Baby Signs for Mealtime (Baby Signs

Rate this book
Babies want to express their needs, especially at mealtime. Through baby signing, they can communicate when they want more, when something is too hot, or even to let everyone know it‘s ‘all gone!‘ Baby signing is easy and natural. Infants and toddlers can learn how to say what they need, what they see, and even what they feel long before their vocal chords are developed enough to let them use actual words. Both books include the most popular signs and provide parents a place to begin ‘talking‘ with their little one from the start. In this revolutionary breakthrough in parent child communication, parents have a priceless window into their young child‘s mind and heart.

I liked this book and didn't give it two more stars because the signs are incorrect. I know that there are babies signing it to appeal to babies. I just don't think that it's a good idea to teach adults the wrong signs to sign to their children. Ice-cream and banana are correct, but the rest of the signs wouldn't look the same if your child was to speak to someone who is hard of hearing or Deaf.
Maybe having an adult signing the correct sign with the illustrations of a baby doing the action would be better. Then again, I don't know if it would appeal to babies the same. I'd rather read a signing book to my child that is more correct. I'll let you know if I come across one.

My one-year-old son really liked this book, both looking at it himself and having me "read" it to him (there really aren't many words since it's about signs and all). The words and pictures are all of things very familiar to him now (with the exception of ice cream. Really? In a book that covers 10 baby signs ice cream is an important one?), which is why I think he likes it. Also has lots of photos of babies. Babies like that kind of thing. They're totally self-obsessed.

This is a great book if you plan to use signing only for mealtime. For the most part these signs are different from those I've encountered on signing videos (There seems to be an almost absolute difference between signs and "baby signs" in videos and books. The book is calles Baby Signs For Mealtime becuase they are just that, baby signs.

Blakely LOVES these books! I checked them out from the library along with some other books and whenever I ask her to pick out a book to read she grabs one of the baby sign books. So now I am going to buy all four for her.
