Archambault, A., & Corbeil, J. (2006). My first Spanish English visual dictionary. Firefly Books.

Citation by: Susan Scott

Type of Reference: Dictionary

Call Number: Ref 463

ISBN: 978-1-55407-194-4
1-55407-194-1

Brief Description: This reference material is a Spanish/English dictionary for the use of elementary students. The dictionary is primarily visual and is categorized by themes.

Content/Scope: This dictionary is targeted for grades 3-6, containing 1,600 terms, 1,300 realistic illustrations that are organized in 36 themes. There are also two indexes, by language, and the Spanish terms include gender. While students could use a regular Spanish/English dictionary, the illustrations in this dictionary lend themselves to elementary aged students.

Accuracy/Authority/Bias: Firefly is a well-known publishing company. Since this is a dictionary, I feel confident that the material was created with no bias. Additionally, the dictionary review was found on Children's Core Collection, a reputable and well-known site.

Arragnement/Presentation: This eighty page reference book includes 1600 terms that are organized by themes. There are two indexes organized by language and the Spanish terms include the gender. This book is primarily illustrations to aid comprehension of the language.

Relation to other works: There is one set of a regular children's dictionary available in the library that I observed. There are currently no other Spanish/English dictionaries in this collection. Since a significiant portion of the school is Latino and ESL, I feel like this would be a wonderful addition to the existing collection.

Accessibility/Diversity: The Spanish/English dictionary would meet the needs of students whose native language is Spanish. This dictionary would also help students and teachers who speak English communicate better with students whose native language is Spanish. Furthermore, the pictures would help both Spanish and English speakers.

Citation by: Stacie Alexander

Type of reference: Dictionary

Call Number: Ref 463

The book also has English and Spanish indexes in the back to allow all readers to find information quickly. The words presented in this book are for primary students.

Accuracy/Authority/Bias: Both authors have written several other Firefly dictionaries for kids. The material appears to be correct and free of bias.

Arrangement/Presentation: Colorful images make the visuals appealing to young readers and the larger typeface makes the words stand out on the page. The information is presented in a way that is helpful for both Spanish and English speakers. Pronunciation help is not provided in this dictionary.

Relation to other works: The library has access to Spanish/English dictionaries, but the visual aspect of this dictionary makes it useful in the library.

Accessibility/Diversity: The school serves a significant number of ELL students, several of which are speak Spanish. For students who are struggling to learn English and teachers who are struggling to understand these students a Spanish/English visual dictionary can be very helpful. Archambault, A. & Corbeil, J. (2006). My First Spanish/English Visual Dictionary. Austin, TX: Firefly Books.

Citation by: Kelly Bowles

Type of Reference: Dictionary

Call Number: Ref 463

Content/Scope: A dictionary specifically targeted to a younger audience, Grades K-4, who are developing readers in english and/or spanish. The dictionary has over 1600 terms and 1300 realistic illustrations all organized in 36 themes, including "clothing," "colors and shapes," "dinosaurs," "space," and "sports."

Accuracy/Authority/Bias: The authors of this volume have previously written several other dictionaries together. The dictionary comes most highly recommended by H.W. Wilson's Children's Core Collection, and having been published in 2006 the original text is up-to-date.

Arrangement/Presentation: Arrangement is alphabetical, but organized around 36 different themes that children experience in their lives. There are two indexes, one english and one spanish, and the spanish terms include gender. Each theme has a double-page spread with illustrations related to the theme. English words are in bold with Spanish word underneath. However, there is no pronunciation guides or other explanatory text.

Relation to other works: There are not many options for bilingual picture dictionaries. In a country that is rapidly becoming more eclectic in language, it is important for all schools to meet our ELLs at a most basic level.

Accessibility/Diversity: The illustrations include a diverse population, and the language incorporates both english and spanish words to reach a wider variety of students.

I was hoping for more words in this visual dictionary. There were some words I expected to be common enough to be contained in it, but they weren't, so I don't think it made 4 stars, but I would give it 3 1/2.
