I don't generally enjoy books on writing. Most writers, when they write about writing, are dull.
But this is a book about thinking. That I enjoy. As I read, I was reminded of the Terry Pratchett Admonition, which is thus: There are books of magic, and there are magical books. Magical books are those that don't necessarily make things go boom in the real world, but make things go boom inside a person's own skull. This collection of essays, stories and whatnot ranks among the best collections of thinking-pieces I've read in a long while.
Why?
They made things go boom inside my own skull.
I've got a writing workshop to deliver in a few weeks, and have been struggling with it, until I read this book. Now I feel I've got a better grip on helping budding writers interpret how they see their universe, and how they can get their universe on paper.
