Sam Casey Mystery #2

Nothing Else Matters

Rate this book
Detective Sergeant Samantha Casey is back after her debut in When the Dead Speak. Suspended from the force after her last case, Sam is having a difficult time adjusting to unemployment. But there are more unsettling changes in her life than unemployment. When a staunch opponent of gambling is found murdered on a riverboat casino, Sam is hired by the owners to clear them of any involvement. The suspect is believed to be an assassin known as "Sparrow". Authorities can only identify him by the tattoo on the back of his hand. The deceased is carrying $50,000 in counterfeit money. Sparrow soon realizes the fee he was paid is counterfeit. Sparrow is one man you don't want to cross. Sparrow plays a cat-and-mouse game with Sam's young computer friend, Tim, and matches wits with Sam. Just who is Sparrow? Why does Sam have dreams of hot lights, unbearable pain, and bizarre torture techniques? And why does she keep hearing a strange mantra in her head--"Other than survival, nothing else matters?" Nothing Else Matters is a chilling mystery, with touches of humor and romance to lighten a dark and compelling plot. An excellent sequel in the Sam Casey series.

AKA -- LEE DRIVER -- Whenever my husband is asked to describe me in one word, he usually says "strange." I used to subscribe to Dr. J. Allen Hyneks's UFO reporter. And although I was a fan of Nancy Drew in my teens, I quickly segued to Stephen King and Dean Koontz. My interests are all over the place so it's no wonder I have been a car salesman, sales assistant, administrative assistant, seminar coordinator, and a casino dealer.
I write the Sam Casey series (think "Medium" with a Native American twist) which combines mystery with paranormal; the Chase Dagger series (under the pseudonym of Lee Driver) combines mystery with fantasy, horror, and sometimes sci-fi; and the Remy and Roadkill series (The Skull is for ages 11+), a traditional mystery. As a fan of all the CSI programs, I instilled each of the teens with a talent in forensics.
My books are available in the US, UK, and EU, as well as in audiobook, large print, and eBook formats. And for the month of July, Smashwords is running a special on eBooks for your summer beach reads. You can find my Sam Casey eBooks at www.smashwords.com/profile/view/Tooley and my Chase Dagger eBooks at www.smashwords.com/profile/view/leedr...

This book is a continuation of when the dead speak. It has all the same main characters and although you technically don't need to read the first book it makes more sense with some conflicts going on between the the main characters if you do.

The main plot however has nothing to do with with the first book and is way better ending. I really enjoyed this book bc you got to read from both the suspects point of view and the detectives point of view. It's not filed with cop talk or legal jargon either which makes it a good read. It was pretty suspenseful in what was going on and a little gory at times but added to the suspects state of mind. There were a few times I had to force myself to put the book down and go to bed.

You will NEVER see the ending coming and that is what made this book worth the read 100 times over. I love endings that are mind blowing and make me think back to all the clues in the book

An Emotional Roller Coaster!

This book moved me beyond words... and through an entire box of Kleenex to catch the flood of tears. A love story, a wrongly accused cop, and the inhumane construction of an assassin from a young soldier by usage of drugs, torture, and brainwashing.... a book to make you wonder how the humanity of a soul can flicker like an eternal candle despite all efforts to destroy and pervert it. A brilliant novel, Ms. Tooley, and I will be reading the entire series!

I was totally surprised at the ending of this book! I would never have guessed. I do like that Jake & Sam are where they are. I would not be surprised if Sam becomes a PI instead of working in the PD. I enjoyed reading about Abby & Alex. Love Tim!

Sam, Jake, Jackie and Carl are back, with a story that continues to build with each chapter. The pace so much better than the first story, you just keep turning the pages to learn the truth of the man known as Sparrow. Sparrow is a mercenary, who comes in to Sam's life due to the murder of a pastor on a gambling river boat. Jake won't allow Sam into his case, until Sam learns more about Sparrow through her native American gifts. The surprises are plentiful that changes everyone's lives, as the truth is learned about Sparrow and the hand the United States government played in his life. The characters are unique but likeable and the stories are intense, worth the read.

This book was a total surprise to me. I don't usually read plot lines like that. But I was hooked from the very beginning. Easy, full and heart-warming read. It looks like you really are close to the main characters, the amount of details given are delightfully picture-provoking.
Would move to the next book in the series and will try to catch up with the story lines. Oh, yes and the main character is such a lovely right up, very nicely done!

An outstanding read! I am enjoying the series with Detective Sergeant Samantha Casey and her family. Known only as "Sparrow", a killer for hire, you will be amazed how the story of him unfolds. The last sentence of this book is a zinger!

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads as a bonus with The Tunnel!

By all of my reading tastes, this series should not appeal to me. Somehow it is breaking the rule and I am enjoying it. There are too many “You’ve got to be kidding me” parts, but all in all not bad.
