Another book to add to my future kids TBR lol the illustrations were colorful and cute and any excuse I have to put another black princess book on my shelves I'll take it. I read it in a Disney princess vlog on my channel here : https://youtu.be/UUyieKPe7Lg
Sleeping Beauty as retold by Fred Crump Jr. is one of my favorites from my personal library.
The craft aspect that changes this story is clearly the use of words. My favorites are the characters names: Princess Alora Prince Tembo, and Evil Sorceress Kashina and the setting in the Kingdom Kenyala. Using culturally relevant names really allows the book to connect with readers who don't have traditional American names.
This book can be used for it's beautiful illustrations to demonstrate how pictures help support the text. Vocabulary is another aspect of teaching this book can help with. A non academic use of this text is to grow minority students' confidence as seeing themselves portrayed as royalty, beautiful and capable of daring exploits.
