I Found this book in our Italian apartment. Some kind English reader had left it behind. Not usually my kind of reading - rich man meets poor girl, they marry and numerous problems insue but it was a great vacation read.
This was a good story and gives a great history lesson about mid 19thc New York City, both the world of the social elite and those who were (a lot) less fortunate. Society, tenement life, the bigotry against the Irish (not a pretty story) as well as the historic places and events of the time give a great atmospheric effect, like stepping back in time.
As for the H and h, they have their HEA, but it sure was a tough road to get there, and this isn't one of those long separation stories, as they're married almost from the start. But what Maura goes through time and again, the disappointments and heartache will make your own heart want to break. But she has plenty of stamina and courage, and fights for the causes she believes in, despite opposition from the husband she loves so much.
And Alexander isn't always worthy of that love, by a longshot! He does plenty to hurt her, and though he does make up for it all later (and there's a bit of groveling, too) still I think most will agree that he needed a good kick in the butt more than once, or maybe a toss out the window would have been better. He redeems himself, but in the meantime, you'll feel like belting him one, as he could have used a black eye (or two)!!
There are a lot of other characters to make this a real entertaining book, I recommend it.
