Bright bold colours and a story full of adventures. Daniela has to pass a lot of tests in order to make her dream come true. She has to prove she is strong , fast, sneaky, brave and is an awful cook! After all this, the captain still claims she cannot be a pirate because she is a girl. The crew rebels at this obvious unfairness and elects Daniela their new leader. Girls can be anything they want!
I really enjoyed the beautiful illustrations and the fast pace of the story.

Captain Choppylobe runs a tight ship, a pirate ship, that is. When Daniela, a girl who has always dreamed of being a pirate, tries to hire on, the captain sets several tasks before her in order to test her mettle. She passes them all with flying colors, even cooking up a horrible soup and solving a treasure puzzle map. Nevertheless, the captain refuses to hire her own since she's a girl. The rest of the pirates come to her defense, and it is the captain, not Daniela, whom they get rid of. Now Daniela has her wish and she sails the seven seas with her new pirate friends. I'm sure that would-be pirates, especially girls, will enjoy this picture book since it challenges assumptions about what girls can do and shows a girl being quite brave, strong, and smart--at least smart and versatile enough to persuade a whole crew of pirates to take a chance on her leadership. This one might be interesting to use in a classroom lesson on possible careers or to show youngsters that persistence pays off. It also could spark a healthy discussion on gender roles. The colorful illustrations have a comic-book appearance, which adds to the fun of reading the book.

🏴☠️Feliz día! El libro que os traigo hoy es una verdadera joya: tanto por su contenido, como el diseño en el que viene. ¿Conocéis a Daniela Pirata? Pues quedaos, que os la presento.
🦜Si hay algo que me gusta más en un cuento, es que se dé su lugar a la mujer, a las chicas. Que se ponga en valor que las niñas tienen su lugar, son protagonistas y tienen y son referentes.
🏴☠️Y las aventuras de esta pirata son una muestra de empoderamiento, reivindicación y feminismo. Con las chicas como protagonistas, estas cuatro historias tienen cada una un mensaje lleno de fuerza.
🦜El primer cuento que vamos a leer es #DanielaPirata en el que va a demostrar que pirata se es por méritos y no por ser de un género u otro.
🏴☠️El segundo se titula #DanielaYLasChicasPiratas en el que sale a relucir la sororidad, tan necesaria y explicada de forma sencilla y clara.
🦜Luego tenemos #DanielaPirata #YLaBrujaSofronisa que aboga la empatía, el diálogo y el perdón. Incluso a la comprensión y el apoyo.
🏴☠️Y por último, el cuarto cuento #DanielaPirata #YLaMalvadaCíclope en el que el valor de la palabra cobra protagonismo de nuevo y pone en valor la audacia y sabiduría de nuestra protagonista.

Determined to become a pirate, Daniela seeks out the infamous Black Croc pirate ship, led by the fearsome Captain Choppylobe. This buccaneer gives her a series of tests to prove her speed and strength, her stealth and treasure-finding abilities, but although she does splendidly in every trial, he rejects her for one key reason: she's a girl, and only boys can be pirates. It's then that the crew of the Black Croc decide to step in...
Originally published in Spain as Daniela Pirata, and then released in English by the original publisher—the Madrid-based NubeOcho—Daniela the Pirate is the first of a series of picture books chronicling its eponymous heroine's adventures. As it happened, I encountered the third book, Daniela the Pirate and the Witch Philomena first, and only then discovered that there were others. In any case, I found this one entertaining, and liked the way in which Daniela approached each challenge with a can-do attitude. The conclusion of the tale is, of course, very satisfying! The accompanying artwork from Gómez is colorful and full of humor, matching the story very well. Recommended to young children who enjoy pirate stories. For my part, I intend to seek out more stories from the series, and from author Susannah Isern.

She must prove her worth by passing tests of bravery, strength, and skill but fails the final test of being boy. The crew stands by her, however, and kicks Captain Choppylobe off the ship.
There is a lot of appeal to books about girls doing things that are typically ascribed to boys. While very heavy handed in this book, it is still a message that will resonate with some readers. The illustrations are bright and active but a little too busy at times. The story felt cliché to me without any great writing to boost its appeal.

Daniela wants to be a pirate aboard the famous ship The Black Croc. The captain puts her through a number of tests, which she passes with ease. However, the captain then declares that Daniela can't be a pirate because she's a girl! The crew mutinees, and makes Daniela their captain. A lovely pirate story about gender equality for kids.
I used this one for Pirate Day storytime 2019, and the kids loved it. When the captain said Daniela couldn't join their crew, one little boy shouted, "That's not right!" Wonderful.

The topic is good, but the illustrations not so much. Susana could have done a better job depicting the characters of the story. The different characters are a clear manifestation of someone (perhaps the illustrator) who is cultural insensitive.

La història es desenvolupa molt bé, però cap al desenllaç...És necessari que fins i tot, siguen els homes que "reclamen" els drets de les noies/dones? No ho poden fer elles mateix? No necessitem ser salvades ni defeses!

Una divertida historia de cómo Daniela quiso ser pirata, y teniendo todas las habilidades necesarias se encontró con obstáculos para convertirse en una, pero finalmente lo consiguió. Muy lindas ilustraciones y mensaje final en defensa de las niñas.

Lectura una mica simplista del feminisme però val com exemple

Daniela es una niña valiente, fuerte, alegre, inteligente, atrevida y muy segura de sí misma. Sabe bien lo que quiere para cumplir su sueño, y ese no es otro que convertirse en pirata en el temido barco "Caimán Negro". Para conseguirlo se ha de enfrentar a una serie de pruebas que ella supera sin ninguna dificultad. Pero aún así el capitán Orejacortada la rechaza por ser una chica. El resto de la tripulación se opone a semejante injusticia expulsando a su capitán y convirtiéndose así Daniela en la nueva capitana del barco pirata.
Este es un cuento para demostrar que el género no importa para hacer y conseguir lo que se quiera, dando a entender que es una injusticia rechazar a alguien por su identidad sexual cuando ha demostrado que realmente tiene las capacidades y actitudes necesarias. Da igual ser chico o chica, lo importante es querer algo y luchar por conseguirlo.
Las ilustraciones de Gómez son muy coloridas, divertidas, atractivas y muy llamativas, con colores alegres y muchos detalles que enseguida atrapan a los pequeños lectores.
Este es un cuento para demostrar que el género no importa para hacer y conseguir lo que se quiera, dando a entender que es una injusticia rechazar a alguien por su identidad sexual cuando ha demostrado que realmente tiene las capacidades y actitudes necesarias. Da igual ser chico o chica, lo importante es querer algo y luchar por conseguirlo.

[...] Como Daniela Pirata he superado, a lo largo de los años, todo tipo de pruebas para demostrar mi valía, se pescar, soy fuerte, soy rápida, soy valiente, soy silenciosa, se cocinar, estudio y sé leer mapas, lo cual, en teoría, me capacita para formar parte de la tripulación pirata, y como a Daniela, se me excluía simplemente por ser chica.
Por suerte, esta es una injusticia que, el resto de mi tripulación, tampoco estuvo dispuesta a dejar pasar, como los piratas de Daniela. Por suerte, el género, es una barrera que no invalida para ser pirata y como Daniela, pude continuar mi proyecto.
Al 2021 le pido que ninguna otra mujer se tenga que sentir como Daniela y como yo, que eduquemos niños que sepan que el género no nos separa, que se conviertan en adultos que, con más cabeza que algunos de mis coetáneos, vean más allá de las barreras físicas y fisiológicas.
Al 2021 le pido, también, que mis artículos no se queden en esbozos en mi cabeza y encuentren su camino hasta estas páginas.

Die Geschichte hat mich zwar nicht total umgehauen bzw. tief berührt, sie ist eher simpel gestrickt, dennoch ist es ein schönes, lesenswertes (empfehlenswertes) Bilderbuch mit netten Details und wichtiger Botschaft: Mädchen können auch Piratin oder Kapitänin sein!
