Hendrik Magdalenus Bruna was een Nederlandse grafisch vormgever, tekenaar en schrijver van kinderboeken. Hij werd wereldberoemd met zijn kinderboekjes over nijntje.
This is a nice simple retelling of the Christmas story. I do like the long page format of this book and the white cover. The ribbon book mark with an angel attached is a really nice addition.
I was dissapointed that this didn't include traditional Miffy colours. Dick Bruna is famous for his use of yellow, navy blue, racing green and what he calls red but everyone else seems to know as orange. This story had a totally different colour scheme and a slightly more cartoon like drawing style. I really liked the angels, they were quite Miffy-esq and the olive green and yellow seemed quite in keeping with Bruna colours but then sky blue and tan were introduced. It's still a limited and quite nice colour palette, perhaps I would get used to it, glad there is nothing garish. It's still a very nice book but perhaps felt a little too polished and not like the early days of Miffy with her more pointed ears and slightly jarring edgy colours.
Having just read this again perhaps I like it more and it's nearer a 4 star. Different but good. The end page information says the original text and illustrations were first printed in 1963, it would be interesting to see if these have changed at all.

We spent the weekend with extended family. A weekend of laughter, sugar, dancing, and eating. The children were hyped and it was bedtime.
I volunteered to read to them.
I took with me a pile of variety, and a heaping of patience. Plopping myself on the floor, I read to the two 3 year olds and the 5 year old.
The book they asked to have repeated?
"The Christmas Book" by Bruna.
It's a classic Christmas book.
Using simple illustrations and a narrative picked to its (most important) bones, Bruna finds a way to make the story of Christ's birth approachable and engaging.
First reading Nov 2014 Vintage hardback, printed in The Netherlands, discovered in a charity shop - perfect for reading to grandson. Delighted to intro grandson to Bruna's simplicity of colour and characters of the Christmas Story along with rhythmmic verse of Eve Merriam.
Excelente adaptación para niñas y niños acerca de la historia del nacimiento de Jesús. Las ilustraciones son bellísimas y aunque una no sea religiosa, es una bonita opción para este mes y pasar un buen rato de frío ❄️
