Do you know what is the biggest hotel in the world? It is the First World Hotel, at Genting Highlands, Malaysia.
It is a full story about Lim Goh Tong, published 3 years before he passed away in 2007.
For those who want to discover, the history of Genting and its distinguish tourism products created by the company, make this book as your kick-start.
Lim Goh Tong resembles an entrepreneur who never wanted to lose opportunities. From his migration from Anxi, China to Malaya; until his idea to create a tourism place on top of a mountain - without his ideas, he cannot be one of the top richest men in Malaysia during his life.
As a person with, full of ideas, he never got affected by people that surrounded him, that doubted his idea of the birth of Genting. He still continues his dream to create something different - which is a trait of an entrepreneur. He knows, he has no competition during his venture for Genting. That is why he still strong with his determination in creating Genting. No one, nobody, will stop him.
Impressed with his talent in developing Genting Highlands! Even now, i have the question in my mind, how he did it??? Nice to read, simple english; cons = many facts was repetitive from one chapter to another chapter.
How inspiring and a masterpiece. Tan Sri said he was an introvert person at the early of the book, but look, how he developed an empire, a successful business. When a lot of people including his friends didn't believe in him when he want to develop Genting Highland from a jungle-covered mountain and now becoming one of the top tourist resort.
I inspire with his determination, hardworking, and courage in him. Tan Sri Lim said he can not sighing that life is so unpredictable. But somehow, many things in life seem to be predestined and one has no choice but to take them as they come along.
Along his journey in developing Genting Highland, he learnt to become more optimistic, positive and assertive in shaping his own future. Of all the things that he has picked up from the great hardships, the most valuable is that he learnt to be the master of his own destiny.
I love how this book end when dawn broke over Gunung Ulu Kali at the morning, the incorrigible workaholic in Tan Sri Lim nudged him and said: "Hey, get up. It's a brand new day. Get cracking!" But he just stretched and said: "Don't you know that Kok Thay is now the new man at the helm?".
I love the ending of this book
"It is a wonderful feeling going into retirement knowing that when I wake up in the morning, the old pal in me would say: 'Relax, everything's in good hands"
As a Millenial, we’ve been way too focus on self-help / fiction books as we speak. But this time I’ve decided to read something different, a biography of a well-known man, Lim Goh Tong, the founder of Genting.
I was inspired by his hard work from the beginning, not knowing that he migrated from China to Malaysia, I thought the creator of Genting was someone from Malaysia 😂. His dedication, beliefs and unending courage to build from 0 ground up is amazing.
This is one of the most inspirational biography that tells the story of Lim Goh Tong from himself.

Short and sweet account of a once-in-a-generation business titan. What impressed me was his business acumen despite with little education. His ability to maneuver in business deals and his foresight to turnaround those deals will definitely serve as a guidance in future. Nevertheless, I am proud to be the shareholder of your establishment. Thank You for contributing so much, in term of tax revenue and tourism to our country.
A good number of pages of the Genting journey. I'm a bit disappointed of GT not going into details on how he close deals, ideas that run before successfully secured the negotiations and what his exact vision throughly for the future. All is just a breeze through, I guess that is what we Chinese called it '对外不漏' (one does not share with outsiders).
Apprentice can only secretly glance while the master works.
- A general view of how he went from construction workers to his Genting Empire. - How people thought he was crazy when having the "Genting Idea" and some of his ideas too. - What're the traits he has. - I also found that negotiations and communication also have a huge impact. How he negotiates with key persons in Malaysia, sellers, and also communicates with his peers and business partners.
When I was traveling back and forth to Malaysia, I picked up this book and learned how an emigrant from Southern China built an empire throughout Southeast Asia. Very inspiring.
After reading this book, Genting Highlands had made me feel more tied into it. Lim Goh Tong was such a great man, went through so many times such as the Japanese Occupation in Malaya and the difficulty of him trying to communicate in Malaya as he hardly can speak any Malay Language.
And surely this book is so deep into his life even before Genting Highlands were even there. He was originally from Fujian Province in China, he came all the way to Malaya just to look for a better life, left his family members behind in China. After going through so much, he had planned to create the enormous or impossible Genting Highlands at least for the decade he was at, the roads that connects to Genting Highlands are brutally all hand worked without big modern machineries.
Unfortunately, he died at the age of 89. This is a very good story of a successful & very determined businessman.
Besides that, the book is originally translated to English from Chinese, there are alot of stuff I don't really understand but I'm fine with that.
A short and fun read. He gives a broad idea of how he succeeded in building Genting into the successful company that it is today. Don’t expect him to go into details though, the contents of this book are general. The book doesn’t reveal much about his management techniques, but it does reveal his journey in building Genting.
An overall fun read, but if you’re looking to learn management strategies, you’ll have to look elsewhere.
"I believe that to succeed in business, one has to be what the Chinese say 'dan da xin xi', be bold but cautious. Once a decision is madewith sound reasoning, the rest is hard work, determination and perseverance to see it through to fruition." - Lim Goh Tong
Interesting biography to read... How true about 'Uncle Lim', that is uncertain! Many said that he has killed many for the land he made famous now... Hmmmm...
"I have learnt to be the master of my own destiny." (Lim Goh Tong, My Story: Lim Goh Tong, Page 13)
Enjoyable autobiography of billionaire Lim Goh Tong. He left China and came to Malaysia. He worked at odd jobs and then started taking all the opportunities available to him. One of the first was buying and selling earth moving equipment. He then got into construction, plantations, then building his most famous Genting Highlands. He was ridiculed by his friends that his dreams of this hotel would fail; however, he was not deterred and it became a very successful in bringing locals and foreigners. The secret to the success of this hotel is the cool climate not found elsewhere.
Lim Goh Tong shares his struggles and successes as he built his companies. It seemed good luck followed him throughout his life. He claims this was due to a god of fortune of some kind; however, I think this is false. It was due to his hard work and those under him.
At the end of the book, he shares about the health problems he has had and passing the torch to his son. He did this on December 31, 2003. He died about 4 years later. At the same time he passed the control of his companies to his son, he wrote and published this book.
He had a great personality and great sense of humour. I found myself laughing out loud at times as I read this book. Goodread 5/5.
