He was chasing a criminal.
She was fleeing the law.
One accident made their worlds collide.

An accident on a frozen highway brings two strangers together. Nate Morrison has no recollection of what placed him on that icy stretch so far from home. In his line of business, memory loss was unacceptable and accountability was crucial.

Upon her parents’ death, Emily Brennan became the sole guardian of her brilliant, yet eccentric brother. Her devotion to protect him from a world that shunned the abnormal made her do the unthinkable. She stole designs from National Marine Dynamics…and now she was on the run.
Only an hour from the promise of safety, Emily witnesses the car behind her spin out of control on an icy stretch of highway. Fear dictated that she should flee, but the body slumped on the shoulder of the road appealed to her humanity.

Emily and Nate are two strangers thrown together by an errant patch of ice. Would the truths of their identities tear them apart or would they unite in battle against an egomaniac that threatened the safety of innocent civilians.

Maureen A. Miller

USA TODAY bestselling author Maureen A. Miller worked in the software industry for fifteen years. She crawled around plant floors in a hard hat and safety glasses, hooking up computers to behemoth manufacturing machines. The job required extensive travel. The best form of escapism during those lengthy airport layovers became writing.

Maureen’s first novel, Widow's TALE, earned her a Golden Heart nomination in Romantic Suspense. After that, she became hooked on the genre. As hooked as she was, childhood fantasies still danced around in her head––little voices calling for her to write the young adult science fiction BEYOND series. To her, it was still romantic suspense…just on another planet!

Maureen is a wife. A mother of a crazy Corgi. A lover of mozzarella. And she truly believes there is a portal to outer space somewhere in her house.

MY RATING GUIDE: 3.5 Stars (closer to 4 than 3). I discovered Maureen Miller’s titles a while ago and am enjoying reading my way through them. LOST NIGHT wasn’t among my favorite Miller titles, so far, but it captured my attention and I cared about the characters. (Note -THE LOST NIGHT was published in 2015. Later, it apparently was revised and re-released as BORROWED TIME. The former version was in my tbrs so it’s the version I read).

1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/fairly good & might or might not read it again; 3.5= I ENJOYED THIS & might read it again; 4= I liked it a lot & would read it again; 5= I Loved this; it was great! & most likely will read again (I SELDOM give 5 Stars).

Near a naval base on the Northeast coast, January ~
Worn out from near death situations present in his previous career, former Naval Intelligence operative Nate Morrison, 36, changed careers 3yrs ago looking for something with less danger and more stability. Except for a few personality differences within the hierarchy, Nate’s position as Chief of Security for National Marine Dynamics, a government funded research facility with highly classified projects connected to Homeland Security has mostly met his expectations. Nate was content with the career change until several days ago when 2 NMD engineers, for no apparent reason, stole blueprints from one of the secured labs. The nature of ideas continuously generated at NMD requires absolute workplace security. Such a major theft requires Nate to quickly locate the engineers and return with them and the missing blueprints.

Marine engineer Emily Brennan’s younger brother Colin is an incredibly brilliant young man but his questionable interpersonal skills hamper his relationships with his peers. As a NMD employee, Emily was recently able to secure a research engineer position for Colin as well. Things were going well enough until Colin began dabbling with a new concept which he suddenly realized would cause the death of innocent people. Colin convinced Emily that they needed to remove his incompleted drawings from NMD labs before anyone noticed them. While doing this, Emily gets caught by the security camera. Now both Colin and Emily are on the run from the very company that once employed them and Security Chief Nate Morrison has been sent to locate them and bring them back for questioning.

Comments ~
LOST NIGHT is a standalone, Proximity-Danger/On-the-Run, Slow-Burn, Enemies to More trope Suspense.Intrigue.Romance novel. I was quickly pulled into the story but later occasionally found my mind wandering. I still enjoyed the intrigue and wondered how the various characters connected, exactly what information had been stolen, how the info might cause harm and to whom and how the main characters would survive the manhunt.

Proximity Danger/On the Run novels are among my favorite tropes. I also prefer books with minimal angst (stemming from miscommunication or misunderstandings). LOST NIGHT fell into this preferred niche. The Slow Burn intimacy which developed in LOST NIGHT (unlike most Romance fiction today) was also refreshingly Clean (See below).

Overall, I enjoyed LOST NIGHT and recommend it to readers who enjoy:
> Action/Adventure and Suspense Romance novels.
> Proximity Danger/‘On-the-Run’ trope Thrillers.
> Enemies to More trope.
> Minimal angst between characters.
> Strong male and female characters.
> Intelligent female characters.
> Seasoned/Mature characters.
> Slow Burn (mostly Clean) Romances with HEAs.

READER CAUTIONS ~
PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language is used.
VIOLENCE - PG-13. Thriller intrigue but not dark or graphic.
SEXUAL SITUATIONS - No scenes of intimacy occur.

This was a very interesting book. I have never read anything about marine engineering nor do I know anything about it (perhaps it is because I live in the midwest and um, well, we don't have much water around here?). I enjoy books where the characters are together for most of the book and there is a lot of interaction and dialogue rather than just the thoughts of the hero or the heroine. Maureen A. Miller does a nice job of this, which is why I like her books so much! I like suspense but the romance/relationship part is probably a little higher on my list of interests in a book and this book fit these requirements nicely.

As for the characters in the book, I felt Emily and Brian were good for each other. Neither of them was very open about themselves or their past so you don't know a lot about them, but you know enough for this book and the situation they are currently involved. I really liked Colin - Emily's brother. He was a hoot as was his friend, Ben. I enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it.

This book was just ok for me. It's another one of those stories that annoy me when the man and woman form an instant unbreakable attraction and immediately fall in love and plan to spend the rest of their lives together.
Phooey!

But the storyline was pretty good. Autistic brother. Burdened sister. Tough guy loner with a past.
You know...the usual.

I picked this book up since it was only 99 cents for my kindle. It was a really easy, entertaining read, but lacked any sort of depth. Also, I felt as though a lot of details were skipped in order to focus on the love story, instead of the mystery and doom that were surrounding the characters.
