The Waste Land & the Four Quartets
These are masterly readings, by renowned thespian Paul Schofield, of two substantial works of poetry by T.S. Eliot. The Wasteland, first published in 1922, is one of Eliot's most influential works and has long been on the syllabus for A-Level English Literature.
The Four Quartets consists of four long poems, first published between 1935 and 1942. They are linked by common themes, and are individually 'Burnt Norton', 'East Coker', 'The Dry Salvages' and 'Little Gidding'.

📖 This poetry is a life essential. You need it in your post-apocalyptic boat or 4x4 or backpack along with your Jack Wolfskin water bottle. You need it under your post-apocalyptic pillow. With your post-apocalyptic coffee.

Poesia che dipinge con tutte le gradazioni più scure la nostra realtà, la città che si trasfigura e non è più luogo di incontro e di casa ma mostro soffocante, che avvelena e disperde. La disperazione si trasforma in farsa grottesca, dove solo la poesia è l'immaginazione è un'illusione di salvezza .

La terra desolata
Un cumulo di frante immagini è ciò che mi ha trasmesso questo poema. Sono squarci di vita dove non c'è un coerente collegamento fra le varie parti che lo compongono, ma una sequenza di sguardi, che potrebbe essere infinita, su un mondo fatto di solitudini.
Siamo esseri prigionieri di noi stessi, senza via di fuga, intrappolati nella nostra mente egocentrica.
La terra desolata è un testo di difficile comprensione che ha bisogno di molte riletture per provare a intaccare la superficie di quello che ha da dire.
Quattro quartetti
Quattro quartetti è un testo profondamente filosofico in cui il tema fondamentale è il tempo e il modo in cui la nostra concezione del tempo influisce sulle nostre vite. Ci sono chiare influenze buddiste e tutto il poema è pervaso da una marcata spiritualità.
Cercare di afferrare il tempo è un po' la nostra condanna. Tentare, vivere, amare sono le cose su cui dovremmo concentrarci.
Non siamo il frutto solo della nostra vita, siamo profondamente interconnessi con le generazioni passate. La loro vita è la nostra e plasma la nostra esperienza.

I don’t know if it’s reading Eliot at the tail end of a global pandemic or what, but this was the first time I actually felt moved by this poetry. The reading was exquisite.

C’è un tempo per vivere e un tempo per costruire e un tempo per vivere e generare e un tempo perché il vento infanga.
Sulla strada di un mondo simile all’altro che scandaglia il tempo passato, si scovano parole che si credevano perdute. Thomas Eliot fece di questo elemento, questa ricerca, un’esperienza che stilò questo bellissimo poemetto. Dalla tasca, discretamente, senza accorgersene, prese una manciata di parole, suoni e frasi che tenne nascoste per una manciata di anni. Li compose poi in un poemetto considerato da molti come la delusione di una generazione, domandosi cosa avrebbe dovuto fare o meno l’uomo per avere una visione migliore, più chiara del mondo circostante. Quando mi avvicinai lentamente per sondare questo luogo presi una manciata di frasi, reggendo il mio blocnotes preferito, in un gesto quasi volontario che mette a posto qualcosa dentro di noi. La mia anima, quella dell’autore e di chi legge. Ed è ciò che ho fatto. La mia coscienza e quella dell’autore, anche se per un tempo troppo breve, si incontrarono, si scontrarono fin quando il mio spirito fu invaso da una strana luce, una luce accecante, calda, confortevole quasi un sorriso di soddisfazione. Leggere questo poemetto mi ha reso felice, non so spiegarmelo, nonostante esuli qualunque aspetto o momento entusiasta. Ma io mi sono sentita importante, coinvolta.
Questa landa desolata in cui sono sprofondata raccontò l’esperienza dell’autore osservando la fine di un percorso bensì la strascicata conseguenza di ciò che si fa per raggiungere un obiettivo, quando l’emozioni vivono fra le rovine del tempo, in cui il futuro è una canzone svanita, una Rosa Reale schiacciata fra le pagine di un libro che non è mai stato aperto. La fine della seconda guerra mondiale aveva indotto Eliot così come tanti altri autori a portarsi dentro voci, intonazioni, evocazioni letterarie, classiche in cui si aspira a scovare la verità, riferimento esplicito a quello degli antichi poemi medievali, nonché territorio privo di vita, surreale e mortale che per ottenere il santo Graal dovettero attraversare sentieri insidiosi. Si parla di primavere che non arrivano in cui lo squallore e l’alienazione alla vita moderna subiscono un netto cambiamento. Forse l’ennesimo lamento di un uomo che rifiuta di vivere secondo il concetto di spazio derivante dalla visione scientifica del mondo, con la sensazione dell’assurdità della società umana vista come una fantasmagoria dell’osservatore totalitario. Il tutto in un paesaggio così grigio, crudo, inutile, maleodorante le cui strade sono popolate da ombre di morti anziché di vivi. L’ossessione della contaminazione, la paura di privare l’uomo dalla natura e da ciò che annienta o annichilisce qualunque intento dell’uomo di sopraffare il prossimo, la misticità della parola si dipana attraverso una vana inesistenza e condensandosi in un eterno presente metafisico divenendo quasi musicale. Musicale così come l’intera struttura del poema.
La terra desolata conferisce quei giusti ingredienti per osservare un mondo ostico e crudele in cui ci si affanna ad accanirsi l’uno contro l’altro anziché osservare quella luce che la religione stessa dovrebbe conferirci. Nonostante pregno di laicità illustra un particolare momento in cui una civiltà e le sue forze verso il prossimo si esauriscono. Il romanzo ha vasti richiami alla religione ma l’autore fu incapace di concepire questo fattore in quanto indirizzato allo sfacelo, al caos, alle continue lotte fra gli uomini. Elaborando mediante forme simbolistiche elementi come l’ateismo, lo stoicismo nel credere possano esserci delle speranze che si possa rinascere dalle stesse ceneri. Ci si aggrappa invece a una religione che non dà compromessi, a qualcosa che non ci induca a scegliere, suggerendo la via del raccoglimento e dell’umiltà. Spiegazione? Lo stesso autore fu vittima delle disgressioni belliche dei primi anni del 900, e in un periodo fosco della sua vita scrisse queste poesie come un rispetto non solo per gli altri ma soprattutto per se stesso. E ne La terra desolata ciò è preso sul serio in cui l’aridità, il ristoro, la vastità di sentimenti forti e inspiegabili sono un epifania del profano attraverso cui l’autore condanna eccezionali intrusioni della realtà umana, individuali e collettivi. Attraverso la parola bisognerebbe costruire uno spettro di totalità che restituisca la totalità del Verbo – Suono originario. Sapienza e poesia, vita e devastazione così si intrecciano. Le parole sono già vissute ed evocano ricordi in cui l’emozioni sono meno vivide e graffianti, la vità è un po’ più sorella della morte. Ed è da questo distacco dalla vita, senza rinunciare alla bellezza e alla gioia del dionisiaco – creare e distruggere – condannando l’uomo ad un inesorabile fine.
Avvulso in un aura che sfugge a qualunque definizione precisa di amore, comprensione, felicità, ma il cui eco è stato a dir poco inconfondibile, così diverso da tutto ciò che ho letto sino a ora, La terra desolata è un pometto amoroso – in senso lato – scritto con un eleganza e un tran tran di parole che vibrano nella quotidianità del giorno, nella bellezza dei falsi miti, nella contaminazione dei sogni, nell’arte della scrittura in cui si convive con le tendenze profane di una società circostante nel quale vi sono accesi rancori, rimpianti e una visione tendenzialmente atea di colui che ci sovrasta. Una serie di immagini sciorinate apparentemente senza un filo logico in cui le stesse parole divengono semantiche, parlano al cuore con pazienza e parsimonia, si sistemarono in un angolo del mio cuore per poi permeandolo completamente.

This is the first time I have read Eliot and his Four Quartets, though I have known some lines from them that became very important to me. I love much poetry, but found these difficult to read--there was vocabulary that I had to look up, ideas that were unclear--and yet I recognised ideas from the Buddha's teachings. For example, “In order to arrive at what you do not know you must go by a way which is the way of ignorance.” This is "Beginner's Mind," experiencing something with no preconceived ideas about it, just being open to what happens, what is observed.
Another is this description of ongoing impermanance and change:
“You are not the same people
who left that station
Or who will arrive at any terminus”
And my favorite, which I shared at my husband's memorial:
“We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.”
I will read these poems again and hope to understand more.
Another is this description of ongoing impermanance and change:
“You are not the same people
who left that station
Or who will arrive at any terminus”

Scofield's reading is sheer brilliance. Too moans about it, one minor, one major. The minor moan is that dreadful little set of piano chords used to introduce the readings. The major one is the editing out of the final line of "Little Gidding". How on earth can someone with material and performance of this quality be so dratted careless? It's like getting to the end of a symphony and missing out the final great chord. Aggggghh!

Today, a week before the beginning of the cruelest month of April, I went for the first time to see the remains of my home that burned down in the Palisades Fire in January. I had seen pictures from other people and knew that it was a scene of complete destruction, like Dresden or Tokyo after the fire bombings, but today was the first day that I had seen it in person close up. I had to go today because the Army Corps of Engineers was beginning its debris clearance, so after today, not even the ashes of my home will remain.
I thought that reading this famous poem right before going to see my former home would give me an emotional and literary touchstone that could give more meaning to my experience. It did, but not in a good way. There are a few hints of hope and rebirth here, but it's largely bleak, a tale of disillusionment and sterility. The language, style and tone are masterful, though like many other readers I paused more than once to wonder what the heck it was really about. Mostly I let it flow over me. I haven't had quite the same experience with a book since I read The Gulag Archipelago on a trip to Hawaii in 1986 when I was mourning my father's death. The Gulag Archipelago is too long to ever read again, but this poem isn't, and I'm sure that there many depths that I missed on first reading, so I'll come back to this one again in a few years when my head is in a better place.

I'll admit, I chose to read T.S. Eliot's works just because I had exams coming up and I couldn't understand a thing of how all those stylistic features could come together to form one of the "best poems in the 20th century". It just looked like an awful mess of quotes, fragments and objective correlatives to me - let alone the fact that I didn't even know what they were.
So I saw it in the public library and borrowed it, and that opened my eyes. The Waste Land is a poem in five parts, it is a ritual to purge from all the problems of post-war society.
While reading, you feel the sense of hopelessness, spiritual sterility and incommunicability that the textbooks talk about. T.S. Eliot didn't use any symbols, yet his descriptions carry those feelings within themselves.
Also, it is not necessary to understand all those quotations that he used - especially those in other languages. They were not meant to be understood. It is meant to be cryptic, because that is an accurate portrayal of his perception of his surroundings, and of the way humans communicate with each other: something is always "lost in translation".
As for what regards Four Quartets, I didn't appreciate it as much because it belongs to the author's religious phase, and it is sometimes a bit too evident for my own taste. Despite that, it contains some amazing poems and some incredible verses: if you have an edition of
The Waste Land with Four Quartets at the end, I wouldn't ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist.
I hope this review can help someone clear up some ideas regarding these two works, or even better, motivate somebody to read them.

Loved listening to this audiobook; the narrator was phenomenal. I was deeply moved by the Four Quartets.

Eliot firma un classico della poesia modernista e non solo. Attraverso una moltitudine di personaggi e situazioni che ricorda "Foglie D'Erba" di Whitman (così come lo stile altmaniano che è però successivo) si viene a creare un forte affresco di desolazione in cui alla confusione linguistica si uniscono una serie di citazioni (prevalentemente letterarie e soprattutto bibliche) per raccontare un'universale situazione di catarsi fino alla pace finale.

Finished a line by line study of TS Eliot's Four Quartets for my next project at York University. So I find words I never thought to speak in streets I never thought I should revisit when I left my body on a distant shore. We cannot revive old factions, we cannot restore old policies or follow an antique drum.
