Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a British writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.
Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

I own two versions of this multiple volume set. One set is quite old and still has the worn dust covers.
These stories are among the most clever ever written in English. The characters are so unique and yet evocative that each story is a fun read. The author was a master of drawing a picture of an eccentric master sleuth and the evil he unveils. I have read all stories at least twice, just as entertainment.

"The deerstalker cap and cape-backed over-coat. The pipe. The grace of gaslit Victoriana. The clop clop of carriage and cobblestone. The fog rolling in from England's imperial seas. Baker Street."

Thus do the first words of the Introduction recall to mind the setting of Doyle's famous tales of mystery, intrigue, and the triumph of deductive reasoning. Few remain unacquainted with Holmes and his singular adventures, unravelling this most baffling of crimes with the assistance of his trusty companion, Dr. Watson. We might dare to say that no one would argue the fact the words "detective" and "Sherlock Holmes" are practically synonymous. He had become so popular as a literary character he quickly overshadowed his creator during the two years the first adventures were published in the Strand Magazine beginning in 1891. When Doyle eventually "killed" him in 1893, London was thrown into a state of mourning -- men wore black arm bands, vehemently describing the author as a brute and an assassin! Eight years later, Doyle was finally persuaded to resurrect his character and he produced several additional adventures, including the classic "Hound of the Baskervilles".

This hardcover edition featuring gold scrolling on the red leather-like cover and spine is a regal treasure for library buffs who have made it their main aim in life to fill their shelves with eye-catching unabridged collections. Every adventure is included, and better yet, the stories are a facsimile print of the 1901-1905 edition printed in the Strand Magazine, complete with the original illustrations by Sidney Paget, who was hired by the Strand as the illustrator (by accident!) It is a treat to read these stories in the same format Doyle's followers read them at the turn of the last century.

Still the best crime fiction. The original illustrations and a nice faux-leather binding add to the complete package. A grand read ... ripping yarns, tally ho and all that. The game is most definitely afoot.

I've consumed a great deal of homosexual media in my time, whether written or visual, and this is by far one of the gayest things I've ever read. There is no heterosexual explanation for the relationship between Holmes and Watson. My June reading is sorted for next year, as I've just ordered the complete illustrated box set collection. Can't wait for more adventures of my favorite disaster husbands.

The Complete Sherlock Holmes Treasury. Including The Complete Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, is a classic novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, 279 pages long (First part of the novel).
The novel talks about the clever detective Sherlock Holmes and all his dangerous adventures, trying to find solutions to all kinds of problems. Sherlock Holmes is not only a clever, in fact on of the smartest, but also smart with other things like chemistry for example.
It truly is an amazing novel and one of the greatest classics. This is definitely a must read, if you're interested in adventure/detective stories- even if you're not that interested, it wouldn't hurt to read it. Furthermore it is loaded with a lot of action and adventure, the style of writing is very good and the author really put a lot of thought in this masterpiece. There is nothing to dislike about this classic novel.

I loved these stories as a child, indeed Sherlock Holmes may well be my first childhood hero. I haven't read them for years, and it would be interesting to do so now, with the benefit of maturity. Perhaps I may find new things in them. They are certainly a great introduction to the late Victorian era, with echoes of the far-flung empire and the intrigues of pre-War Europe setting the wider scene for the crimes of Londons dark and busy streets.

Holmes goes down well in small doses. It's interesting to chart the tropes that flow throughout ACD's work. Nabokov had a theory that every writer had a magic page number that signified the longest good piece they could write. In terms of Sherlock Holmes, I think the magic number is somewhere in the 40's- the shorter stories are better.

I love this book but do not think it is the complete treasury. It does not contain A Study in Scarlet, The Valley of Fear, or The Sign of Four. The only novel it contains is Hound of the Baskervilles. It does not say volume 1 or 2 anywhere on it. I'm a little disappointed as it's marketed as being the complete treasury.

Fantastic stories and writing though, of course.

I absolutely love Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's writings. He truly was a master and Sherlock Holmes lives on over a century later. Includes The Complete Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, and The Hound of the Baskervilles.
