Life isn’t the bright future Maggie imagined when she married Justin Bailey on the spur of the moment three years before. His lack of integrity and ambition, and his frequent infidelities and physical abuse made the marriage impossible. When Maggie follows her friend’s suggestion that she move onto her friend’s widowed brother’s ranch to work as his cook and housekeeper, Justin tracks her there. With an infant and toddler she must raise on her own, Maggie finds herself suddenly a widow. With an unexpected disclosure from her mother, when she goes to Oklahoma to care for her on her mother’s deathbed, she loses a sense of her own identity. Falling in love with her employer brings its own problems when his loyalty to his lifelong friend, whom he discovers loves Maggie as well, produces a road block as far as a relationship between he and Maggie is concerned. Her life appears on hold until an escaped convict comes into the picture and Maggie finds herself knocking at death’s door. Although her life is filled with unexpected twists and turns, she continues to hope that the red sky in the Arizona sunset is an indication that there will be clear sailing ahead for her and her daughters.
Red Sky at night sailors delight… And so was this sequel. I loved this sequel to “Maggie The Early Years.” I was very much interested in Maggie and what was going to become of her taking off with a new husband that she hardly knew anything about. I don’t want to ruin the story, so I can’t say much. But I am so glad that Maggie had a somewhat happier life in this book, eventually. Of course, that does not happen without her usual adversities first. I did enjoy this book and can’t wait to read the next one in the series. I love to see that books have sequels before I begin the first volume. If I do like the author’s style of writing and the characters, I don’t have to stop just because the book ends, I can get the next one and continue on reading. I can go back for more. I love having seconds when the reading is good. Melva J. Henderson has that type of style and character development that you want to come back for more.
Maggie's life was never a desirable one, so when she made the decision to get married to Justin, she thought it could only be an improvement. Unbeknownst to her, nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, her life took a devastating turn for the worse.
Due to the help of a friend, she found herself working and living in a better environment, at last, but an unexpected telegram delivers news leading her down a path that uncovers an overwhelming truth. It not only surprises Maggie, but helps her to understand her less-than-desirable upbringing.
Just when you think nothing can go wrong, a horrifying twist then lands Maggie in a predicament beyond her wildest dreams. This is an electrifying story that captures your every emotion and leaves you turning the pages quicker than you can finish them.
You'll want to learn of Maggie's fate as soon as possible!
I have to say I did enjoy reading this book. I found my heart breaking for Maggie because of how cold and mean her family was to her, plus on top of that she had to endure other hardships involving the men in her life. I think the book deserves 3 1/2 stars. I would give it a higher rating if the character development went a little deeper. Having said this, I believe this author has great potential, and I just might pick up and give the next one in line a go.
