Lisa Whelchel uses Proverbs to guide women in a biblical approach toward the areas of parenting, marriage, and friendship. There are 52 short chapters, one for each week of the year. ( I did not read it weekly; I read it during commercials while I was watching shows on hulu. Might just as well get in a devotional while the commercials are playing, right?!)
Each chapter provides a short lesson about the selected proverb, the actual proverb as written in the Bible, and a paraphrase of the proverb that Lisa wrote. For example, week 21 is titled "On Motives", and it addresses Proverbs 21:2 (ESV): "Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the heart." Lisa's paraphrase is less subtle and flowery and hits you right in the gut: "You can justify anything to anyone but God. He can see straight through to the real reasons behind your actions." Ouch! That will make you think!
