Similar to the first book (Mysterious Britain), a thematically arranged survey of weird and wonderful sites of every kind. The net is cast more widely this time and the text seems more credulous and less critical. Also no gazetteer. Outstanding photos, again.
standing stones/folklore/ancient leys/ circles/ archaic crosses/ carvings/ earthworks on hilltops/ancient buildings/ and ruins/ holy wells/ hill figures/ mazes/ ufos/ zodiacs/...well, what more can one ask for?
Interesting topic but written from a bizarre hippy Earth Energy/Ley-Lines/Magic angle of credulous nonsensical whimsy; not for the scientific or historic reader. Any questions regarding ancient sites are simply explained away using the same mantra of "it was earth energy/ley-lines..." which gets a bit tiresome.
Earth currents, stones and their powers, brilliant black and white illustrations and photos, a strange and monstrous serpent, giants, churches moved by night - paganism, restless stones and ancient rituals, fairies, witches, ghosts and UFOs, the fate of the desecrators... if you like old lores or folk horror this is the real compendium and source to all the topics to follow. Highly recommended!
