I’m desperate for more stories in the Clecanian universe, so when I saw a novella was (re)released, I was HYPED.
Maladek is trapped on the Sieliji planet after the events of Using Fejo. Katie was abducted from earth nearly fifteen years ago and has spent most of her time as a (willing) servant. After she is on a ship that is lured to crashland by the Sieliji song, the two try to escape the planet while fighting against the primitive urges of a newly awakened mating bond.
Maladek and Katie were perfect for each other. Despite being a shorter book in the series, there were a plethora of tender moments between them. It is indisputable that they both cared for the other’s wellbeing, and while they did fall in love quickly, it didn’t seem abrupt.
These books tend to have a bittersweetness about them. The humans who have been abducted left behind homes and lives, and it’s clear they miss them. Their pasts and families being not only acknowledged but also not being awful is so refreshing. These are fully-realized humans, y’all.
I love, love, LOVE this series, and I am eager and excited for any and all future additions.

⭐️ The perfect alien romance novella!!! I'm obsessed with Katie and Maladek!
I've read and listened to this so many times and I continue to love this story! Katie is a human who was abducted when she was a child, so her story is a bit different than the other women we've seen. And Maladek immediately get's his mating marks, which makes his story a bit different from the previous 5 as well. I also liked how both Katie and Maladek more or less immediately like each other and there isn't really any drama with their romance. Granted, that's probably because it's a novella, but it made their story low angst and high heat romance wise.

The heroine: Katie - Katie is one of the human women who were abducted from their homes and taken to an alien planet where a race of Clecanians wanted to use them in breeding experiments. When the Queen of the race found out about it, she saved the women and though they weren’t able to send the human women home, they are now living and working in Clecanian society. Katie works for a prince and is accompanying him on a galaxy cruise. Though her assignment is pretty dull. She basically had to follow him around and make sure his clothes remained wrinkle free and he looked perfect at all times.
The Hero: Maladek - he was a prisoner, being forced to do labor at an enemy prison mining camp. Often the guards would mistreat the prisoners, he wore collar that his captors could activate with electricity at any time. His captors had a hypnotic song which was worse than the electricity because he didn’t know what happened to him or what he was made to do while hypnotized.
The Story: When the prince decided the galaxy cruise was boring, they turned around to go back home. The prince didn’t even think that others onboard the cruise’s maiden voyage might not want to cut their trip short. They also had to take an alternative route back, since the prince decided to end the voyage along the edge of the alliance borders. When the ship is attacked, Katie is able to get many of the passengers, into cryopod lifeboats and eject them to the nearest planet. Though she was barely able to get to one herself and she ended up crash landing.
I have really loved this series because every book has been completely different than the ones before. I love the fact that each book isn’t just a different version of the one before. The character development and world building has been terrific in every book in this series. I enjoyed this story of Maledek and Katie’s escape from the fish-like aliens on a desert planet. It was original and filled with action and adventure.
This audiobook was told in multiple points of view via solo narration and was narrated by Stephen Dexter who is one of my favorite male narrators. He has a soft but deep voice and is very good at showing emotion through his voice and doing different voices for different characters. He does a great job on this book.

This short novel features Maladek, a mild antagonist in Using Fejo but turned good after he helped the main characters escape a prison planet. Now prisoner, he has to work in the mines, creating passages and finding valuable rocks. On the other side, we have Katie, a woman who had been abducted by aliens when she was only fifteen years old, over a decade ago. She was rescued by a kind species who offered her to buy her freedom by working her worth. When the ship of the Prince she works for crashes on the prison planet, she is the only one who isn't captured. And the only one who can attempt to save them all. But she won't do it alone. After infiltrating the prison, she finds Maladek, who promises to help her if she helps him get out of his cell first...
It was a fun little story. I was happy to know that Maladek was okay after his sacrifice in the previous book. He was quite mysterious and grumpy in Using Fejo but you could see he had a really soft side to him. In this short novel, he was absolutely besotted with Katie, longing for her proximity and her love. He was super protective and possessive. He couldn't help himself but purr every time she touched him or was close to him. He was the definition of a big teddy bear.
I really liked Katie. The fact that she lived so long in space made so she didn't have all those preconceptions with what was presented to her. After so many years, she had adapted to her new life and even felt like she belonged more in space, as she had spent half of her life there. She was sweet and brave, honest and accepting. After buying her worth, she decided to keep working for the royal family as they were kind to her, and mostly because she didn't know where to go. She had a strong need to find someone who would love her and be compatible with her. In the past, she had tried finding a mate, only to be met with disappointments. When she realizes she is attracted to Maladek, she worries a bit that they are not compatible but quickly find out that's definitely not the case.
They had a nice chemistry. It was a little bit of an instalove, mostly because Maladek's mating marks appeared right after he caught Katie's scent. Even before seeing her with his own eyes. He was ready to do anything for her to make her love him. It took a little bit more time with Katie but she was soon pretty charmed by Maladek. It was just a sweet love story between two fated mates, mixed with smut and some action.

She couldn’t make heads or tails of this guy—grunty and domineering one minute, then dropping bones at her feet like an eager hound the next.

I really enjoyed this novella - what a cute, fun and low angst read!
I loved the teamwork vibes (where they gotta work together to get off a prison planet) and the insta-lust that neither of them try to fight or hide. Maladek takes one sniff of his mate and his every instinct is to protect, care for and please her, and meanwhile Katie is just having a good time watching this hot sweaty alien dig through caves.
A great addition to the Clecanian series.

Mains: This is a M/F relationship between an alien hero and human heroine. I believe the heroine is bi – she was kidnapped by aliens at 15 and has had a variety of alien relationships, including those spoken of as female

Should I read in order?
I would because the series is great in order and flows together with layering of world building. But the fact that this is a novella and takes place off Clecania, you would probably be okay grabbing this one alone. I do think Maladek was a side character though in prior books so you might get some more depth for him in order.

My thoughts:
I’ll admit I was a touch distracted when I was listening to this one – but I did enjoy it! When I read the synopsis for it, I was worried it was going to go in a direction I didn’t like (I read another scifi novella that took place on a prison planet and it stressed me TF out….) but I really liked the set up here. I liked how they were together for most of the time once they met each other and I loved the survival themes and how protective the hero was. Overall a super fun read!

що мені подобається в цій серії в порівнянні з багатьма іншими книжками про інопланетян – так це адекватність: жодної дикості й звірства. вони ніби й інопланетяни, але такі схожі на людей, а ті відмінності, що є – лише роблять процес читання лише цікавішим.
Маладек у попередній книжці був дуже відданим і багато чим пожертвував. його самотність та прагнення до родини були зрозумілими ще тоді. але за свою доброту він отримав найкращий подарунок, який тільки міг бути – навіть у полоні. я здивувалася, що так швидко з'явилися мітки. це не виглядало нав'язливо, адже Кеті потребувала так само Маладека, як і він її.
за 14 років, які дівчина була відірвана від Землі, вона нарешті знайшла свій справжній дім і стала щасливою.
оскільки це новела, подекуди через пришвидшений розвиток подій здавалося, що історія не надто глибока. але за цих бусінок я менше поставити не можу :)

A shorter read, but still enjoyable. I just did not really connect with either character, although they were not annoying. I felt the storyline was okay, but nothing too groundbreaking. I did enjoy them as a couple, but a bit more building towards the relationship would have been nice. Still not sure how I feel about the whole thing that they want to all go to earth and talk about their existence, but we shall see whether this really will take place.

This series is amazing!
I love that each book takes a different look at the same thing.
So much fun having side quests in a series to keep it fresh.
Maladek has been a bit of a mystery thus far so it was cool getting to hangout with him.
Can't wait to read the next book in the series!

I had absolutely no idea that Maladek had survived his heroic / sacrificial 'last stand' in 'Using Fejo', so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this novella.
I'm glad that we've been able to see more of him, and that he was given the opportunity to redeem himself in this novella, since he was such an interesting, nuanced character in 'Using Fejo' and deserved his own story.
I think he's one of my favourite characters in the Clecanian series so far, and I would be mad at a full length book, but I'm happy with what we got!

Maladek's mini redemption in Fejo's book was pretty admirable but I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy his own romance. I should've known Victoria Aveline could do no wrong.
This novella was so well paced and executed! Katie was a refreshing FMC in this world, considering she's a human who has spent the past decade in space. We get to skip the character acclimating to space arc which I love because that honestly gets exhausting to read time and time again.
Maladek's growly and protective, out here breaking out of prisons to punch rocks to gift his human the pretty ones. I'm swooning.
I wish this was longer and there was a bit more angst to put this over the top but super solid as is. I wanna see Katie interact with the other humans hehe.

Мені сподобалося з яким захопленням Маладек ставився до Кеті, намагався заслужити її довіру і робив все для її комфорту. Навіть, коли їхній зв'язок засліплював думки. Сподобалося, як Кеті завжди показувала Маладеку, що він важливий для неї і що вона не сумнівається в своїх почуттях і своєму виборі. Адже бачила його сумніви і невпевненість.

At this point, I think someone could give me Victoria Aveline's shopping list and I would be giving it a 5 star review.
I adore the whole series. This novella is not my favourite of the series, but still an amazing book. Maladek's story has a little difference in the "vide" since it takes place out of clecania and Katie has a different plotline that the other human FMC of the clecanian series. This edition is a bit better than the original novella included in an anthology, though.Looking forward to her upcoming novel.

One of my favorites of the series, I wish it weren’t just a novella! I liked that Katie wasn’t part of the group of Earthlings the rest of the series follows, it was a good change of pace, and her character was really likeable. Maladek was one of the sweeter, more doting MMCs of the series (if that’s even possible, they’re all adorably smitten), and just such a lovey guy.
One of my favorites of the series, I wish it weren’t just a novella! Weirdly enjoyed this sweet little novella more than Fejo's entire book. Was so interesting to have an FMC who had been kidnapped years prior and was acclimated to the alien world.
Maladek was also such an interesting MMC, and definitely deserved a bigger role in Fejo's book. It was also nice that the mating bond clicked in place straight away, rather than being made to wait the entire book.
A very cute novella in the series that I would recommend.

This may be my favorite of the series? It’s a close call! I just loved this. I absolutely loved Katie! She is my favorite heroine so far. She was so strong and brave and determined to save her friends. I also adored Maladek and his desire to protect her. I was worried for him after his sacrifice in the previous book, so I was glad to learn more of his story and see him get a happy ending. I loved being back in this world, it was just so so good!

I have drank the kool aid. I am fully immersed in the cult that is this silly lil alien romance series. I cannot stop and will not stop reading and recommending these books. I know this is just technically a novella but OOF. I ATE THIS UPPP.😅
If anyone deserved a redemption arc is was our boy Maladek. Securing some epic karma from the last book where he helped our boy Fejo, Maladek has been imprisoned on this foreign planet and forced into hard labor. That all changes when he scent bonds (think instalove) with Katie who has crash landed on this planet from the one she has been working on and manages to evade capture. Maladek has to earn, break and then re- earn her trust all in a very short period of time. 🛸
The plot in this book?? Next level. Katie and Maladek’s survival and adventure throughout this alien planet (term used loosely) is so entertaining and endearing. Seeing them get to know each other and seeing their internal turmoil at wanting what they think they can’t have back and forth until they finally give in was just PERFECT. I loved every second of this book.
There’s just something about a captivity meet cute guys. It does it for me. My only complaint is that I wanted another 200 pages of their story. Dare I say these two wormed their way into my top 3 alien book tier??

I was a little nervous coming into Maladek's story because of how we met him in Fejo's book, but unsurprisingly Victoria made me love him too. His past was complicated, and even though he was deceived into capturing Fejo, he still managed to demonstrate his honor in the end. Maladek was such a strong, caring, and protective beacon for his mate, but his vulnerabilities allowed him to create an intimate and unbreakable bond with Katie. I absolutely loved Katie as a heroine; she was hesitant but also open and honest. Her positive and loyal demeanor was the perfect match to Maladek's steadfast and protective nature, and their shared passion was so freaking hot. This was another amazing addition to this series, and I cannot wait to continue collecting all of the book boyfriends of Clecania🖤
