Partnering up with a certified hottie who knows the ins and outs of Detroit’s seedy underbelly as well as he does a woman’s body might have its perks if Janet’s life—and her heart—weren’t on the line. . . .
REVIEWER’S OPINION: This book is primarily solving a mystery to find stolen property. The title had me thinking of a caper-style romance but that‘s not the case. The two main characters do not steal anything. Janet is smart and capable which is how the mystery gets solved. Rocky’s role is sexy protector.
I feel like the author wasn’t “inspired” or excited to write this. The mix of characters sounded interesting, but it didn’t take off for me. I wasn’t surprised or delighted.
This book is the sequel to the author’s first book “Lie To Me” which was very good. This book could be read as a stand-alone, but it would be better to read them in order. There is a lot of reference to the past.
The major danger for the heroine happened because she did something VERY STUPID.
The author writes sex scenes with no sex words. For example: he slid inside, he moved his hand between them and touched her. I have no problem with that. What I want is emotional build up and feelings during sex. But there wasn’t enough emotion for me. I found myself skimming through the sex scenes. Technically they were a bit too quick and easy to be believable. Dr. Oz says women need 14 minutes to become aroused and finish. Janet was much faster than that. (Ok, I know this is fiction, but still…) On the positive side, there was a sensual, arousing kissing scene on page 38 and another good one later. I liked those a lot.
Rocky’s character was a little too contrived for me. He became a jewel thief and was in jail for a while. But the author makes him into a good guy with the following. Someone stole heirloom jewelry from his grandparents. Rocky dropped out of school so he could find the jewelry. He became a thief so he could make connections with fences and other thieves. He would only steal from other thieves or people who bought stolen property. He eventually found his grandparents’ jewelry, but he also ended up in jail. Now he is reformed and has a security consulting business. I assume the author wanted to sugar coat Rocky so readers would like him, but I had a hard time buying it. Someone throws their life away becoming a criminal - just because some jewelry was stolen? Loved ones being murdered is a more believable motivator, not theft.
Publisher’s fault, not the author’s: I was annoyed that the cover picture didn’t match the characters. She has short brown hair that barely covers her ears. Cover girl has a chin length bob. The author makes a big deal out of Rocky wearing Hawaiian shirts all the time, so it would have been nice to see that on the cover - or a black T-shirt with black jeans which Rocky wore once. The author never had him in a white T-shirt like on the cover.
STORY BRIEF: The characters: Jack and Banner are half-brothers. Janet and Ellie are best friends. Rocky is Jack’s friend.
The first book: “Lie To Me”: Janet marries Banner and disappears. Ellie goes to Banner’s home to look for clues. She meets Jack. They eventually find Janet and discover Banner is a bad guy. Banner goes to jail.
The sequel: “Thieves Like Us”: Janet is divorced and sells an ugly necklace to a jeweler. Banner had given the necklace to her. He is currently in jail. The police discover the necklace was stolen from a museum with earrings, a broach, and a ring, which are still missing. Some bad guys are after the missing jewelry and think Janet has it. Her car and home are trashed, and she is being followed. Other bad guys want some missing diamonds which Banner had. They too are after Janet, thinking she has them. Rocky helps Janet through all of this. They are attracted to each other.

This is a new to me author and even though I didn't read the first book in the series, I really enjoyed this one and had no problem catching up on the characters. I must say that my first love, snappy dialogue, is well represented here. The characters just sparkle! Janet can take care of herself and even though she is wealthy beyond words, she loves to mix it up. Rocky just sears the pages and reminds me a bit of Ranger from the Stephanie Plum series. If you enjoy romantic suspense, you will love this series. I am off to find the first book, so I can catch up and be ready for the next one.
Janet hocks her wedding ring and an ugly necklace and ends up embroiled in trouble when it turns out the necklace was famously stolen generations ago. Now she has thieves after her and turns to Rocky to help. Rocky is glad to help as he's been trying to get close for a while and he has the contacts and expertise to help.
She ends up moving in with her ex-mother-in-law, who is also watching Libby and gets to deal with some family drama there as well.
With all the craziness caused by her ex-husband (who was the villain in the author's previous book Lie to Me) behind her, Janet Aims finally had her life back on track. She goes and sells her wedding ring and a really tacky necklace he ex gave her as a gift when she found out that the necklace was actually part of a priceless Pellini Jewel collection stolen from a museum hundreds of years old. Jewel thieves, thinking that she had the rest of the jewel collection and wanting it for their own, were suddenly after her and her life goes topsy-turvy again. Even with her ex-husband behind bars, he still managed to mess up Janet's life! The only one who could help her was sexy bad boy Rocky Hernandez, an ex-jewel thief and a man she can't help feeling attracted to.
This book was my first romance after two months of reading young adult and I've forgotten how fun light, romantic comedy romances were. This book was a fun, light read with a great heroine and hero and many secondary that were just as fleshed out as the main characters. Janet had a snobbish rich girl vibe to her in the first few pages and I was afraid I wasn't going to like her but after the first chapter she wasn't snobbish at all. I liked Janet--she's smart, tough and with just the right amount of stubborness. As for Rocky, he was equally likable and definitely hot. He was protective and a nice guy beneath his bad boy front and I can easily understand why Janet was attracted to him despite her trust issues concerning men. I liked that they already had a "thing" before the book began and this book was all about them finally doing something about their mutual attraction. There was great chemistry between Janet and Rocky.
Thieves Like Us is a sequel after Starr Ambrose's Lie to Me and I think it's a much more satisfying read for those who already know the two main characters and the cast of secondary characters from the previous book. However, it can be read as a standalone and I was able to enjoy it without reading LtM. There were a few humorous parts and I read through this book with a smile on my face; it was just a really fun and easy read. If you like light romances with a bit of suspense, look no further than Thieves Like Us.
Let me start by saying that the first book I ever read by Starr Ambrose Lie to Me was one of my favorite books of 2008. I had never heard of Ms. Ambrose before I read that book, but I knew I would be reading any future books by her I liked it that much.
Thieves Like Us is a follow-up to Lie to Me and features Rocky and Janet’s story. I wanted to read this book ASAP hoping for a repeat performance of the funny, entertaining book that was Lie to Me and although I enjoyed Thieves Like Us, I found it lacking the same wow factor that had me reading Ms. Ambrose’s 1st book in record time. Sometimes it‘s hard to pinpoint exactly why you love one book so much while another is just a good solid read.
The characters made the story for me. Ex-con, Hawaiian shirt wearing Rocky Hernandez is the perfect example of not judging a book by it’s cover. He’s hunky, he’s hot and he’s a lot more than a reformed jewel thief running a successful security business and he‘s determined to show one Janet Westfield that they could be great together.
Janet's been trying to avoid the flirtatious advances of one Mr. Rocky Hernandez for months since she doesn't exactly have a soft spot in her heart for men at the moment especially not after her dick of an ex-husband Banner tried to have her killed by Colombian drug lords. Kinda makes a woman think twice about hooking up with a guy again. But now with Banner cooling his jets in jail, Janet wants to purge her ex from her life and decides to unload an antique necklace given to her as a gift and discovers it’s part of a very expensive stolen collection. The big question on everyone’s mind including the Colombians, a Russian mafia boss and a character named Sleazy Easy is where are the other pieces of the Pellini Collection? Annnd the hunt for the gems is on. Problem is everyone thinks Janet knows more about the missing gems than she does and suddenly she finds herself with a huge target on her back.
Rocky and Janet must outwit, outsmart and outlast (survivor anyone?) all the bad guys combined in a race to recover the missing gems before someone ends up dead.
Janet Aims wants to get rid of everything her low life ex husband ever gave her. Wanting to become a new woman she has already cut her hair short, has a new condo, and now she is going to get rid of the engagement ring Banner Westfield gave her, she knows what its worth, heck she found the receipt for the thing. So when she goes into Portman's Jewelers even though she knows the rings value, she really doesn't expect alot for it she just wants rid of it. In the beginning the jeweler doesn't seem interested, but when she plunks down an "ugly" necklace that he gave her as well, she is shocked at what she is offered for it, she gladly takes the money and goes home.
It soon comes to her attention, when the police come knocking on her door, that the necklace is actually stolen, so when the cops take her to headquarters to question her, she knows there is one person who can help her Rocky Hernandez, who is a reformed ex-con. When they realize that the necklace is part of the stolen Pellinni Jewel Collection they soon realize that Janet is in danger from other thieves, because they will assume she has the rest of the collection, and they will do whatever it takes to get it! Rocky has feelings for Janet, but he knows she isn't ready for love but he will do whatever it takes to protect her, will she fall for bad boy Rocky or has her ex soured her on love?
Once I started reading this I realized that there must have been another book before this one, but it didn't take away from this fast paced story. I enjoyed the romantic tension between Rocky and Janet. Because of Rocky's past I wasn't sure of him, but soon realized he was a good guy, I mean heck a guy who has a cat, can't be bad right?
As for Janet she is easily able to handle tough situations, making for some great reading when you pair up this duo. A great romantic suspense that held my attention to the last page, I definitely will look for more from this new to me author!
Even though I was provided a copy of this book for review by the publisher it in no way alters my opinion of this book.
This contemporary romance focuses on Janet Aims, who decides to hock a hideously ugly necklace that her slimeball ex-husband gave her. What Janet doesn't realize is that the necklace is part of a very valuable set called the Pellinni Jewels -- and that there are a lot of people who'd like to find the missing pieces. So Janet turns to ex-jewel thief Rocky Hernandez for help. Rocky has been interested in Janet for a while but has been waiting for her to get over her divorce. But when someone breaks into Janet's house looking for the jewels, Rocky decides to protect Janet no matter what -- even if it means contacting his old criminal associates for information ...
This is a fun contemporary romance, and it definitely had a To Catch a Thief vibe in places. However, I would have liked it that much more if it had been a true caper -- if Rocky and Janet actually had to find/steal the jewels and pull off an elaborate heist/getaway. Then again, I'm a sucker for thief/caper books like that. It's just a plot/genre that I enjoy reading.
I also liked the fact that Rocky is the one who pursues Janet. Rocky knows he wants Janet, and he's determined to do whatever it takes to get her, even help her overcome her trust issues with her slezy ex-husband. It was refreshing to have the guy be the one interested in having a relationship for a change. Also, there's a really entertaining secondary (slightly bad) guy who strikes up a friendship with Janet -- much to Rocky's chagrin.
My only little quibble would be that there were a couple of subplots that didn't work for me, namely another couple finally getting their happily ever after. This could be because I haven't read a previous book that featured these characters, but I just wasn't as invested in the other couple as I was in Janet and Rocky and their search for the missing jewels.
Overall, though, if you need a break from all the holiday stress, check this one out.
I LOVED this book. It was great to revisit Janet from Starr Ambrose's book Lie to Me. It is nice to see that she has made a lot of changes in her life and seems to be moving on with living and life with out her ex-husband Banner. The story picks up with Janet selling jewelry Banner has purchase for her and getting herself into a ton of trouble with the law as it is discovered that this is a piece from a priceless set of jewelry that has been missing for a very long time. With all this trouble, Janet turns to Rocky Hernandez, an ex-con, for assistance with not only finding the other pieces of the missing set but to keep her safe and out of trouble. Sexual tensions brew between these two from the very first time he is introduced. I will have to admit that I love his character. There are a few hot and heavy love scenes that make this book for adults only, but there are amazingly written. Starr Ambrose has a way with words that demonstrates the strong sexuality between these two without being too much like reading an erotica book. It is a great balance. The outcome of this book was not what I thought that it was going to be, but it was even better. I would highly recommend all of the books written by Star Ambrose but I think that this was the best one yet. One strength that I see in the writing is that the book is set in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and Starr Ambrose does a wonderful job of describing the area in perfect detail. For me, this is amazing. I have read a lot of books that will be placed in a town but there is never anything written about the area that someone would really be able to picture it. This book does that and more. Be prepared to want to read this book in one sitting, you won't want to put it down! I give this book 5/5. Get it read it and Enjoy Janet and Rocky!
This is actually a spin-off book from another Starr Ambrose book called, Lie to Me. I haven't read that book, but it isn't necessary to enjoy this book. However, it is obvious when reading that this was part of a series, but the background is supplied in a sufficient way so I did not feel like I was missing too much.
In this book Janet is an ex-wife of a drug-running, thieving, attempted killer. In fact he had tried to kill her in the past. She was strong enough to not wait for the white knight to save her and stood up to her would be killers. This interested an charming ex-jewel thief, Rocky Hernandez. Tall dark and handsome, Rocky thinks he has finally met his match but knows that her heart has been put through the ringer. So, he decides to wait and play it cool until she is ready to love again. As Janet tries to get rid of the old life to make room for the new, she finds herself in the middle of a jewel thieves nightmare and tries to pawn a very valuable and very old piece of jewelry. She becomes the focus of several outlaws trying to get at the jewels at any cost. This enrages Rocky and he wants to protect her. As the two put the pieces of her ex's shenanigans together the question becomes if this adventure will draw them together or pull them apart.
I give this book 3 stars. It's entertaining and fun. If you love animals, you will also love this book as 2 cats and a dog also enter this story. It does pretty much follow the formula but it is entertaining to find out which way the story will go. Janet is a capable woman and Rocky is very sexy. And with that combination, you know that there will be some sexy fun time in the book as well.
Janet Aims is ready to start a brand new life. She already has a new shorter hair do. The last thing Janet has on her list in order to complete rid her of her ex-husband, Banner Westfield or the Westfields is to sell off all the jewelry Banner gave her.
Janet sells her jewelry and makes off like a bandit. She got more money than she thought she would. Unfortunately, Janet’s enthusiasm is short lived. The authorities want to talk to Janet about the jewelry she sold. It seems that the necklace Janet sold is part of the Pellinni Jewels. Someone stole the whole collection. Janet is in some hot water. There is only one person who can help Janet…ex-con and professional jewel thief, Rocky Hernandez.
This book has intrigue and sizzling romance. Janet may have married into wealth but she is not a snob. Janet could handle herself in tough situations. Rocky is easy on the eyes. It is easy to see why Janet could fall for the bad guy.
Thieves Like Us does find perfectly into the category of romantic suspense. A lot of the books I read in this genre some times tend to go more on the romantic side or the suspense side but usually they don’t find the perfect balance between the two. Unlike this book that did just that. Starr Ambrose is a star in my book. I plan to go back and check out all the rest of Mrs. Ambrose’s books. If you are looking for a jewel of a book than pick up a copy of Thieves Like Us!
Well, the weather outside is (getting) frightful... So curl up with Thieves Like Us and be prepared for a very enjoyable romp with Janet and Rocky...
I like Janet. Now that's she's marriage-free from the loathsome Banner Westfield, she's getting rid of everything. Including her diamond ring and that hideous necklace he gave her. How could he ever have thought she'd like that??? So off she goes to sell the jewelry. And gets caught up in a whirlwind of cops, jewel thieves, and Columbian gangsters. Good thing there's that yummilicious Rocky around. Not that she likes him, seeing how he's an ex-con and all, and she's sworn off anything remotely connected with lies and deceit...
But Rocky's not your typical gorgeous ex-con. He's a reformed ex-con. One who's very interested in keeping Janet out of the clutches of the bad guys. Not that she cooperates with that. Oh, no, that Janet has a mind of her own, and she's stubborn to boot.
Thieves Like Us is fun, fun, fun! You'll inhale it in no time, and laugh out loud while you do. I shall be looking for more Starr Ambrose!
This is another solid story by Starr Ambrose. I really enjoy how her books are not just about two characters falling in love, but also have some action that brings them together. I really like Janet's character, who had just gotten out of the one of the worst marriage's in history (her ex tried to have her killed by Columbian drug dealers) and is questioning her judgment about men. Although she is attracted to Rocky, the hero, from the beginning of the story it takes her awhile to work through her relationship issues.
I think my one criticism of the story is that Rocky is just too perfect. He's an ex-thief, but he has a fairly good if implausible reason for the actions that landed him in jail, he's cute, he smart - going after his law degree, and he has no hang-ups. I would have liked to see a bit more struggle or over-coming on his part.
My heart went out to Janet right away. I actually had an ex who was a thief, so I was able to connect with her. I love strong women characters who don't let one bad relationship ruin their ability to love again. Overall, this was a great romance and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has been wronged.
