This lavishly illustrated classic, selling over 70,000 copies in English and translated into four European languages, is the first to deal comprehensively with the mandala, the principle of the center, as a universal image, a vision, a way of growth, a ritual technique, and an essential life process. 92 illustrations, 11 in color.
I found a beat up old copy of this book at the library and hoped that it would fulfill my general curiosity about Mandalas. It far exceeded my expectations (which would have been satisfied, honestly, with pages full of pretty pictures to look at). This book is a great introduction to the history and complexity of Mandalas both as an art form and meditative practice. It provided a great base of knowledge that I look forward to deepening with further reading on the subject. I truly appreciated the "notes" at the end of each chapter because it provides the perfect roadmap to other books with which I could look to for more information about the different aspects that Arguelles covered. And lastly, the images. I found many of these fascinating and I enjoyed not only looking at but also reading the context behind the authors' own Mandalas. This book is one I hope to find a copy of to add to my own permanent library because I could see myself wanting to reference it again.
I loved the in depth of documentation and how easy it was to read considering it was more like a textbook which is not the sort of book I usually like to read. Captivating! Leela Francis www.VividlyWoman.com
Outstanding...reading it again and again as a reference to essential understanding of underlying key human experiences flowing through an Universal intelligence. Added to my pile of book "mentors".
I read this book in 1972, just a month or two after it was published. The timing could not have been better for me as a young consciousness explorer since it knit together many of the diverse streams of inquiry I had already undertaken.
This was my first introduction to Arguelles and to his wildly creative mind. I have read virtually everything he has written since and I collaborated with him personally back in the 80's. More at http://www.lightningpath.net/TIMEWAVE...
An indispensable reference for anyone curious about the various origins and applications of Mandala. Filled to the brim with beautifully interpretable figures, José and Miriam Argüelles' labor of love is as informational as it is poetic, offering readers many priceless moments of meditation and self-reflection. A wonderful exploration of the nature of reality!
