William Sims Bainbridge is Staff Associate for the Management and Planning Division of Social and Economic Sciences at the National Science Foundation. He is the author of many books, including The Sociology of Religious Movements .
Intereting info, but the author seemed way too gracious towards the cult. He seems to be a convert himself, referring to anti-cult organizations fighting child abuse as "persecuting" the cult and he calls "flirty fishing" ie women acting as prostitutes for Jesus, a process of women "sharing their love with lonely men as an example of god's unconditional love" clearly not a guy playing with a full deck. I have a couple of exposes of this cult that I am sure will sing a much different tune than the rosy picture he portrays of them. It was interesting to read for perspective though.
I am not having very good luck with books this week. From page 2: "The teenagers gave the raiders Christian witness, telling them they were unwittingly involved in religious persecution and projecting a confidence during this horrible episode that could only have come from profound faith in God."
I tapped out immediately following this sentence. I came here for objectivity, not a fanatically religious cult apologist.
