When Marcus Moore Moved In

Rate this book
Americans are on the move-about one-sixth of the population, including thirteen million children, moves every year. In her lyrical prose and expressive pictures, Rebecca Bond deftly captures the initial mixture of apprehension and curiosity that many children feel upon arrival at their new home, but she also celebrates the joy of discovering a new neighborhood and meeting that first new friend on the block.

When Marcus Moore moved into his new neighborhood, nobody was there. He went searching for people but there was no one in sight! Then... "Tap! Ta-tap!"... the most remarkable girl went jump-roping by. Then bicycling by. Then she banged a makeshift drum. Marcus was too nervous to say anything before the girl disappeared. However, one day she came back while it was pouring rain outside, that is when Marcus had hope again, and they began to form a friendship with one another! The great sound repetition throughout the book makes it a great read-aloud book and the illustrations can tie children’s imaginations with what is really happening in the book. I would say that I would read this book to a 1st- 3rd grade class. The catchy rhyming and repeating on every page of “and at 44 MacDougal street when Marcus Moore moved in” makes the book fun for kids to read along too! The rich illustrations of a quaint Brooklyn neighborhood are perfect for the location of this story too! I enjoyed how all the neighbors came back at the end of the book and Marcus found a new friend!

I was not a fan of the style of illustration in this book, and the words didn't seem to flow well. I couldn't get into a good rhythm while I was reading it.

A book about being the new kid on the block. I love the Brooklyn New York Feel of the book (Which I liken to Sesame Street...that brownstone, front stoop sort of feel.

Marcus Moore...isn't Mark, or Marcus he is Marcus Moore. I thought that was different. Imagination and making friends!
