Lawrence A. Pervin was professor emeritus of psychology at Rutgers University. Author of nine books on the subject of personality psychology, he was a clinical psychologist, psychotherapist, and lifetime Giants fan.

A very useful book for those who are into research in the field of personality. However, if you have no idea about it and you are looking for philosophical viewpoints, this is not the right book. It is a textbook basically for those who have the idea of the subject matter and would like to take their knowledge and width of understanding to the next level. The updated edition is more useful.

Το εξης παραδοξο με αυτο το πανεπιστημιακο βιβλιο ειναι οτι το εχω διαβασει 3 φορες γιατι μια καλη ψυχη με εχει κοψει παρόλο που εχω εντρυφησει για τα καλα( θεωρουσε οτι αντεγραφε ολο το αμφιθεατρο επειδη ηταν πολυ κοντα στο βιβλιο αυτα που γραφαμε ΚΑΙ ΤΙΣ 3 ΦΟΡΕΣ). Οποτε το αγαπω και το μισω αυτο το βιβλιο, ειναι καλογραμμενο και σου δινει μια εγκυρη και χορταστικη αποψη πανω σε ολες της θεωριες προσωπικοτητας και την εξελιξη τους.

This textbook is a mouthful. It's just page after page of text in fine print. It looks intimidating, but is quite well written. As a student, you get just about enough on the subject of personality theories. Also, there's enough references to contemporary research.
A bad thing about this book is that it takes a few chapters to get into its structure. For me it did, at least. Once you grasp it, you understand the authors' grand plan, but before that you may wonder why the book is structured the way it is.

Σαν περιεχόμενο είναι καλό αλλά πραγματικά η δομή του άθλια. Δεν έχει συνοχή, οι ορισμοί στα κεφάλαια είναι με αλφαβητική σειρά αντί με σειρά εμφάνισης ώστε να έχει όντως ρόλο ανακεφαλαίωσης. Η σύνοψη κάθε κεφαλαίου δεν βοηθάει καθόλου. Οι υποενότητες δεν έχουν συνοχή πετάγεται από τον έναν στον άλλον και στο τέλος δεν ξέρουμε ποιος είπε τι. Κρίμα γιατί είναι από τα ελάχιστα στο είδος του.

Εξαιρετικό βιβλίο για την εισαγωγή στα θέματα που σχετίζονται με την κατανόηση της προσωπικότητας στην Ψυχολογία. Έχει ξεκάθαρη δομή και παρουσίαζει με άρτιο τρόπο τα βασικά ευρήματα γύρω απ'το συγκεκριμένο θέμα. Οι συγγραφείς έδωσαν ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στο να καλλιεργήσουν έναν κριτικό και ολιστικό τρόπο θεώρησης των συγκεκριμένων θεωριών καθώς και των ερωτημάτων που άπτονται αυτών.

A solid introduction to the subject of Personality Psychology. I liked the book's structure and how it presents and summarizes the basic findings and research on the topic. I appreciate that the writers really tried to pass on a critical and holistic way of thinking about these theories and the questions related to them.

Read for : SS5757 Personality Theories and Assessment

It's one of the widely used textbooks of this field* but both the strength and weakness of Pervin is that the author would like to focus on a smaller set of theories/approaches with more coverage on modern research literature. If you have done an introductory course on psychology, few theories are new here and the presentation is ...just a standard textbook. But the addition of a hypothetical case study,Jim, and how his personality can be assessed and interpreted with different tests and perspectives are of substantial assistance to all students.

Just remember to go to the student companion site for their online quizzes.

If you prefer to read more theorists, try Feist. If you prefer to know more application, try Burger.

*The 3rd, from The Open Syllabus Project. More like the 2nd as the 1st is not exactly a textbook(Maslow's work). The other is Funder, probably one of the more engaging textbooks.
