Points out that some people are "different" because they are blind or deaf, have a speech disorder, are mentally handicapped, or have some other disability; but, in even more ways, they are "like" you.
This book talks about ways that some people may be different than you and other people. It firsts talks about was handicaps. Which means the issue or disability is temporary. The next difference was being deaf. Which means one cannot hear and that they have to listen with their eyes. The next difference was being blind. Which is like always being in the dark. There are different types of blind that people may have. The next difference is being both blind and deaf, and how one might hear and see things. The next difference was a learning disability or speech disorders. It talked about how things might work. The next two things were physically handicap and mentally handicap. Then it talked about how you can help someone who is handicap.
I gave this book 5 stars, I think that this book could help teach kids about these things and have more understanding. This could teach kids that even though some people may be a little bit different, they can also be just like you.
The book Different and Alike by Nancy McConnell is not about an individual disability, but rather highlights a plethora of them such as blindness and deafness as well as mentally and physically handicapped. McConnell explains that even though there are things that set people apart, there are even more things that bring people together. This book teaches typical children to include children who have disabilities, but it is just as important that children with disabilities feel accepted by their peers. This book should be in all teachers' classrooms for students to read, or to be read aloud to them because it contains good information that everyone should know. The illustrations help young readers to see that sometimes if one has a disability, they do not look much different from anyone else and Duell does a great job at this
This book is super awesome for anyone who is struggling with a handicap or disability. It has so many different things in it, and it is so informational! I love this book and i think it would be good for someone who is going through these kinds of things because then they would have some support.
This book gets five stars because it an awesome, supportive book and it would also help parents help their children.
This book provides a lot of valuable information about disabilities and things people should do to help and not do since it is not helpful for the person or makes them not feel good. The content is lengthy but informative and simple for people to follow. There is actual Braille in the book as well so that anyone can feel and understand what someone blind would do. Also, there is the sign language alphabet for students to practice spelling out words.
I gave this book a rating of four stars because it provides a lot of valuable information and I loved seeing the sign language alphabet and Braille in the book. Also, it would help students learn and understand the concepts that the book explains.
This book is great! It is such an informative book about all types of people and their disabilities. It gives children a chance to learn about others who may be blind, (actually provides a page with brail on it), deaf, learning disabilities, speech disorders, etc. This is a great book to present to any class to help them understand how everyone is different but alike at the same time.
Because this book is fairly old, it has some words that may seem derogatory. For example, it talks about mentally retarded people. Although this was the term that was used when the book was written, it is not the politically correct term now, and may come off as offensive.
