Assigned to her first big case, apprentice investigator Cybil Quindt goes undercover for a wealthy industrialist who suspects insider theft. Cybil soon learns her client is right. The company is losing tens of thousands of dollars a month to someone clever enough to hide the trail. Cybil may be inexperienced, but she nows how to play it cool. Even so, she can't stop one curious employee from tumbling to her death. Murder or accident?
The answer seems clear when Cybil then finds the company's chief accountant shot dead in the conference room. And when a third victim turns up, she's wondering if she's stirred up more trouble than a greenhorn can handle. Uncovering a scheme of blackmail, greed and foul play, she pursues a killer, knowing her first case might just become her last….
I did not care for this book. The characters were not believable. The protagonist, Cybil Quindt, has zero training as a detective but nonetheless sleuths around and should be dead many times over for a bunch of the dumb things she did. Too many characters, too much going on. No clean story line developed that I cared about.
Murder/mystery/suspense. Cybil Quindt is working for her uncle as an investigator. This is her first case and she goes undercover for a wealthy industrialist, he suspects someone may be stealing from the company. Soon an employee ends up dead, also the chief accountant is found shot dead. The suspect list is growing and then a third victim surfaces.
Cybil is facing personal problems, adjusting to living alone after the death of her son and separation from her husband. While facing these problems, she plunges ahead to uncover a scheme of blackmail, greed and ultimately murder.
Fast paced, page turning all night read. Twists, turns and surprises add to the suspense. I really enjoyed this.
A mystery with a likeable investigator with just enough of a shadowed past to keep the conflict going. With a requisite number of dead bodies and a sufficiently evil bad guy, this was an enjoyable mystery.
Looking at a my pile on my desk, I think it's time to catch up on my reviews. I just kept on reading and stacking them om my desk. I thought I would start with this basic and enjoyable whodunnit story. The main character, Cybil, is my kind of character. She is funny, charming, and times confusing. As Mayr weaves Cybil throughout the story is fantastic, making this tale hard to put down. Leaving the reader wanting, and she fills that with a roller coaster ride from the beginning to the end. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.
I was happy with this book. Not many stories have an "Oma" in the story. I enjoyed the way the main character took the time to think about what was happening and not have it all come to her in a flash as sometimes happens in mysteries. Reason was strong with this one..... to paraphrase someone else. I look forward to the next one. I recommend.
A Timely Alibi was a really condensed mystery involving insider theft. There were gaps in the story. Suspects are being killed left and right. This is the first case for an inexperienced apprentice investigator.
I'm calling this a cozy mystery. Yes there was more than one murder and the description of Cybil Quindt (main character) getting sick after finding a body is quite clear, but it's a very easy read.
This is a series for Cybil Quindt. A woman whose son died earlier and is separated from her husband Luke, a doctor. She is working for her uncle as a PI.
This is Cybil's first big case. She is to go undercover for a wealthy industrialist who thinks the money stolen is an inside job. Cybil finds that it has to be an inside job, but as she investigates her main suspect ends up dead. Others working for the company also turn up dead.
In the end of course she finds out who is taking the money and who is also responsible for the deaths.
This book was just ok for me. Kind of a cozy little mystery, likeable main character, but it just wasn't very exciting. It did keep me guessing until the revelation of the killer, which I guess is one of the hallmarks of a good mystery. However, the ending was just strange, like it was tying up a loose end having to do with one of the murders, but was really just a red herring. One of those "That's it?" kind of endings.
Overall, an easy read but not an edge-of-your-seat one.
A quick mystery that was intriguing. There were many aspects that I wanted to be more developed--questions that were not answered. But the author did have me engaged in the mystery so it was good in that respect.
A first time investigator finds herself looking into corporate theft that leads to three consecutive murders. A quick, easy read. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes murder, suspense, and intrigue.
