Piccoli amori

Rate this book

Czech-born poet, playwright, and novelist, whose central themes were religious faith, heroism, and human brotherhood. Franz Werfel's best-known works include The Forty Days of Musa Dagh (1933), a classic historical novel that portrays Armenian resistance to the Turks, and The Song of Bernadette (1941). The latter book had its start when Werfel, a Jew escaping the Nazis, found solace in the pilgrimage town of Lourdes, where St. Bernadette had had visions of the Virgin. Werfel made a promise to "sing the song" of the saint if he ever reached the United States. He died in California in 1945.

Romanzo breve, solo cento pagine. Delizioso.

Have only had _Jakobowsky und der Oberst_ before this, and thought it would make good commuting reading. A nice coming of age story with a glimpse of life among the Haut bourgeoisie in Prague before World War I. Hugo has been seriously sick so that he did not go to school and the family employed a nanny, Erna Tappert who lets Hugo into her personal life. So Hugo meets two of her lovers, one a soldier whom he liked and then a second a civil servant whom he didn't like. Later she becomes pregnant, and she takes him to her petit bourgeois apartment, where he overhears a conversation with her mother that he doesn't fully grasp, but any adult will understand indicates she has gotten pregnant. After keeping what he has witnessed secret, sensing that Erna is in trouble, Hugo tells her mother, a decision that appears to lead to the family giving her financial assistance, thought whether it is for an abortion or a to go away and have the baby secretly isn't entirely clear, but after great panic about losing her Hugo awakes one morning ready to move on into adolescence and we assume begin study at the gymnasium.

It is tenderly told, and might well be worth comparing with Musil's _Die Verwirrung des Zöglings Törless_ .
