Whether a stay-at-home mom or an airplane-hopping executive, a student or a senior adult, most women need a contemporary, encouraging vision for what it means to be a godly, biblically guided female in the twenty-first century. A biblical woman takes God's Word seriously not just at church but also in the everyday walk of life.
But can a significant and satisfying twenty-first-century womanhood really be defined from Scripture? One that can apply to all women and yet not be guilty of cookie-cutter sameness, pressing everyone into a common mold? One that will stay fresh even as a woman grows older? One that can guide her to the best in life? The answer is yes, and the result is a femininity without excesses and regrets that mark those who just go with the flow of the world.
In Life Ready Woman, best-selling author Shaunti Feldhahn helps readers take five faith steps drawn from the Bible that will help to define the best life possible. Each one is easy to understand, but requires bold faith to activate. The reward is being ready for the deeper life that God has planned.
Shaunti received her graduate degree from Harvard University and was an analyst on Wall Street before unexpectedly becoming a social researcher, best-selling author and popular speaker. Today, she applies her analytical skills to investigating eye-opening, life-changing truths about relationships, both at home and in the workplace. Her groundbreaking research-based books, such as For Women Only, have sold more than 2 million copies in 23 languages and are widely read in homes, counseling centers and corporations worldwide.
Her newest book, The Kindness Challenge, is catalyzing a movement of kindness across the country and beyond. Dozens of prominent organizations and leaders are coming together to do The 30-Day Kindness Challenge, and encourage their followers to do the same.
Shaunti’s findings are regularly featured in media as diverse as The Today Show and Focus on the Family, The New York Times and Cosmo. She (often with her husband, Jeff) speaks at 50 events a year around the world. Shaunti and her husband Jeff live in Atlanta with their teenage daughter and son, and two cats who think they are dogs.
Putting aside the two greatest commandments Jesus proclaimed - "Love God, love your neighbor" and the top ten list given to the Israelites in Exodus, Felfhahn chooses her own greatest commandment to base this book on. "Be fruitful and multiply." The premise of this book insists this is not only a commandment for Adam and Eve, but to modern day believers as well. While she professes to write for many seasons, all of these involve motherhood in some fashion. If you are single, you need to prepare for motherhood. If you are newly married, no kids, you should be in preparation for the children you will have. Never is the idea of a woman not having kids considered, save for the moments the author sites as women who overlook God's call for their own selfish ambition. As a woman who has chosen not to have kids, this book made me angry. I can't imagine the emotions a woman who desires children but is unable would have in reading this book. Although as someone who was single for a season after college, I found suggestions such as these in direct opposition to the apostle Paul's recommendations to remain single, if possible.
When I first got my copy of The Life Ready Woman: Thriving in a Do-It-All World I knew that I was going to either really love and agree with what the book had to say–or hate it.
Happily it turned out to be the first! I love the no-nonsense approach the authors take and how they say, “Look, we’re sorry–but you just CAN’T have it all–and you were never meant to at one time.” I got about halfway through the book when I realized that Shaunti (the female author) is the gal who wrote For Women Only: What You Need to Know about the Inner Lives of Men-I love that book and so it’s no surprise I loved this one as well!
I thought it was great that they broke up womens lives into “seasons” and gave specific guidance and direction for each one. I would love to do the study that goes along with this book and have even (strongly, haha) suggested it to my womens’ small group. I would highly recommend this to any woman-I feel that everyone can take away something from it!
This book provides a clear road-map for every woman who is trying to do it all - and feeling like she can't; feeling like she is a failure for not being able to do everything and please everyone. That's what we want to do as women, isn't it? We want to be all and do all. But, what happens when we fail? We beat ourselves up and think we aren't good enough.
So, what exactly is a Life Ready Woman? She is a woman who knows who she is in God's eyes and follows His calling for her life. She doesn't try to do impress anyone other than her Creator. Whether He has called her to be a world traveler, a jet-setting corporate executive, a stay-at-home mom, or a single, unmarried woman, a Life Ready Woman embraces her calling and lives life to its full, because she knows who she is called to be.
But the bigger question is, in my mind, how do we know who God has called us to be? Isn't this one of life's greatest questions? In the first half of the book, the authors explore three types of callings, that they declare are the biblical road map to being a Life Ready Woman: 1. Core Callings - Our callings as humans designed in God's image 2. Feminine Callings - Our callings as women 3. Personal Callings - Our callings as individuals
I found these sections to be a very worthwhile read. They really made me think about my life and design as a human being first (Core Calling), then as a woman (Feminine Calling), and finally as a unique individual (Personal Calling). Have you ever thought about why you are in the body you are in? God made you female for a reason! There are some really enlightening and thought-provoking topics in this section centered around the three callings. I am looking forward to going back and re-reading these sections and soaking them in.
In the second half of the book, I was actually tempted to skip through parts of it, because I didn't feel like it pertained to me. I'm glad I didn't because I would have missed out on some very valuable information. The authors explore how we are to get the best out of each season of our life (i.e. single, single but engaged, newly married, married with preschoolers, married with grade-schoolers, married empty-nester, late-in-life widow, glorified saint) and the steps we should take during each season in order to live out our biblical road map.
This book is definitely worth the time spent reading it. There is a lot of information to digest and I think I need to go back and re-read it again to get a more full understanding of all the material presented by the authors. There is one tiny thing that annoyed me in this book, though. Since there are two authors and the book is written in the first person, I found the narrative presentation to be very clumsy. When Shaunti would be writing, her section would start something like: "When I (Shaunti) ..." or "I (Shaunti)..." When Robert would be writing a specific part, the section would start in a similar fashion: "I (Robert)..." or "This happened when I (Robert)..." It got incredibly annoying to read a book in this fashion. I think it could have been presented in a different way, such as in the third person.
In any case, I would recommend this book to any woman who is trying to do-it-all and feeling like she is barely keeping her head above water. This book will definitely put your life back into perspective and make you remember that you are God's child and He has plans for your life that are greater than any plans you could ever dream of!
Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book to review for the Litfuse Publicity Group Blog Tour. This did not influence my opinion of the book.
I appreciated the concept of this book and I enjoyed the overall theme and aim. It was easy to understand and the message flowed together through each chapter. I also appreciated the wisdom and experience that Shaunti and Robert brought to this book. There were some great examples and neat ways of presenting ideas in this book.
While I liked the basic outline of The Life Ready Woman, I was also left feeling like something was missing. It's a deep topic and yet I closed the book feeling shallow. The book is based on Scripture, yet it is my opinion that it is weak in showing how Christ's birth, life, death, and resurrection effect and apply to our moment-by-moment life. There were points - like the issue of what the Biblical home is - where I cheered and said "Amen", and then other moments where I was uncomfortable with the idea presented.
I am sure most any woman could read this book and glean from the many truths presented. However, I must be honest and say that there are other books written on this same topic that are consistently stronger from cover to cover.
The catchy cover certainly makes the book inviting and intriguing, but my recommendation is to read a library copy before you purchase a copy for your own bookshelf.
BOOK OVERVIEW:
Are you a 'Doing it all' or 'Do what matters' woman?
Whether a stay at home or working mom, an airplane-hopping executive, an empty-nester caring for multiple generations or a single juggling high demands of career and personal life, today's fast-paced modern world leaves women gasping for balance. We as modern Christian women want to look to the Bible for guidance on how to manage our lives -- but because the world of women looks so different today than it did when the Bible was written, it is hard to find chapter and verse that seems to apply to our situation today.
Thankfully, God has given us exactly that timeless, unchanging guidance for how to find peace, clarity, and God's best for our lives once we know where to look! The Life Ready Woman: Thriving in a Do-It-All World, reveals a profound biblical roadmap for how each of us can find the abundant life we are longing for, rather than the stressful, torn, how-do-I-balance-it-all life we often feel like we are trying to keep up with today. Actually being a LifeReady Woman means that you are clear about your life, bold in your faith, and able to find God's best for you, and the end result will be that you not only survive but thrive in our do-it-all world.
God has given every wonderfully unique woman different skills and abilities, different desires, and different temperaments -- and every woman around the planet and through the ages is certainly living in different circumstances. But no matter what a woman's life looks like, the Bible says that God has an individual mission and plan that He's carefully designed for each of us. And He wants us to find it. Starting January 2011, The Life Ready Woman and the Life Ready Woman Video Series will help every wonderfully unique woman to thrive as she identifies and courageously pursues God's unique design and callings for her. LifeReady Woman puts you on a roadmap to make decisions that will lead to relief, delight, and fulfillment instead of regret.

This book takes a Biblical viewpoint of how the modern woman can lead the best life she can attain while still following the guidelines of the Bible and living up to her personal potential. It uses the personal examples of the two authors, as well as the examples of numerous others that these two have interacted with over the course of writing the book. A systematic approach is taken to break down the history, statistics, and advantages of the modern woman before studiously approaching the Biblical model of the female. One of the main focuses of the book is the Biblical mandate to "be fruitful and multiply" and how modern culture has both minimized and scorned this. The authors also focus on the differences between males and females, as well as their different purposes in life. Marriage is also a central theme in the book, with the authors providing lots of advice, as well as suggestions to study other resources, in order to find a husband and maintain a healthy marriage. To stress certain points throughout the book, the authors provide a visual illustration of the concepts discussed. They summarize the lessons taught in certain sections in a "Wise Steps" box, and they fill the book with sections that invite the reader to journal his own thoughts according to a certain topic. What I found the most interesting about the book was how the authors broke down the multiple purposes of any woman into three categories: our purpose as humans (Core Callings), our purpose as women (Feminine Callings), and our purpose as unique individuals (Personal Callings). Each of these are further broken down, with the Core Callings having the most emphasis throughout the book: Leave and Cleave, Be Fruitful and Multiply, and Subdue and Rule. I had a difficult time getting through this book, partly because I felt that some of the information provided simply did not apply to me and I did not find it particularly useful. I did agree with most of what the authors interpreted from Biblical scriptures, though I disliked the broad usage of many different Biblical translations. As with any Biblically-based self-help book, the Bible should be the first source and the book should be secondary. I also felt that Feldhahn used the book somewhat as a self-promotional tool, since she often refers to her previously-written book, For Women Only: What You Need to Know about the Inner Lives of Men. All the same, I appreciated the Biblical perspective and the support of marriage-minded women and stay-at-home moms. There is much wisdom in the pages of this book.
Well, if you know me or follow my posts at all, you have probably picked up on the fact that I am a very busy woman with a lot on her plate.
I commute at least an hour one way most days to my full-time job (and then back again). I have a young son (who will be turning 6 soon). I am the wife of a hardworking man. Oh yeah, and I write a bit on the side when I am able. (Which is really my outlet for the thoughts swirling in my head and is primarily my way of sharing with others what my Lord Jesus has done in my life and what He can do in anyone's life.)
Of course there are plenty of details I left out in that little life summary of mine, but you get the point.
I truly am a woman who lives "in a do-it-all world." And I am trying to thrive in it, with God's help.
So, when I heard Shaunti Feldhahn on the radio on FamilyLife Today talking with the hosts about her new book and study, The Life Ready Woman, I was completely intrigued. She described my life. She described my emotions. My struggles. My desires. She described me.
And, being a former Wall Street analyst as well as a current national speaker and syndicated news columnist, Shaunti knows what it's like to live in today's woman's world. Her research studies and writing along with that of Robert Lewis' truly get to the heart of what women today need to hear. They hit right where we need encouragement and tangible direction.
Shaunti and Robert don't just speak to women like me, but they specifically address, encourage, and guide all types of women in all seasons of life. Additionally, Life Ready Woman is just a portion of a larger vision and project called LifeReady which reaches far beyond female audiences. If Life Ready Woman is any indication, I would have to say that this LifeReady project truly will impact people, marriages, and families in a mighty way for the ultimate glory of our Lord.
Now, as you are considering this book for yourself or someone you know, I am off to get myself a copy of the study workbook based on it. Who knows...you may see me leading an online Bible study of this soon...

Title: THE LIFE READY WOMAN Authors: Shaunti Feldhahn and Robert Lewis Publisher: Broadman and Holman January 2011 ISBN: 978-14336-7112-8 Genre: Inspirational/women’s issues
THE LIFE READY WOMAN is a book for women who try to live godly lives and follow the Bible’s specific precepts. It is also for women who want to be good stewards of the gifts God has given them. To the extent that we live in accordance with God’s design and callings for us, we’ll thrive.
THE LIFE READY WOMAN is divided up in to two distinct parts. The first five chapters are about God’s desire context for our lives. In these first chapters, the authors will help us identify the mold that the world tries to fit us into and contrast that with the amazing design and callings that God created for us. The book also takes a look at what, as women, we might believe about femininity and contrasts it to what God has to say.
In part two, the book will show us, how we personally can thrive in a do-it-all world. How you are individually designed? What are your unique callings and circumstances and how do they help you arrange your life? And what steps of faith do you need to take to reach God’s heart?
THE LIFE READY WOMAN is a part of a series that includes a DVD set for women to study either on their own – or, preferably, in a small group setting. The authors say that the book can be studied on its own, but they recommend it with the DVD. The book was originally published, in part, by Robert Lewis as The New Eve.
THE LIFE READY WOMAN will help you think purposely about subjects you may have never thought about before. No matter where you are, no matter your background, or your faith beliefs, you can read this book to help you prepare for life. The book includes thoughts, questions, sayings and questions to answer in little blocks set apart from the rest of the chapter. $14.99. 230 pages.
I decided to take a break this afternoon by watching TV. On one of the trailers for a TV show, it said “Career – Family – She proves that she can have it all!” Don’t most women dream of having it all? I know I do. And if it’s on TV, then definitely most women do, too. The question is how?
The Life Ready Woman – Thriving in a Do-It-All World by Shaunti Feldhan & Robert Lewis shows us the way to having it all in this Do-It-All world. If this book seems familiar to you already, that’s because I’ve already posted about this before here. To know more about this book, go to my previous blog post first, then come back here for my review.
I REALLY LIKE THIS BOOK! There are so many good things to say that I am at a loss as to where I can start. So I’ve decided to make a numbered list of why I like and highly recommend this to all Christian women out there.
1. The outline of the book is well-thought out. The way the information was organized was one of the things that I appreciated. Part 1 began with a statistic of women’s current roles and achievements. Followed by what the Bible says about women, marriage and family. Then a discussion of God’s design and callings for women. Part 2 of the book is about finding the way to God’s best, how to best use our gifts, and finally, trusting in God to fulfill our calling.
2. It is Biblical. There is in-depth discussion on what the Bible says about our callings.
3. It is practical. The points within the book on dealing with men, marriage, families and using our gifts are practical. My favorite topic is understanding the seasons of our lives. I have learned so much about the different seasons of life and it has taught me where my current season is.
4. It can be used by women in all walks of life – single, young adult, married, widowed, elderly.
This is truly an excellent book about God’s plans and purposes for women.
Work, kids, play, life, husband, family, self, God, women balance all of them and yet how do we do it? What do we do when we get tired? How do we balance it all and yet live this life well? The Life Ready Woman is a wonderful book that speaks to women no matter what or how much is on their to-do list. Whether you are a stay at home mom, a work at home mom, or a mom who works outside of the home this book is a must read.
More than tips and tricks, author Shaunti Feldhahn points to the heart of the matter in chapters such as "What the Issues Actually Are" and "Stewarding Your Gifts from an Eternal Perspective." She also examines the overall plan of God for all humans everywhere and the more focused plan for you specifically. Even if you don't have a lot of time on your hands this is a wonderful book to work through. It is not, however in my opinion the kind of book you can read cover to cover in one night. Instead I think it is a book that needs to be read in bits and pieces, mulled over, prayed over, and then applied as you feel God is leading you. This book could easily be a life-changer or at least a perspective changer.
I truly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to all the women in my life.
*****
I received a copy of this title from Phenix Publicity for review purposes. I was not compensated in any other way for this review and all opinions are 100% my own.
This book was easy to read and follow, and the information in it is so good for women today. I really liked how the authors described the different seasons of a woman’s life and how best to live life to the fullest and bring glory to God during each one. Since I am in the ‘Married with Preschoolers’ phase of life, I was very encouraged by what was said in that section.
I don't know how I feel about this book. The first half was rough, but the second half was better. On some pages I really liked what was being said, and on other pages I felt quite differently. I was hoping reading/discussing the book would clarify my vision/mission for my current season of life.
I did appreciate her acknowledgements that every woman's life looks different.
For now, I will put this book on my shelf and perhaps read it again at a later date...
Really enjoyed this book. Pastor and author teamed up to provide practical advice for women today. Gave some overarching themes that they feel apply to all women, but provide freedom on how each women needs to implement them. Included real life examples, and advice for different seasons of life. With all the choices afforded women these days, it was a nice book to read to find some help in boiling down how to make best choices.
It's been a couple of years since I read this book, but I love, love, love this book! I want to read it again because it is timeless.
The first revelation I had when reading this book was, "You mean I don't have to do it all? I can choose not to do things?" What a burden lifted from my heart!
Also being aware that their are seasons for everything in a woman's life and having those seasons spelled out is a wonderful guide. I'm going to suggest this for our next women's Bible study.
This felt like it was stretched and fluffed to reach publishable book length. The same information / explanations could have been conveyed in roughly half the words. Worth skimming and possibly making notes.
This book has made me look at my role as a wife, mother, and child of God in a new, and more God-centered way. I will definitely read it again - and recommend it to anyone who asks. Excellent.
