A retired hypnotherapist and adult education teacher with a one-megaton sense of humour, David Robinson is a Yorkshireman from the outskirts of Manchester, northwest England, where he lives with his wife and a crazy Jack Russell Terrier named Joe (because he looks like a Joe).

He writes in several genres under different pseudonyms, but his mainstay is crime and mystery. He published several novels with different publishers until, in 2011, he turned to self-publishing on the Kindle, putting out 15 titles. In January 2012 Crooked Cat Publishing picked up the first of his popular Sanford 3rd Age Club Mysteries, The Filey Connection. More titles in the series are due in the near future.

He also produces darker, edgier thrillers, such as The Handshaker and Voices; titles which are aimed exclusively at an adult audience and which question the perceptions of reality.

In a more light-hearted mood again, he turns out the occasional sci-fi or paranormal adventure and he has also published some non-fiction.

As at March, 2012, he is working on more of the Sanford 3rd Age Club Mysteries and a sequel to The Handshaker.

I read David Shaw's "Voices" over a period of about a month, mostly on the train between Southampton and London, and finished it waiting for a plane this week at Orly airport. I wanted the train journey to be longer and was grateful for the 3 hour wait for the plane! The book is so gripping.
I don't write many reviews and when I do I don't like putting in plot spoilers, other than those that will only entice, and hopefully encourage you read David Shaw's book.
The book's hero is caught up in an explosion in his college's refectory. At first it's thought to be a terrorist attack, but as the story unfolds Chris (the hero) finds himself involved in a conspiracy involving the military, ghosts and mind control that envelops him, his family and his friends. Just when Chris thinks he's beginning to understand what is affecting him and may be able to take back control of his life, the story takes a twist the reader is taken into a new and darker direction. So often twists in horror stories are dropped on the reader out of the blue with no warning as though the writer couldn't think what to do next. This isn't the case with David Shaw's "Voices". Every plot twist is a natural extension of the story and although it might not have been foreseen, every twist is logical. The final twist at the end even has its own twist and a most satisfying one it is too.
I've read most of James Herbert's books and David Shaw is definitely on a par in the way he creates suspense and horror. He also understands that true horror comes from events that occur in the family and are conceivably possible. It's the shadow behind you that chills far more than the opera-cloaked vampire standing in front of you.
No spoilers!
I have no hesitation in recommending "Voices" both as a suspense thriller and as a true horror story.
This is definitely a 5* book.

When College lecturer Chris Deacon survives a bomb attack he finds his life has changed dramatically. He loses the power of speech and begins to be plagued by strange demons and voices in his head. To rid himself of them he follows a trail into the frightening world of a top secret military experiment from the Cold War, its malign progeny, a new breed of beings, still working for their freedom and their desire to dominate the world.

Voices is a truly gripping story that stayed with me long after I reached the end. It can be downloaded as an ebook on Kindle or from Smashwords.

'Voices' is a cracking supernatural tale that keeps the reader gripped from the opening pages and refuses to let up as author David Shaw drags you deeper and deeper into a mystery that stretches all the way back to the cold war.

When college lecturer Chris Deacon survives the refectory bomb blast, he awakes from a coma to find he no longer holds the ability to hear or speak. He is also plagued by strange apparitions that may or may not be a side affect of his injuries. At first, they just appear when he least expects it, but soon they begin to talk. They also bring along another phantom, Jenny Morton who, strangely enough, is another survivor of the refectory bombings.

And as the story unfolds and his dreams begin to become reality, Chris is shown that the Voices will stop at nothing to get him to co-operate with them. But it is only when he is drawn to a remote house in the middle of the Northumbrian forest, that he finally learns the true horror of the Voices.

David Shaw has delivered a wonderfully intriguing tale, strong in imagery and filled with believable characters you can really root for. It moves along at a good pace to deliver a powerful ending that will not only leave you feeling incredibly satisfied, it will also leave you wanting more.
