7/10.

I'm finally starting to feel like this is actually going somewhere.

Tegami Bachi Review

4/5 stars

This will be a spoiler free review. Onto the review!

I picked up this manga on the recommendation of a friend. Well actually, she recommended the anime, but I wanted to read the manga since the anime never got finished. I have mixed feelings about this one. Maybe the anime would help. I don’t know.

The story follows this kid who decides to become a mail courier because he was once mailed somewhere, and it left an impression on him. Being a mail courier is a super dangerous job, because there are giant bugs that live in between the cities and try to eat people. People generally don’t travel a lot due to this issue. I loved the story and the characters. It was really fun to get to meet all the other mail couriers. They all have animal companions of some kind, which help them to fend off the bugs until they can take them down with special magical guns.

The main character’s goal is to eventually find his mother, who originally mailed him to his aunt at the start of the first volume. He remembers her from when he was little, and wants to know why she sent him away. Learning more about his mother is the main mystery of the series, which leads him to many new places where he meets lots of new, interesting people. And along the way, there are these giant bug fights that are really fun.

Now here’s where I feel conflicted. The main character’s animal companion is this random girl who decides to follow him around. She’s not technically human, so that’s how she’s able to count as an animal companion despite looking like a kid. Because she’s not human, she does not understand the need for acting like the humans do. What this generally means is a big chunk of the early volumes, she finds a dumb excuse to not wear pants for a panel or two. It’s always censored with big block text that literally says “censored,” but it was still kind of uncomfortable to read about.

Also, near the middle of the series we meet her older sister, who literally walks around naked because she also has no understanding of human behavior. She thinks of herself as more of an animal than her little sister does, because she lives out in the wild and doesn’t interact with people. When she has to be around people, she puts on a ribbon that she ties very carefully in a specific way, if you get my meaning.

Listen, I’ve seen worse fan service (see: Ghost in the Shell). I don’t mind the older sister doing what she does, because she’s an adult and can do whatever she wants. But the little sister is a kid. She looks to be maybe 10ish. As I said before, it’s always censored, so we’re never seeing anything. But for me personally, it’s the principle that matters. I read the entirety of this manga, because I felt it would be important to judge it after seeing where the manga went and if it continued to be an issue. It does go away for a while, but then near the end of the series, she loses her pants again briefly and I just ugggghhhhhhhhhhh whyyyyyyyyyyy…we were over this…

I did like the series as a whole. It has a great story with a lot of heart. For that alone, I think this is a great series and would recommend it. But you’ll have to consider for yourself if you want to read a series with so little pants. Wow, that’s a brand new sentence no one has ever said before. Consider your comfort level and read this at your own risk.

Have a nice day/night everyone!

Some of the words I’ve been longing to hear the most finally get said in this volume of “Tegami Bachi”, as well as the return of one of my favorite bromances in anime/manga today in full force. If you’re a fan of this series, you’re going to love this volume. I know I did. With some of the most heartwarming and gorgeous art so far, “Tegami Bachi: Volume 11″ really takes us for a ride we won’t soon forget.

So far, this feels like one of the most cohesive volumes in terms of not only bringing all of the characters (and their arcs) together, but bringing around the main arc full center. It’s almost as complete as the early volumes were when they were just introducing us to the world of Amberground. To find and fight the sinister organization Reverse (which stole Gauche’s heart), all of the Bees we’ve come to know and love are in on the fight in their own ways. Yeah, guys, even Jiggy Pepper is in on the action. I’m so glad to see Aria also getting put more to work in this volume, since she usually just feels like a background accessory in so many of the others.

We also have a new Gaichuu that’s sentient (and totally freaked me out) and seemingly linked with Reverse – Cabernet, which has all of the senior Bees out of the post office and hunting it down. In some of the most vicious and balls out storytelling we’ve seen from Asada so far (aside from Reverse literally stealing Gauche’s heart and making him into an evil zombie), there’s human sacrifices to attract Cabernet in huge piles pretty much everywhere. While not overly gory, it was enough to make the point: this is not just another huge, stupid metal beetle. It, like Reverse, feeds on human hearts.

Okay. Just got the chills from just remembering that.

And finally, we have the return of my favorite dingo, Niche (and Steak)! I missed these two, and while they were awesome with Aria, I missed their comic relief and bigger role that they usually played by Lag’s side during deliveries.

There are some very important answers we get after volumes and volumes of questions (what happened to Gauche after Reverse took him? And what are the other Bees’ dingoes, how do they function alongside them?), so this was generally a really satisfying volume in this series. But don’t hope for a happy ending – this not only isn’t the end of the series, but a plot twist I didn’t even see coming will really shock you in the final pages of this book.

So overall? A must-read for the series. Absolutely fantastic. “Tegami Bachi/Letter Bee: Volume 11″ is out now from Viz in North America, so what are you waiting for? Go out and read it! It definitely deserves a good long read.

When I watched the anime of this, my absolute favorite part was when it shows their memories after they shoot their shindan. That's my favorite part in this manga volume as well. The way it looks is simply marvelous - a breathtaking montage of the things most important to Letter Bee.
I loved that this volume showed Gauche back with Lag and Sylvette, as he wasn't with them in the anime, and I was left saddened, wishing that Gauche would return and end Lag's and Sylvette's sadness. Seeing them interacting in this familial way was wonderful and heartwarming. But, as all go things go, there had to be a reason it had to end, but after Gauche saves Lag from disaster, it returns.
We are also treated to a mission that has Zazie going along with his hero, Jiggy Pepper, on the iron horse to terminate the life of the gaichu called Cabernet. It's a touching story of a wish being granted and teamwork conquering all.

This volume was provided to me by VIZ Media, via Edelweiss, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are my own.
They have also provided me with V12 as well, and I will be doing that one in the next week or 2. I would love to read more of this wonderfully joyful manga series.

Reason for Reading: Next in the series.

This is a very readable series and while I need the "story so far" blurbs each book begins with, it hardly takes me any time to get back into the flow of the story. This is an action-packed volume in which most of our huge cast of characters make an appearance, however brief. Not something that happens often at all. The story's main focus is on whether Gauche is really back to himself or is Noir in disguise. But we also have cut scenes to all the other characters working on fighting against/finding Reverse. There is an exciting major battle scene in which many of our hero characters congregate together to battle the main monster and we finally meet Moc's Dingo; very unusual from all the others! I'm getting anxious at this point for the truth to be revealed to our heroes. We the reader know more than they do, which is becoming frustrating, but we don't know the whole truth either. If the heroes knew at least as much as the reader we could at least sort out which groups are truly the good and bad guys because as it stands now there are a lot of grey areas and at volume 11 this is feeling like it's time to move on in plot for me. Frustrating but in a good way, if ykwim!

This is a very emotional volume, and emotion is what Tegami Bachi has always been great at. Joy of a long awaited reunion, sadness of the inevitable departure, awe at seeing a dream come true, fear of the unknown, pride of a job well done, and the melancholic beauty of the art are all weaved together masterfully in this volume.

Hadn't heard of this series before. But saw some of the covers and the premise sounded interesting. So far the series has its moments. Looking forward to the next volume.

Great chase sequence after Cabernet and an even greater plot twist that had not even crossed my mind. Good volume.
