Rate this book
Hannah Nelson, a native New Zealander, has been accepted to DePaul University in Chicago. She had been living in Portland, Oregon for several years, and is relieved to be away from the questions surrounding the sudden disappearance of her close friend, Emma. While at her dance studio, housed in an historic building in downtown Chicago, she is drawn to a painting of a handsome man from 1865, and as she looks into his emerald green eyes, her world goes black. Christopher Butler is in Lincoln's War Cabinet and working with his close friend, Clayton Madden to keep the President safe. Upon returning from Lincoln's historic Gettysburg Address, he hears a strange noise in his barn, and enters to find a beautiful woman unconscious on the straw strewn floor. He realizes quickly she is the key to his sanity and he will never let her go. As Hannah navigates her new world and comes to terms with the fact she has been transported back in time, will she allow Christopher to love her? Will she find answers about what happened to Emma in her own circumstances, and will she find out if her presence in the past will help the state of the future?

*2.5 stars really
I orginally read this book years ago and suddenly thought about it again so I decided to reread it for nostalgia sake. However, I was disappointed to find it was not as good as I remember. There is a lot of unnecessary crying in the book and the main character is supposed to be a strong independent woman but she falls a little short of that. She has her moments of strong independent woman but she often plays the damsel in distress which I found to be a little confusing. It just seemed like she was two different characters sometimes in that aspect. Her backstory was confusing as well. It was implied she was not close to her family and left New Zealand to get away from them, then it was implied she grew up in foster care, then she mentioned her mother multiple times fondly and worried about her family not knowing what happened to her. I had trouble following that and I spent too long trying to put the pieces together because it didn't make sense! The male lead also had some moments where I think he needed to chill out a bit and overreacted to things. Overall the plot was cute and all but I struggled to finish the book. The book probably wasn't that bad, it just wasn't my thing.

Continuing the Civil War Brides sage. Highly recommended that you read the first 2 in the series in order to get a better understanding of the characters and plot. Theoretically, these could be considered stand-alone, but several plot points are not tied up at the end. Fairly well edited.

Hannah is Emma's best friend, and has been missing her since she disappeared. One evening, she goes to her dance studio, gets trapped in the stairwell, and finds herself in a room with a portrait of a very handsome man, painted in 1865. Oh well. Instead of finding a way out of the room and back to her studio, she finds her way out and into the stable of one Christopher Butler. The very same Christopher Butler who works with Clayton Madden, Emma's new husband. Small world right? Except Hannah finds that this small world has taken her from 2018 Chicago to 1863 Maryland. Christopher takes Hannah back to his home in Washington DC, and very shortly is reunited with her friend Emma. And surprise, Emma has a new husband. And don't forget, Sophie and Jamie are also here (and by that I mean 1863, not Washington DC). Much to Christopher's displeasure, Emma whisks Hannah away from his home. Very shortly thereafter, (I am talking mere days here) Christopher declares himself and asks to court Hannah. It isn't long before he proposes, and just after the new year - 1864 - they are married. Just as Emma had done before marrying Clay, Hannah tells Christopher the truth of her origins. He takes it very well. What he doesn't take so well is her ability to defend herself. After all, the mind-set of 1864 is much different from the mind-set of 2018. Hannah had been engaged in working for a private investigator in her modern life, and she works to use those skills to help Christopher. Eventually, her skills save her and help to apprehend a few of the bad guys. However, by the end, there is still the mystery of what exactly the Cary's hope to accomplish with their own time traveling. Happy note - Hannah and Christopher are pregnant and Jamie and Sophie welcome their baby. Oh, and we find someone else is also from the future.

Overall, this is pretty interesting. So many things are alluded to, but still it seems no real answers are forthcoming. The inconsistencies between Books 1 and 2 are settled towards the details in 2. However, there was a new conundrum. We are given to understand that the reason Hannah left New Zealand was because she was in foster care and had had a terrible family. Coming to America was her way of starting over and distancing herself (quite literally) from her family. And, the move is what led to her connecting to Sophie and Emma's family so much that they formed an almost sisterly bond. However, in Book 3, we are told that she misses her family a great deal. So, which is it? Did her New Zealand family give her the creepy crawlies or the warm fuzzies? Again, I don't care which, just pick and stick. Those things aside, I still want to know what is going on. Why are the Cary's involved? What are they trying to accomplish? And, how exactly are all these people being brought back in time supposed to help keep things correct? I guess only time will tell. Ha. Enjoy.

I really like the premise of this series, even though I'm not generally into time travel stories. This love story is very sweet. Hannah is a strong and competent woman who is sent to a time when women are expected to be very much dependent on a man. Christopher is a protector and very accepting of the reality where Hannah came from.

I liked the bit of intrigue and action to keep things interesting. The scenes where they meet Mrs. Lincoln were fun. I also really enjoyed the setup for Gwen and Andrew's story, and I can't wait to read it!

I will admit that there were some things I didn't love. The story felt very similar to book 2, to the point where it was almost repetitive in parts. Also, the incessant use of awful nicknames like "Han-Han" and "Knight" drove me batty. It wouldn't be so bad if they were used occasionally, but it felt like at least once per page and took away from the story. However, it did do a good job of setting up the next story, I am really intrigued for book 4! 3.5 stars

Fabulous 3rd installment!

I absolutely adore this Civil War Brides series - I cannot get enough of these books! There is something so unique about them! This book focused on Christopher and Hannah and their chemistry together was something special. Christopher was a little prickly and bossy and took himself a little too seriously at times so when Hannah shows up with her "evolved", "take no prisoners" attitude and shows Christopher that she is more than capable of taking care of herself and won't be told what to do, he doesn't quite know what to make of her and it made for rather amusing reading! I really loved these two as a couple as well as catching up with Sophie and Jamie and Emma and Clayton. Now I can't wait for Andrew and Gwendolyn's book!

I have really enjoyed this series! Each book gets better and better! I loved that Hannah gave Christopher a run for his money! She is spunky and does not back down to Alpha Christopher. This book has hilarious moments and tender romantic moments. We get to catch up with the rest of the crew from the previous books. There are plot twist and turns during the backdrop of the Civil War. If you are looking for a great historical romance with a twist this is the series for you! I am
not normally a fan of time travel books but I love this series and can’t wait for the next book!

A must read
As the saying goes ‘behind every great man is a great woman’. In this book we read about another great woman from 2017 who somehow travels back in time, meets a great man and falls in love with him. Sounds like another slushy romance? Don’t be fooled! Hannah is strong on the outside but when she meets her future husband she’s gooey on the inside. He’s an alpha male who’s in charge of Abraham Lincoln’s security and there’s mystery and intrigue as well as panty melting scenes! A must read.

I forgot how much I love time travel books until I started this series. The third book in the series is Hannah's story a friend of Sophie, Emma, and Jamie (Sophies husband) who had their stories in the previous two books. Hannah disappears from Modern time Chicago, reappears in the Civil War era. Reunited with her friends, love, laughter and danger abounds. Love this talented, versatile author who is a must read for me. Looking forward to the next book from this Author.

Christopher & Hannah

Piper’s journey into the Civil War continue with Christopher and Hannah. Hannah travels through time and finds not only her best friends but the love of her life. I loved Hannah’s strength and resilience. Poor Christopher may have gotten more than he bargained for. Chris learns tolerance and Hannah learns patience (kind of). This is my favorite of the Civil War series so far.

The series just keeps getting better and better!! Every book in this series sucks me in a little further. I find myself even more invested in the characters, families and community. I love seeing how those from the earlier books are doing and getting to know others more in depth in each book. This is Hannah and Christopher’s book and it was amazing!!

The journey back in time to the Civil War continues, with Hannah's story. She is taken back from present day Chicago to land in Christopher Butlers barn. Christopher quickly realizes she is meant to be his. Hannah soon discovers her best friends were sent back in time as well and they are joyously reunited! The mystery of why they are all brought back continues... Excellent book! Highly recommend!!

I honestly was not that impressed by this book. I had pretty high expectations going into it, because the synopsis sounded really interesting, but I just wasn’t a fan of the execution.

Christopher was not that likeable of a person and I kept waiting for when he was going to do something that would make me like him, but that never came. Every time he did anything wrong, he never had to grovel because Hannah forgave him in five seconds.

Overall, Hannah and Christopher’s relationship was just way too insta-love for me. It felt like right after they met, they were already in love and getting married, even though they had just met a few days/weeks ago.

Each book in this time travel to American Civil War era series just seems better than the one before it. Right from the start I was engaged in this story mostly because I really liked the modern day heroine, Hannah Nelson, who is sent back into the past and the hero in the past, Christopher Butler. Both were minor characters in the previous books so I already knew where they fit in the scheme of things.

This is definitely a series that needs to be read in order for things to make sense because there is an ongoing story arc and the characters tie together. This is the third story in the series.

Hannah Nelson is a transplanted New Zealander now going to school and working in Chicago. She is studying dance and moonlights as a private investigator. Hannah uses her investigative skills to continue pulling together clues to the disappearance of her best friend Emma, Emma's siter, Sophie, and Sophie's husband Jamie. She detects a pattern of where the disappearances take place, but can't think of what it can mean. Not that it matters because no sooner does Hannah go to practice at the dance studio that's housed in a historic building than she stumbles on a portrait of a handsome man and a time portal opens. She is then whisked to the past and found inside the man in the portrait's barn.

Christopher Butler is a man who likes to be in control of things. His sister Gwendolyn challenges him on how concerned she is because he is tight and serious all the time and she holds a certain lady of his acquaintance responsible. But then Christopher finds his life turned upside down when Hannah Nelson blazes into his ordered world. She challenges him and stands up to him. He should be affronted, but instead he is enchanted. Chris has no idea what to do with the new state his emotions are in as he can't seem to get enough of Hannah.

Hannah can't believe how quickly she has fallen for a man in the past. She's still trying to wrap her head around the fact that she time-travelled and all the missing people are right there, but that doesn't change the fact that Chris has swiftly become the most important person in her life. The speed to which her feelings turn to love scare her. Chris is right in it with her though. But the threat from those who wish to alter the past cannot be ignored as they discover that Hannah is on their hit list amongst other schemes they have. Hannah's skill learned from being an investigator maybe the only thing that stands between her and danger when the time comes.

The plot of this one is similar to the others in the series in that the heroine is brought back from the present, the hero is from the past, there is romance and there is intrigue. It could easily feel like the same story, but it's not really because each heroine is so different as are the heroes. I think this is my favorite hero and heroine so far. I just loved how Hannah is a no-nonsense 'get 'er done' type and how her personality really compliments Chris who has the smarts to see a woman worth having, but must learn to get past his false assumptions and overprotective behavior. The humorous scenes when Chris errors and has to come to Hannah with an apology were fun to read. They are a very tender and passionate couple who I loved see come together.

The focus is mainly on the romance, but the conspirators are still there. I'm still not entirely sure what they're up to, but at least there was more detail given about the 'how' to the time travel worked and the 'why' certain people are picked to be brought back. I look forward to further revelations to the bad guys' agenda as the series progresses.

I love how each story keeps up with recurring characters and stays au currant with the previous heroes and heroines. The revelation in regard to Christine's Stephen was pretty cool. I'm really looking forward to certain characters getting their stories.

I recommend the book/series to those who enjoy time travel romance that is on the sweet side.

Thank you to the author for providing my copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Tracey Jane Jackson has written four books so far of the "Civil War Brides" series, another due out in June I believe. I don't know how many she plans to write, but this reader has enjoyed three so far and is looking forward to reading number four! I love time travel books and she has done this, including mystery, romance and modern humor in her stories. What more can a reader ask for?
The books are written in such a way, that you finish each, looking for the next, and I'm sure the author planned on that.
This author has a lot of sweet romance in her books and leaves most things to the imaginations which is a nice touch. Too much can be a turn off. In this particular book of the series we learn more about the time travel portal and how it works, and who can do the traveling, and the reasons some of the characters past and future are sent back to 1863. The civil war era, Lincolns time, most of the story takes place in the area of Gettysburg, Washington DC and Virginia.
This author is well versed in the history of this time period and shares much in her books, they are rich in history. It is the knowledge of the characters that go back in time, shared amongst them as they find each other, that they must not do anything to alter the outcome of history more than going back to the period from the current year. You can imagine it would leave anyone hard pressed not to interfere with the knowledge that Lincoln will be assasinated, as it would forever alter the history of the present world. They do have a run in wiht characters from the future who are trying to do just that, alter the future, and that is very present in this particular book. I'll not say anything more I would spoil it for you. You'll have to read the book to find out if the evil characters are able to make changes to the future by altering the past.
Here is the verbage as written on the back of the book:
Hannah Nelson, a native New Zealander, is drawn to a painting of a handsome man from 1865, and as she looks into his emerald green eyes, her world goes black. Christopher Butler is in Lincoln's War Cabinet and working to keep President Lincoln safe. As Hannah navigates her new world and comes to terms with the fact she has been transported back in time, will she allow Christopher to love her?

This third in an 8-novel series again links the characters in previous novels with the main characters. Hannah is best friends with the heroines of book 1 & 2 while the hero is business partner and member of Lincoln's War Office along with the hero from Book 2. Yet the story is fresh in its own way as the heroine is a native of New Zealand, a country unknown to 19th century Americans and encountering a woman with her accent was a shock, one that led most of those living during the Civil War to believe she was from the UK. Her struggles were those of all the people who had been transported back in time, acclimating to the differences in dress, lack of technology and transportation forms to which 21st century citizens take for granted, as well as the social contraints on women at that time. Dressing in slacks or jeans, riding horses astride, expressing one's opinions freely, etc. were just a few of the difficulties that made Hannah determined to return to modern times. Yet her growing attachment to Christopher Butler kept getting in the way. This is a very romantic story, certainly not at all laced with eroticism as the love scenes are pretty much lacking in heat. But there is a lot of inference and the intensity of the lovers' response to one another is never in doubt. The story is interwoven with lots about the Civil War, with the characters' love of their families, their close friendships, and their evident love of horses. The "love affair" of Sophie with a horse named Samson provides some fun reading in all of these first three books. It is very well written and the story moves along--no dead spots here, but there is that sense that the underlying reason for the time travel of each of these heroines has historical significance. There is also the temptation to interfere with the flow of history and each must struggle with knowing what is coming and deciding what to do about that, most especially Lincoln's assassination. Good reading and the kind that kept me going from page one right to the end. Can't wait for the next one.

Everytime I finish one of Tracey's books I think there is no way she can beat it. Everytime I am surprised and honestly I have no idea why it surprises me because she is fabulous. This book is definitely no different. I really, really loved Emma and Clayton's book and thought there was no way I could love the next one more, but I was wrong. Hannah is Emma's best friend and when Emma disappeared it devastated her little did she know that she was transported back in time. Hannah goes to an old building and is staring at a picture of the most handsome man she has ever seen and all of a sudden everything goes black and she wakes up staring at that same man but in real life. She is quite thrown for a loop to discover that it is the 1800's and also to discover that her best friend is there as well. Christopher, oh man what to say about that man. He definitely doesn't quite know what to think about Hannah. He just knows very quickly that Hannah is the woman for him. Their story is amazing and will hook you from the very first page right up to the end. And when it's over you are left wanting so much more. I love that all the books have previous characters in them and that is just one more reason to love these books. I look forward to seeing what comes next for all these characters. A copy was gifted in exchange for an honest review. This book deserves more than 5 stars but since that is all it will let me choose it is definitely 5++ AMAZEBALLS stars!!

Really, each book in this series sucks me in a little further. I find myself even more invested in the characters, families and community. The continuation of the family story is wonderfully told and three books in hasn’t gotten redundant or boring. I love seeing how those from the earlier books are doing and getting to know others more in depth in each book. Couldn’t put it down and looking forward to starting book 4!

Please know, I received a free copy of this book in return for my honest review and am very happy about that as this is now one of my favorite series of books and Tracey Jane Jackson is now officially on my favorite authors list!
