Kohta Hirano (平野 耕太 Hirano Kōta) is a Japanese mangaka most famous for his manga Hellsing. Starting his career first as a mangaka's assistant (self-described as "horrible" and "lazy" in said assistant position), and later an H manga artist, he went on to enjoy somewhat limited success with other relatively unknown manga titles such as Angel Dust, Coyote, Gun Mania and Hi-Tension. His first major success came with his manga series Hellsing, which got its start and was subsequently serialized in a monthly manga magazine, Young King OURs, towards the latter half of 1997.

If you’re a fan of vampires, zombies, gore, and WWII, this is the manga for you. Kouta’s Hellsing is about the most powerful vampire in the world, Alucard, and his master who is the ruler of Hellsing Co (a company in charge of keeping creepy, crawly, ghosty, ghouls in line), Integra Hellsing, and an innocent little police girl, just stuck in the middle of it all, miss Seras Victoria. This manga is beautifully illustrated and the plot line is long, but definitely worth reading.
The plot of all this is basic; the most powerful vampire fighting along a powerful master, saving England and killing nazis as they go along. The main villain of this manga is a fat little pig of a man who wants one thing and one thing only; war. This pig thinks that death and destruction is beautiful, and starts to gain followers quickly, much like hitler. Except his followers aren't just mortal, they’re Werewolves, Vampires, and the hoards of undead zombies that the vampires control like puppets. The entire manga is basically a blood bath. Seras comes in when her police squad is attacked and she's the only survivor. Alucard gets to her just in time but has to shoot through her to kill the vampire holding her hostage. In order to save her life, he turns her into a vampire. Along with trying to kill the war obsessed pig, Seras is in her own war with her own body as it starts to crave blood and she finds herself turning into a monster.
The book is gory and action packed, but the plot does seem to drag on forever, with just minor little speed bumps until the end. This causes the manga to get a bit boring after a few chapters but it always tends to grab the reader back in just when they start to get bored, introducing a new character or a plot twist you wouldn't expect. I would recommend this book to a classmate of mine who has a Goat Whore shirt because I feel he would thoroughly enjoy it.

Style of Substance

The Good: This manga series is very stylish, gritty and overall, very cool. The story is brutal and the action is commanding. Besides all of the blood, gore and explosions though, there is an interesting political/historical narrative. The Hellsing manga talks about the tension between Protestant countries and Catholic countries, which takes an otherwise mediocre slasher plot and gives it a little depth. The theme that I thought was handled the best was the idea of "death in battle as being the ultimate goal". This reminded me of the Viking ideology, whereby soldiers who died in battle would be rewarded in the afterlife. .

The Bad: After a little while, the amount of blood, gore and exploded bodies gets old. I found myself dragging through battles because I was bored with the carnage. Once you've seen a vampire chew through someone, the next time it happens, it's just not as exciting. It's sort of like watching a slasher movie, after a while the deaths just begin to blend together. Another weakness of the series is the plot, but really, people aren't going to reading this for the amazing plot.

Overall, an enjoyable series if you're looking for cool action sequences. 4/5 Stars.

The only manga I own, and I've read with great pleasure. There is something very cathartic about this series that appeals to me, and one of the very few manga artstyles I can watch for a long time. As long as you can ignore the weirdness of it (vampires fighting nazi vampires fighting catholics, i.e.) and accept the gratuitous violence, you'll like it as well.

I love this manga. Hellsing - a classic of the genre, as for me.
Fascinating story, a lot of things to think about what is happening, coming up with their development of the plot. Loved the idea of the master and servant relationship.

This is a review of the entire series.

Synopsis: There's a secret organization somewhere in England created to defend the Queen and country from monsters of all sorts. Their secret weapon? The most powerful monster in the world. What better way to deal with monsters than to send an even bigger threat their way?

Review: Vampires vs. Nazis vs. Catholic Extremists vs. Secret Agents of the Queen of England.

Hellsing is pure carnage, following a twisted cast of characters that know how to take pleasure in the unfettered chaos that war brings. Alucard is a high-class vampire that hunts down supernatural beasts, Alexander is a priest fueled by bloodlust and an unhealthy love for God, Major is the second coming of Hitler, Integra is the granddaughter of Van Helsing himself, and that's only a few of the main players. The premise of the plot and the characters playing the game of war make for an absolutely ridiculous and bloody fun time.

Again, the word that comes to mind here is carnage, and carnage is what is delivered in a very cunning and charming fashion. The plot may indeed be insane and a bit silly, but Hellsing takes pride in its crazy premise and has a badass sense of self-awareness that makes it a cut above the average pulp fiction escapade.

Buena historia, fácil de leer y entretenida. Lo unico que me la baja es la sexualizacion de los personajes femeninos. El diseño esta muy bien logrado, las escenas sangrientas sobre todo.

The five stars do not mean this series is perfect, far from. But in my reviews at least, five stars means it's among my personal top favorites. By far this is my all-time favorite graphic novel, and I try to read it every October for Halloween.

A more in depth review will be up the next time I re-read this. For now, I'll just say that the art and characters are what made me fall head over heals in love with this series. And like "Star Trek: Voyager," this series does a fantastic job with its female characters, sans one otherwise amazing characters' gag-boobs. Alucard is one of the most fascinating protagonists in fiction, and this series overall is a rare instance where all of my favorite characters are the four main heroes.

The artwork is mind-blowingly detailed, and has a fantastic style to it. It had a huge influence on my own drawing style for my ink drawings. For the "real" review, I'll post some scans.

Minus one point for Girlycard, the Valentine brothers, the offensive portrayal of Catholics, and the "I planned all of this from the beginning so none of your actions meant anything!" reveal. (As usual, when this infuriating "twist" appears in a story, I head-canon that the villain is just B.S.-ing to save face. )
