At age 9, he was reading Tolkien and Stephen King. He wrote his first novella at age 10. If you want to read the same old formulaic pop lit, don't bother with Joseph's fiction. The novels of Joseph Duncan are challenging, subversive and fantastical, merging genres and pushing the boundaries of propriety and good taste. If you have an aversion to dark subject matter, gratuitous sex and extreme violence, stay far away from Joseph's books. Far. Far. Away!

This would be a three-star book but my love for the zombie apocalypse makes me give this an extra star.
This is a fun fast read filled with your normal everyday zombie affair. The main protagonist Mort is a very likable real and at times funny intelligent guy. I really like that Mort wasn't afraid to make fun of himself, his weight, and his stature and even as looks.
Mort's best friend Cactus Pete is a great-looking MovieStar type guy who was also a fun addition to the cast.
As normal, the story starts out with the end of the world with the falling of humanity to the undead. We are given a little backstory in that a virus they called the Z virus is what leads to the rising dead. The zombies in this book are both fast runners and slow shufflers and they're called Deadheads. One interesting passage explains a lot:
"The sidewalks still crawled with humanity, an ant-like parade. Men in business suits, marching as if to work. Mothers and their children, dressed in spring pastels, tramping hand in hand like they were going down to the local park to swing and ride on the teeter – totters. Even teenagers, all anti-establishment in their rock 'n roll T-shirts and torn jeans, loitering outside their favorite headshop. Though the Armageddon Phage had turned 99.9% of the human population to brain eating zombies, it's rotting victims retained a faint, sad echo of each person's previous personality. Their habits and mannerisms. Sometimes they're cunning."
There are three major plot twists and at times I thought they were going to be fatal flaws. These twists turns out to really make the book cool and interesting.
I enjoyed the writing style of Rod Redux and look forward to reading more from him. I recommend this book to all lovers of zombies and post-apocalypse genre.

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS IVE EVER READ! Mort is such a fast paced page turner with twists and turns you wont see coming with the end of the world and the so-called angels that turn out to be ( ). Cant tell you it would ruin the story. But this books has Vampires, Zombies and characters you'll never forget and of course Mort who you cant help but root for, and love! As usual Mr. Joseph Duncan gives us another fantastic book filled with twists and characters you'll love!

Best zombie book I've read in years!
I would love to see a film of this book! In fact this is how the story unfolded for me. It was like watching a film! Joseph Duncan is a great talent, make no mistake. I'm surprised I haven't stumbled upon his books yet, but I am so glad that that I have! Move aside King, Robinson, Koontz, Mayberry, Rice, and others. There's a new gunslinger in town. He's a kick ass writer that doesn't pull any punches and will make cringe and laugh out loud within the same page. Highly recommend.

Could not put it down!
This book was amazing! I couldn't put it down. It's been a while since I've been this invested in a story. I recommend this to anyone who loves zombies. It's the best zombie book I've read since World War Z. The characters are charming although there are hints of misogyny. The author gets into the mind of each of the characters which is a rare feat.

Awesomeness! New twist! WOW
Best new twist in the zombie apocalypse story ever! I've never even thought about vampires put into this AWESOME story I'm astounded. My mind is blown! Wow just WOw! You have opened my mind to several possibilities. WOW!

Very entertaining..

I really like this novel and the way Rod Redux writes. The story recounts the adventures of Mort (a chubby, slow, nerdish sidekick with considerable intelligence) and Cactus Pete (a strong, fast, handsome, but very dumb leading man type) as they try to escape a zombie ridden city before the nuclear power plant melts down. Along the way they pick up Dao-Ming (a Chinese-American stunt driver) and her sister, and deal with a serial killer hit man. Part of the story line revolves around some very interesting zombie killing angels that may or may not be the protector beings that the humans think they are. The incredibly funny relationship and dialog between Mort and Pete alone was worth the admission price of the book, which was only $2.99 on my Kindle. If you are looking for something beyond the typical zombie formula novel, and something that will make you laugh out loud as you read it, while still giving you that zombie dread feeling, then please give Rod Redux's "Mort" a try. I'm betting you'll become as much of a fan as I am...

I absolutely love the author! The story was engulfing form start to finish I found myself laughing out at the dialogue between the main characters Mort and Cactus Pete. The survival instinct during a zombie outbreak, with out the same tired plot drive kept me interested. I love the way the story start with the human side of how it all begins and these two men have aligned and manage to retain their sense of humor and find inventive way dispatch the dead permanently... I was thrilled at the concept of how the Phage was generated and the evolution of the zombies. I had the keep reading. Joseph Duncan is an a

I loved this book. I wasn't sure I was ready after World War Z to read a poorly written everyone dies in the end typical zombie novel but this was great. Easy to love imperfect characters expertly drawn made it a fantastic read. Interesting twist handled in a way that made you want more. It is a horror novel after all so it's not for the weak. Read it. Read it now!

This book felt very much, to me, like some random guy decided to try writing pulp horror novels and turned out by chance to be great at it. There is nothing particular polished about his writing, and the story is interesting but not awe inspiring, but the book itself was just really fun to read. Duncan just tells a good story.

I really enjoyed this story. Mort and Pete were a hoot. The twist was a little predictable, but handled in a way that seemed fresh. That may not make much sense, but I can't say any more without spoiling the ending. Highly recommended for those who like zombie books with a touch of humor.

Just finished reading "Mort". Thought that it wasa good Z book. The author spent time developing the characters well. The last 25% of the book I thought the storyline really picked up. The ending really surprised me--I didn't see it coming. Worth a try!

A wonderful zombie book that follows the overweight Mort. As Mort gets in shape by running from the horde of zombies he falls in love to have it taken away. Where zombies out number the living and vampires appear to us as angels. A wonderful read for any zombie lover.

This just wasn't for me. I quit reading right around the time they found the pimp with the zombie whores chained up..... I'm pretty sure you can figure out where it went from there. GROSS and RIDICULOUS! Very disappointed.

Just love the characters and the surprising twists to Rod Redux's books!! I have only one more book left that he has written and am going to be disappointed when I don't have another to look forward to reading! I hope he comes out with a new book soon!

Pro: For such a slim volume the characters are suprisingly fullsome. Mort & Pete make for a very endearing post-apocalyptic odd-couple.
Con: Reads like an abridged copy. Rather wish the author had taken the duo for a longer spin.

Awsome novel
I really enjoyed this book. Some parts were downright hysterical while other parts almost brought a tear to my eye. The characters were well developed and the storyline kept me wanting more. A must read for any zombie enthusiast.
