Charm: An Amazing Story of a Little Black Cat by Leyla Atke is a cute beginner reader book about a little cat that is found and the owner's love for this little kitten. In the back there is picture of the cat too. A cute story with lots of lessons put in without pushing the issues. Great job.

As a cat lover and cat-mom I was thrilled to find this book.

Leyla Atke's autobiographical story about her relationship with a cat appears to tell a simple story but it is really so much more... `Charm: An Amazing Story of a Little Black Cat' demonstrates that we need to be alert for new influences to experience the best in life.

Leyla spots `Charm' the black kitten as she is on her way to the hairdresser. She planned the event well and called the salon so she would not have to wait and lose time. Yet when she sees the black kitten everything changes. Leyla senses that taking in this kitten is more important than her haircut. Since she has another cat at home meeting `Charm' is not about potential new pet ownership. Rather Leyla recognizes instantly that `Charm' is meant to be in her life.

Unfortunately `Charm' leaves Leyla just like he had entered her life - sudden and by his own will. The author's description of the events around Charm's final disappearance is packed with deeper meaning. While readers (especially cat lovers) have to feel sad, that Charm is gone, I think the passage shows how humans/people have to make the best out of their scenarios; we cannot really control everything. Sometimes relationships come and go to prepare us for the future, to help us grow.

In an almost magic way this also happens in Leyla's life. I am not going to give away any spoilers but I will say that much, "Be on alert on September 30"; obviously a lot of things can happen on that date.

Loved the book and tried to read it to my own cats. One of them wanted to listen, the other one is like Charm, she does her own thing.

4 stars - only because the book is short. Expressing my hope that author Leyla Atke will put together a collection of similar stories or expand on the topic by writing fiction books about how and what we can learn from our relationships with animals and pets.

This is a story of the author forming a profound bond with a stranded kitten, whom she named "Charm." All was going well but the cat's natural curiosity took over and he would eagerly explore the neighborhood. One day Charm was clearly missing so the author went looking for him. The cat was nowhere to be found.

What happened next?

Well, you need to read the story. You will discover the author's profound thoughts on life and death, some incredible twists and turns to the story and yes, a happy ending.

The author's writing style is very vivid and she illustrates the facts with great detail. You will feel like you are there with the author, feeling what she's feeling and experiencing what she's experiencing.

“Charm” is a charming story for children and adults alike.

At 40 pages, Charm could be considered a long story or a short book. It’s based on a true story that the author experienced with a cat she discovered in the street and rescued just as it was about to be killed by the traffic. She takes the cat home, cleans it up, takes care of it, and names it Charm. Unfortunately, much later on, Charm gets loose and doesn’t return. The narrator finds his body later on, and figured out he died on September 30, the birthday of the narrator’s brother. Though heartbroken about the death of her pet, a year later, on September 30, she sees that a black kitten is being attacked by dogs in her yard, right where she had buried her previous cat. Again, the narrator rescues the cat, and it looks just like a one-month old version of her original cat. She renames this one Charm as well and takes care of it.

While the story may seem fairly straightforward, there is more to it than the bare plot. The fact that the original cat dies and the new cat is discovered both on the exact date is unusual. The new cat found right at the site of the original cat’s grave is also significant. It makes the reader think about reincarnation. Is the new cat the original one coming back for a second lifetime? Is the narrator getting a second chance to have her original cat back? The multiple interpretations possible at the end reminded me of Ernest Hemingway’s short story, “Cat in the Rain,” where a woman tries to rescue a cat in the rain, but it gets away, then at the very end, the hotel maid brings her a cat, but the reader is unsure whether it is the same one or not. Just like Hemingway’s story, this story can be interpreted in more than one way. While this would be an interesting story for older children, it would also be a good story for a parent to read aloud to a younger child. There are lessons in it that can help some children deal with the death of a pet.

This book has already won well-deserved book awards and I would recommend it too.

I was asked to read this story and found it to be touching, heartfelt with a magical quality.

It is a deceptively simple tale and yet has layers of meaning and deals with issues such as death, love, loss, faith and relationships; especially a close bond with a mysterious cat.

This short story could be helpful for younger children to understand death.

I was lucky enough to get a review copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

Charm, by Leyla Atke, is about a little kitten she finds while she is on a break one day. She worries for its safety and subsequently adopts it. Charm, as he is named, is smart and confident. He likes eating egg yolks and adventuring across the street onto the grounds of the factory. One day, Charm is lost. Eventually the author is blessed when Charm returns to her. Whether you believe his return to be a matter of God or some other mysterious means, the story of Charm is a beautiful tale.

The book is aimed for people of all ages and I imagine that many people will find something enjoyable in this story. Though, there are some portions that might be upsetting or even need to be explained to younger children, such as the death of Charm. I even found it upsetting. That's the magic of the book, actually. It has high points and low points which I think ought to be found inspiring; that if you get through difficult times, you might often find redemption or portions of life which make the struggle worthwhile. I found the book to be almost magical. It's a truly beautiful story of a little cat and its owner with beautiful illustrations as well. Overall, I found it to be a truly pleasing story. I think it's definitely worth five stars. I think I would love to read further stories of Charm's adventures!

A Cat and a Miracle

The narrator of this children's story finds a cat on the street in danger of being killed by passing traffic. She gives it a home and names it Charm. Sadly one day, the cat, gets out of its new home and fails to return. Eventually, Charm’s body is found. With great sadness, the narrator buries the cat in her backyard.

Many people have grieved the death of pets but what makes Atke’s story different is that fate provides the narrator with an opportunity to rescue another cat, one being attacked by dogs in her backyard. The rescue occurs exactly one year to the day that she buried Charm in that same yard.

The reader, adult or child, can’t escape feeling Charm had miraculously come back to life and erased the pain of the preceding year. I wish I had this book when one of my daughter’s lost her much-loved cat in a terrible accident years ago. I’m sure it would have helped her see the finality of her pet's death in somewhat different light, a more hopeful one.

Charm – a Charming Story!

This charming award-winning story of a little black cat named Charm is an actual narrative of how the author “found” Charm (seemingly dropped from the sky) and then “lost” him when he disappeared over a fence into a scrapyard and was eventually found dead. This hauntingly poignant story continues with the author’s remorse and sadness over the loss of her beloved Charm, when she finds another small black kitten – or rather the kitten finds her - on the one year anniversary of Charm’s death. Having the same aura and presence of Charm, could this tiny black kitten be Charm once more? According to the author, “…he still remains a little mystery.” (Leyla Atke grew up in the former Soviet Union and now lives in Denmark. The book has received both an IBA Finalist and a Readers Favorite Finalist Award.)

A charming black cat book

What a charming book about a charming black cat. It’s not only for children, it’s for everyone who likes, no loves cats. I was smiling but I was crying as well, when...well you have to get the book and read it.

When the author found that little bundle of black joy, she was delighted and bonded with him and called him Charm. All went well. The only thing was, cats are natural curious.

From the author: “Charm is full of live, impulsive, curious and aggressive. When Charm is overwhelmed with emotions, he starts talking. Of course in his own language. Loudly and impulsive.

I could go on writing about Charm, but we leave that better to the author and then to the reader to read all about Charm.
Beautiful, love it with nice pictures.

I loved this book! What a cute story about a magical kitten. I enjoyed reading about the black kitten, Charm, and how he was found. I can understand how the owner in the book came to love Charm. I can definitely relate to the kitten becoming family and all that happened in the story. I have several cats and kittens, and there are some special ones...my favorite, a orange striped Speedy quickly stole my heart when he was born in the midst of five others. And I'll always feel a connection to him and his cute little kitten that looks so much like him. I think anyone who loves cats will enjoy this sweet tale. Such adorable illustrations, too. I recommend it. Thanks to the author for the free digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

A Must read for cat lovers. It's a true story of compassion and companionship. Like you love your own child, it is truly possible to love your pet in the same way. I've personally never owned a pet in my life but reading Leyla's feeling, I can totally relate that you do get attached to your pets. Its especially for those who keep cats as pets.

Who can resist a delightful story about cats? Charm (An Amazing Story of a Little Black Cat) written and illustrated by the talented Leyla Atke has it all–it’s a tale about love, loss, and continuing on, despite the pain of the loss that exists when one’s beloved pet dies and leaves an empty, cat-shaped hole in one’s heart. How can such an abyss be filled? And, how did the feelings toward the handsome black cat, which the narrator calls Charm, develop in the first place?

In Charm, the author weaves a story that is, itself, charming. Atke introduces the short but sweet book by reminiscing, in the first chapter, about how Charm came into her life and changed it forever for the better. She has the first-person narrator tell of “a hot summer day in June of 2006″ when she “was leaving work for a break.” The reason she is leaving is “to get a new hairstyle” and she is in a hurry to fit in the hairstyle into her busy day. Such are the times when Fate, or God, enters into our plans and sometimes, if we’re lucky, changes them in ways that we’d never planned, but which bring a touch of happiness to our lives.
At a busy intersection, on the way to her hair appointment, the narrator notices “something small and black” in the middle of the road, among the rushing cars. She notices that it is moving, and she decides to see what it is, so she stops her car and gets out to get a closer look. As she approaches the object, she sees that it is “a small black kitten sitting in the middle of the road.” With the cars “waiting for a green light from both sides,” she realizes that she has the chance to rescue the kitten, and she takes it.

Even then after the narrator saves the kitten, she’s not sure what to do with it, and considers if she should just “leave it in the park” which is nearby. However, struck by how cute and gentle the kitten is, though it is dirty and its fur is “smelling like kerosene” she takes the animal to her aunt’s house. She, like the narrator, has her own cat, but she agrees “to shelter the kitten only until the evening.” That enables the narrator to return to work, think about what has transpired, and make her decision about keeping the kitten.

I don’t want to give anything else away, except to say that she does decide to keep the small black kitten, and to call it Charm. I throughly enjoyed reading Leyla Atke’s book, and her wonderful illustrations help give the reader a genuine feel for how Charm must have looked, and how the kitten managed to, well, charm his way into the narrator’s life.

There is something else I should mention, though, about the book. It is written primarily for young teens on up. What ultimately happens to Charm is sad, and the description of the cat’s body after his demise might be too much for younger readers to handle, though the author is being honest about relating the details. Also, the author writes that “Vaccination and castration” will be musts for a new kitten that enters into her life, who she first sees just “a couple of steps away from Charm’s grave,” and who she also decides to call Charm. These elements don’t at all detract (at least not in my humble opinion) from the appeal of the book; but, I thought I should mention these things, so that if someone decides to buy it for younger kids, they will know that the kids might come to them with some very interesting questions about death and the definition of “castration.”

Charm (An Amazing Story of a Little Black Cat) is a truly charming story about how much a kitten can effect a person’s life and bring joy to it. If you are an animal lover, and perhaps own a cat or have owned them in the past, you’ll definitely want to add this delightful short book to your reading lists. It would also make a great gift for a cat lover in your life. I highly recommend Charm to anyone who has ever owned, or who currently owns, a kitten or a cat.

Charm:An Amazing and sweet curious cat story!

I liked it all, It was quite an amazing cat story and a very touching one at that! I found myself reading it from cover to cover in a one time sitting!
I recommend this ebook for anyone who above all loves to read such short stories about cats or animals of any kind. I wound up buying this myself
after waiting and waiting for the author to get back to me after having asked me if I would enjoy reading such a story as this. She only wanted to give me a PDF copy free but I needed two in case 1)needed to finish reading her book while I was at church waiting for church to begin, see? And 2) The pdf's on my Nook do not always come very readable at times, see? So this is why I had asked her to please send me two free review copies. I still have no idea of why she never answered my replies either on Goodread or by emails as I had given her both of my email addresses so she could take the risk of not being able to get me either the review copies or a reply to me one way or another! It was a great story Leyla! And I am only giving your ebook five stars for such a neat, sweet, and amazing short cat story. The Lord bless you now and help you in whatever it is that you are in need of! By Angela L.

As I read "Charm: An Amazing Story of a Little Black Cat," I was touched by Leyla's love for this little rescued kitten. Leyla told the story of her beloved pet with such compassion, caring, love, and devotion that my heart was truly touched.
I think this story would aid in helping children and adults alike to realize the bond that is exchanged through the love of a pet. I have often wondered if animals that we are kindred spirits with come back to us in the form of another pet. I think they do. I believe that pets often times pick us and present themselves at a time that we need their love regardless of how much we resist.
Leyla found a way through the writing of her book about Charm to reach out to all that read it. I am honored that I was given the opportunity to read her story and share this amazing experience with her.

Sometimes a certain animal is meant to be with a certain person; that definitely seems to be the case in this cute and touching story. The tale is full of contrasts, one could even say contradictions, but that's part of the reason that I loved it so much —there are some interesting conclusions that one can draw from such contrasts. For example, no one in the story has a name other than simply father, mother, brother or aunt. Similarly, the author is known only as "I". The only beings that do have names are the two black cats, each named Charm in turn. What to make of that?

Then there’s the fact that the author deeply loved her dear cat Charm but seemed unconcerned about him escaping all the time, escaping to obvious and likely dangers. If you love someone (or something), set it free… I suppose, but somehow I don't believe this is the intention or the meaning here. The author implies in her introductory statements that if something (or someone) comes too easily into your life, it may just as easily be lost. How many times have you let a good thing slip through your hands for much the same reason?

She seems to be quite the animal lover, but then surprises us with talk about making an animal sacrifice, to another animal of all things—proposing to take the life of a rooster in this case. Perhaps under great stress we all bend our beliefs a bit— a normal response to a particularly harrowing experience. That seems to be a minor theme throughout the story. So was disappointment in its various presentations; disappointment with being lied to, the disappointment of failure, and disappointment with being let down by the people closest to her. The cute little cat with a mind of his had come to teach her so many things!

There was one passage in the story that puzzled me greatly. Here it is: "Besides, according to my count, [XYZ] occurred on September 30, my brother’s birthday. I was fighting off dismal thoughts about what had happened and was going crazy until I found out." Hmm… and I am still waiting to find out what she found out if anything!

I very much enjoyed this short story. It all hangs together nicely and left me feeling very satisfied if ever so slightly puzzled. It made me think, which is what most makes me remember a book or not. Memorable book!

CHARM—a love story of a timeless bond
By T. L. Needham, Author on August 4, 2014
Format: Paperback
CHARM, by Leyla Atke, is a remarkable true story, with lovely illustrations, about a girl and the cat she rescues from certain demise. An enthralling tale of the deep bond of love that may form between a pet and their human caregiver. The story takes a heart-rending turn as the beloved cat disappears, and the owner eventually finds its remains. At this point the story is graphic, yet real and authentic, as it deals with life and death. This is essential to express the grief and loss the author experienced. Plus, it is a key to reveal how this story ends, or rather, has a new beginning. This lovely and heartfelt story will embrace any reader, and hold you tight. It will leave you wondering about destiny, fate, and the bonds of love that connect us. A timeless bond which links us to those we love in a way that transcends one life, the spirit, and the future; to reveal a common destiny we share . . . to remain linked to those we love, and who love us in return.

Sometimes we find pets, and sometimes pets find us. Either way, it's meant to be! Based on a true story, in "Charm: An Amazing Story of a Little Black Cat", Leyla saves Charm from harm's way, and the two quickly form a strong bond. When Charm runs away, Leyla does not know what happened and worries about his fate. She later finds what she thinks are his remains but still doesn't understand exactly what happened to him. After healing for a year, another special kitty enters her life almost as mysteriously as its predecessor, making readers wonder if they were destined to meet. Resolving not to make the same mistakes that lead to the original Charm's disappearance, Leyla treasures her new chance with a precious pet.

I read book this with my eight year old daughter, who love animals, and both of us could relate to the impact pets and other animals have on our lives. Set up as a short chapter book, but sprinkled with the author's own illustrations, the book may be read as a family or by older children who are able to read on their own.

Charm (An Amazing Story of a Little Black Cat) is truly a wonderful and charming story. Based on a real experience the author had when she found a stray kitten in trouble, the story is emotional, insightful, and profound. The story struck a chord with me about why and when pets leave us, and how we find pets or they find us. I thoroughly enjoyed Charm and it is one of those stories that will linger in the reader’s mind. I highly recommend this book for young and old alike—it really is a magical tale.

4 stars only because I thought the writing was for an older age level than the illustrations were, yet both were wonderful in each its own way.

A little stray black cat, all alone. A caring, thoughtful person willing to take it in and care for it. But it’s difficult to keep an outdoor cat inside.

Charm was determined to go outside, but would always return. One day Charm did not return and Leyla was a bit concerned. After a few days, the concern increased. Without giving away the ending, Leyla tells a story for both children and adults alike.

A quick read, easy for children to sit through, but insightful for adults as well.

Charm is a simple yet profoundly moving book about a foundling, a little black cat who the author names Charm. His energy field, loving and elegant nature and very presence brings joy and comfort, which dissipates when he mysteriously disappears. This is a story of love, loss and love rediscovered. My husband is a Veterinarian and he speaks of the chasms of love and loss around our furry friends.

Lelya Atke enjoys status as an award-winning author for her debut tale, Charm: An Amazing Story of a Little Black Cat,” and for good reason. Opening with the events of a typical day, Atke tells of her discovery of a little kitten, dirty, neglected, smelling of kerosene, and lost amidst the rush of cars on a freeway. Initially, she considers leaving the kitten, then reconsiders. She rescues it, brings it home and cleans it up. Shortly thereafter, she dubs the kitten—which steals her heart—“Charm.” Charm is “smart, serious, quiet and calm.” But life can throw unusual things our way, and so it did to the author and her beloved pet, Charm. When Atke finds him missing one day, she begins her hunt. To tell you what she finds would be to give away too much . . .

The real “charm” of Charm, is Atke’s love for her pet. When he goes missing, something magical happens. Did Charm live on? To answer that question might well be to give away the ending—but this much I can say for sure: Charm does indeed live on—whether simply in the pages of Atke’s story, or for real, I will leave to other readers to determine for themselves.

A incredible true story about a little black kitten found miraculously unharmed amid a busy street--the first time. The narrator of the story, Leyla, rescues the kitten which she decides to call Charm and quickly grows attached. Sadly, one day Charm goes missing, and the result is not so favorable--or so we think. Leyla devastatingly discovers what she believes to be Charm's body--until another black kitten identical to the Charm Leyla had found years before on the street shows up at her window--right beside Charm's grave. A miraculous tale of mystery, loss, and hope of rekindled friendship. Of reincarnation, learning important life lessons, and the presence of a Higher Power. This story is accompanied by charming illustrations and photographs of Charm who the reader will fall in love with again--and then again.

This is an autobiographical story of the author and some very special feline friends. As a cat mom myself, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read and review this story.

Emotionally, this story is a bit of a roller-coaster. It goes from heartwarming to heartbreaking and back to heartwarming. It also leaves you wondering about things like fate, destiny and reincarnation.

The great thing about this little book is that it is really for any age group. Adults can read it to small children, and older children and adults can read it on their own. I think it would be a good resource for children who are experiencing the loss of a pet.

A PICTURE BOOK WITH A BIG MESSAGE
I love this story for it's message about the power of love and devotion, and for the cultural insights of a place I'd love to visit. (maybe I got that because I know the author, award-winning Leyla Atke, is from Denmark--because it's subtle, but there) Our animal friends imprint our character. And we all know cats have multiple lives; right? Well, Charm is no exception, and he's determined. I think it's fair to say smaller children may be put off by the cat's apparent demise, and why, but even that can turn into a teaching moment about cruelty and loss...and love of a nature beyond us mere mortals.

This is a good read for pet lovers out there. People who do not own pets don't know how crushed we become when a pet leaves us. We treat a pet as family and our hearts break when it passes on. This book is full of heart and kindness and hope.

I read this to my little boy the other night and he loved it. Last night, I read it to him again, never mind if he was already so sleepy. When he woke up this morning, he saw one of the kittens that our cat just gave birth to, one was really grey and he said, "Mom, that's Charm!"

Before he left for school this morning, he whispered, "Mom, tell me Charm's story again tonight before I go to sleep. No reading. You have to memorize!" What a challenge!

Leyla Atke has written a beautiful, CHARMing tribute to a tiny black cat that was miraculously introduced into the author's life. Each providing love and warmth, a bond is formed between writer and a cat she names Charm, that is short lived and unfairly ended. Missing and mourning her beloved Charm, a tiny black miracle appears in a most familiar place. Coincidence? A blessed second chance to make things right? However the reader perceives the message, it's a story that can be loved by all ages and one that animal lovers can identify with.

I had chills while reading this story because I expirenced something similar with my cat, Mojo. I understand exactly how Leyla felt - the pain of loss and the bond you feel even after your loved one is gone in the physical sense. I love this stories message & I think it's important for children to learn that we are always connected to the ones we love and that wonderful things are always possible.

A beautiful short story about a little black kitten and the person who rescued him. It is a real story and the rescuer is the author herself.
Leyla told us her experience with Charm, how she rescued him from being run over by cars and how he brought love and joy to Leyla's life. It is well-written and the drawings are very beautiful.
If you like animals, especially cats, and have children, this is the story to read together.

I was given a pdf copy by the author for a honest review. This is a sweet story of a kitten that was found, lost , and then mysteriously "found" again. It is a touching story and I felt for the author having lost several beloved pets over the years. It makes me happy that another Charm found a good home with lots of love.
