A scholar’s history of Taoism. Palmer oscillates between discussing meticulous details such as Lao Tzu’s real name and grand claims about how a single shamanistic culture spread from Siberia to China and North America. It also devotes a lot of time to the more arcane aspects of Taoism such as immortality, metaphysics, deities, etc.

If you want to approach Taoism as a practitioner, there is no substitute for the Tao Teh Ching
