The story of Crazy John will bring tears to your eyes. A true modern day saint; He loved and cared for everyone and is an example that U.S. Christians should strive to follow. We should use love to help change people not to condemn them. A simple easy read that will change the way you see the world forever.
I cried when I started reading and I cried when I finished. It feels like I got to meet a new friend, I just wish he was physically present today. You'll learn so much about the Christian behaviour to adopt and how to be Christ-like. This saint knew exactly the definition of God is Love and applied in his life and loved his neighbours so much, he even got beaten for it. But he did it all for Christ.
This book is so uplifting. Reading it was like a burst of sunshine and hope. John is an enlightened being in humble packaging in working class Athens. Without claiming any credit for himself, he befriends and supports his whole neighborhood. Only after his death, do all the stories of his loving generosity come out.
Like Christ, Crazy John befriended the tax collectors (thieves) and prostitutes. His friendship "reforms" a man who worked as a transvestite prostitute. Seeing value and worth in this 'cast off', he helps to integrate him in the community. It seems John sees worth in everyone. FYI: There is 1 line linking homosexuality to deviance. FYI 2 : the writing is amateur, especially in the opening chapter, or maybe it is the translation from the Greek.
Weaknesses aside, this book confirmed how even the simplest of people can live a saintly life dedicated to loving and supporting others. We, in our busy materialism, could overlook the saints among us. John's is a life that is so full of LOVE that there is no room for fear. He shows us a life that is saturated with love, trust, joy.
It was hard for me to start reading the book at first because it sounded more like random testimonies about this "John" whom I knew nothing about but it picked up fairly quickly. Before I knew it, I got so caught up in picturing the setting of where everything was taking place, connecting all of the stories and the people together and getting to know Crazy John that I finished the entire book in one sitting!
Remarkable man, or rather 'Saint', and a wonderful way to document his story.
