how exactly things are going to go down in the battle between Netero and Meruem but uhh.... I don't have a good feeling about it 8'D
Ikalgo (the cool octopus) finds himself in an unexpected battle of wits, meanwhile grave sacrifices are made in attempts to keep our hunters alive. This volume ends on a freakishly high note with Morel flipping Knuckle off, and Netero making a surprising deal with the king.
To the finale and the main battle next time The King and Netero!!! they went to a deserted place to fight but the king didn't want to :) he wants to talk!! he didn't react to any of Netero's special attacks talking about he know his purpose in life he will delete borders and defend the weak, spreading equality all over the place but still Netero had no call to let him live so inorder to make him fight he offered to let him know his own name if he managed to end this battle :) After a long fight with Yupi Morau was badly injured and Knucles was defeated but not dead and he know have a change of heart about fighting :/ Gon is still sitting cold with Pitau till she finish her healing and Pufu is standing still with them :) Finally what I was waiting for is here!!! The Finale Battle!!!
Once again, a volume filled with tense moments and fights. Beginning with Killua entering the fight against Yupi, and ending with Yupi and Pouf heading towards Meruem, not many more minutes have gone by in this volume either. Knuckle hit Yupi and regained his pride, only to later on be moved by Yupi's acknowledgement of them, reaching a point where he no longer wanted to fight Yupi. Simultaneously, even though Meruem only wanted to talk, Netero was determined to get him to fight. After all, the king might be willing to let the humans he deems worthy live, but not all of them. With the final battles nearing, I would say about two more volumes of this arc remain, and I do hope they speed up a little.

Netero battles the Chimera Ant King. Menthuthuyoupi has a change of heart versus Morel and Knuckle.
****
It's funny how lazy I got with reviews for this stretch of volumes. It's maybe less funny how I still don't feel like writing about them. My words wouldn't be able to do them justice, I guess?
Anyway, fights:
Last bit of Knuckle versus Youpi Godspeed Killua versus Youpi Ikalgo versus Bloster Morel versus many tiny Poufs Morel and Knuckle versus Youpi The start of Netero versus the King

This entire arc has felt so epic in scale. We've reached a point where all the characters feel like gods fighting for the fate of the world. I've said it already, but I mean it when I say Chimera Ant is something special.
These are some very unorthodox BOSS BATTLES. Where two end, the MAIN EVENT begins! Breakdown:
- The first chunk belongs to Ikalgo, our little octopus buddy, and his bunker chess match with Machine-Gun Shelly. At this point in the story, this plot seems like small beans, but it reveals enough about Ikalgo's character to make it compelling.
- END MINI BOSS BATTLES #1 + #2: If you were going to rate likability of characters in this volume, I would go: +Morel, +Youpi, -Knuckle, -Pouff. Their battles are quite confusing to summarize with all the strategies and characters at play (a Super Saiyan Lightning Killua cameo was the ultimate highlight). The battle is quite fun, though. But the main takeaways are that Pouff is an officious prick, Knuckle is far too emotional, Youpi matured right before our very eyes, and Morel is an absolute boss.
Unfortunately, everybody's plans are going right up the stinker. We seem to be done here.
- MINI BOSS BATTLE #3 INTERMISSION: Meanwhile, Gon, who is, again, our main protagonist, is still a whistling kettle at this point. The scene where Pouff enters the operating room with Gon and Pitou is riveting: While the two ants could immediately squash the boy, all the power belongs to his mercy. Not a sentence you would expect to see 10 volumes ago.
- BEGIN FINAL BOSS BATTLE: The volume ends on a high: Netero, the world's ultimate Nen user, unleashes his justice upon the Chimera Ant King who responds with... words. The dude really is just here to talk.
How many main antagonists do you know who are pacifists and prefer diplomacy while the protagonist demands war? This is a complex position for Netero as he actually sees some humanity in the king. However, he is also very much an ant, so his mere presence is a threat. So with the gloves off, we bid adieu to this volume.
Okay Shaiapouf is a mouthfull so we'll just call him Pouf. Cute, right? And you know what's cuter? When he makes these little clones of himself. I almost died of cuteness overload when I first saw Pouf shatter in these thousand little minions of himself. Aaaahhnfjcnjmcm. That's a snappy trick.
As the battle continued on in several parallel places at once, I could only focus on Knuckle battling Youpi and almost winning with his APR ability. I don't know if I'm glad he turned APR off to save Morel (who I absolutely adore don't get me wrong) or if I think it's the stupidest thing he could have done because now Youpi will go straight to protect the King.
And that brings us to the King who just. Will. Not. Fight. Back. No. Matter. What. President Netero. Says. I really am starting to like King Meruem. That guy has something about him. But then Netero had to go and dangle the knowledge of the King's name in front of him. Now we'll have the one fight I've been dreading and yet waiting for.
I don't know whoooo to roooot for. I can't take this.
P.s. Gon is just an annoying bug at this point and I don't much care for him and his new attitude.
This book is probably my second favorite volume out of the series. We get another view point of a very powerful man that tries to defeat the king. Two very powerful beings fighting against each other with nothing but raw strength and power. I love this book because it is really detailed in what is going on. the fights are really what satisfied me. The back and forth of who is wining or loosing really grabs my attention and is what i like.
I felt a rather overwhelming urge to reread some HxH, I chose this as a start point of the reread. I think the Chimera Ant arc is the highlight of the series thus far for many people for good reason. As much as a decent amount of people dislike the pacing, I think with a Myriad of other strengths, I can’t find much to complain about. So many impactful moments in this volume alone, some fantastic artwork as well.
At this point, why are we even fighting? The King is more than willing to talk it out 🤷♀️ Gon I understand because it's personal but the possibility to simply coexist is there. I guess humans will always be control freaks and it's true that the Ants may snap anytime (aka the usual dilemma in stories like this 😅)
Again, it feels like the choices of some of the individuals in the assault against the Chimera Ants. As they are working to take out the royal guards, Knuckle seems more worried about he honor of the fight more than the actually beating his opponent. It feels off compared to the build up to the overall fighting.
We're finally getting into the King/Netero fight! Thank god, I am not a fan of all the other stuff going on. The whole Knuckle/Morel/Pitou fight was a drag, and Pouf is a drag. But at least we get King and Netero!
This had some really breathtaking artwork in it. The story has me so invested and I'm really just chewing through this series because it's so enjoyable. I wasn't a fan of watching this arc in the anime because it felt so slow but it's so well paced in the manga I thoroughly enjoyed this read
BEAUTIFUL. Youpi is the most annoying royal guard for me but after the change in his state of mind you'll realize his character development is actually the best written among the three. Knuckle annoyed the fuck out of me but he's just way too nice and I know that lmao.
