The mysteries surrounding private investigator LADY MECHANIKA and her origin begin to unfold as she heads to a rundown city known as Satan's Alley. Located on the lower eastside, it is an area of town under siege by the presence of a murderous creature of unknown origin. While a weapons manufacturer has issued a reward for the unknown slayer, drawing a crowd of bounty hunters looking to cash in, Lady Mechanika's purpose is far more personal - information that could lead to the truth about her creation.

Well. This is kinda sorta awkward and stuff. I read this less than a week ago but remember very little about it. Oh well, I guess it kinda sorta explains why I rated it 3 miserable little stars. And vice versa. I think. Maybe. Whatever. (Sorry, what? You have no idea what I'm talking about here? Don't worry, me neither.)
Anyhoo and stuff, I think I sort of (vaguely) remember that the premise was sort of (vaguely) intriguing. Mostly because of the Victorian Steampunk Thingie Vibe. I think.
Wait. I feel weird all of a sudden. I think I may be coming up with something lethal.
Bloody shrimping hell of the stinking fish! It was something very lethal indeed! I just had a (quite unexpected and rarely hear of) lightbulb moment and remembered why I gave this issue such a pathetic rating! It's all because of the art! Bless my little decaying grey cells for recalling that much! Okay, to be honest, the art isn't actually bad. It's actually, um, well, pretty good and stuff:
BUT. The way the heroine is portrayed = 🙄🙄🙄🙄. Are we not OVER the Bimbo of the Overflowing Boobs and So-Tiny-It's-Nearly-Nonexistent Waist (BotOBaSTINNW™) cliché yet??
Seriously and stuff, who is the target audience for this comic? Prepubescent, hormonal teens? I don't know the author and would have given him the benefit of the doubt if only the heroine hadn't added to the cliché by acting like a complete nitwit. But she did, so I didn't. Ah, gotta love writers and artists who perpetuate the slightly moronic, hot-looking kick-ass chick stereotype!
"Consider yourself warned, Lord Blackpool. When we next meet, if you happen to be so foolish, I will not be as merciful."
Rated T for Teen.
This is a gothic steampunk graphic novel. Lady Mechanika is a Lara Croft-type character who is rich and part machine. Evil people want to study her and use her machinery to make war.
The book starts out with her hunting an ugly half-mechanical demonic creature. She fights with it, but it turns out to be a little sweetie who is not only friendly to her, but was created by the same maker as she was.
The
The hunter is then murdered by his employer, the evil Lord Blackpool. You know. Evil people are always murdering their hired help. It makes them more evil.
ANYWAY, Blackpool then turns his hunters on Mechanika, claiming she's a fine specimen for his experiments. She kicks minion ass, then inexplicably and very stupidly spares Blackpool's life even though it's obvious to all readers that she should kill him immediately because he's simply going to come after her with more guns.
Not very reassuring that Issue #0 of this establishes our MC as a moron, or, a person unwilling to kill.
The art is very good, dark, gothic, and transporting - although I do have some issues with Mechanika's costume design. It's not very protective armor and exposes her belly and strangely showcases her breasts. If you want to give her an unrealistic Lara Croft body, fine, but can we get past this "sexy armor" thing? It's annoying and stops me from taking your comic seriously.
Tl;dr - Not perfect, but I enjoyed it. If you like gothic steampunk, this is right up your alley. 1878 England.
I discovered this series by chance. I like steampunk stories and the artwork is amazing, so I decided to try the number #0.
This number introduces the character, there is not much story: Mechanika is a young woman without memories of the past and with parts of the body replaced by mechanical parts. She uses his skills as a private investigator and, at the beginning of the story, follows the tracks of a mysterious, partly mechanical, creature that could reveal clues about her past.
From this number we don’t understand much else, but it is enough to be attracted by the story, enriched by the excellent drawings, that make the steampunk style good, right from the first image on the cover. The character is interesting, kind and humane, but at the same time merciless and violent with the enemies.
I will definitely continue the series, a great job by Joe Benitez.
A short and nice prequel. Felt more like a teaser. Pity my favorite character won't make it to the main story. I loved the art (I would give 5 stars just for that), but the story is yet to be seen (we had just a taste). All-in-all entertaining.
The art in this is freaking amazing! I love the set up already. I can't wait to get my hands on the next one. Definitely a fun steam punk/supernatural comic!
I love the art style of this issue and that's the main reason I picked this one up but then when I started to actually READ it, well now I know that I love the direction of the story too! :) This is a 4.5* read for me and an excellent introduction to who Lady Mechanika is and what her story may become. I think this is maybe a prequel which was released after the first few issues(?) as it's called issue #0, but I honestly think it's a fabulous place to begin and it's made me want to buy the trade for sure!
This story follows Lady Mechanika, the only known remaining experiment of integrating machines with flesh. She's an anomaly, a strange and mysterious blend of human and robot, and she's also a pretty feisty lady! Trust me, you don't want to get on the wrong side of her. Set in London in the 1800s this is a kick-ass beginning to a tale which promises to be part fighting, part mystery and a whole lot of fun. I cannot wait to discover more about her and this whole Steampunk world!
Also, can I just say again how truly stunning this artwork is?! I love the dark colour palette and the fact that our main character looks so feminine but pirate-y too is just an added plus. She's adventurous, full of secrets and very nimble. I think this could easily become a great series and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next issues/trade so I can read more and more about this wonderful character! 4.5*s and recommended if you like Steampunk!
Quite liked this! Lady Mechanika is a force to be reckoned with, easy on the eye and has her heart in the right place. The demon 'thing' made me want to cry though... unreal how quickly I became attached to him... *sigh*
In this short issue, we get to meet the famous Lady Mechanika and a little special creature who ends up recognizing her, Lady Mechanika is on the verge of knowing who she really is, when a stupid colonel shows up.
Illustrations, colors, actions, Joe Benítez is spoiling us.
I thought it will be one of those comics with the chick resting her boobs on the lower border of the comic panel while muttering some catchphrases, but Mechanika's got character and character is sekshiii!
Both ruthless and compassionate, she kicks ass in combat and looks a little like a drow (dark elf) with those dark, creepy eyes.
Too bad #0 is so short, barely showing that she is trying to figure out who she is and introducing a glimpse of her to the readers.
A little bit off-topic (yet relevant!) - I present the most adorable steampunk band:
Stunningly beautiful art and such a captivating story. Too bad the paper issues are nearly impossible to find, because I'd love to add them to my collection.
I have the Free Comic Book Day version of this. I was a little skeptical at the beginning because I wasn’t a fan of the way Mechanika is drawn – she looks even more exaggerated than Barbie with her tiny waist, big hips and big boobs. But once I started reading I sort of enjoyed it.
There were definitely some flaws that I didn’t like – for instance the fact that she was hunting this “devil” and as soon as he said “oh ok, I don’t want you to kill me” she made friends with him immediately. That was not very believable. I did like him, but I just didn’t think she should trust him so quickly.
I liked the era and style. I really enjoy steampunk and clockwork art. I liked the outfits that most of the characters wore. The last little excerpt we are given has a beautiful boarded around some of the images giving it a Victorian feel. And I loved the design of the clockwork bird at the beginning of it.
There were some pages that were just cluttered with text - it's hard to keep looking at the pictures while reading where there is that much text. There were a couple pages that it was hard to follow the dialogue to know which direction you were supposed to read. The reader is given some info and of course not enough info all at the same time. I enjoyed it enough – I just can’t decide if I enjoyed it enough to actually go pick up the rest of the comics…
I’m undecided on this one. I’m glad we picked it up on Free Comic Book Day though.
This zero issue of the Lady Mechanika series was available for free download on Comixology. The appealing cover and promise of steampunk sold me. The author explains in the back how con steampunkers led him to try out writing a story in that world. Consequently, the steampunk aspect so far is primarily conveyed through the character costumes (which are brilliant). If not for the clothes and antique weapons, this could be any sci-fi cyborg story, easily taking place in any number of time periods or settings. With that said, I still enjoyed the introduction to Lady Mechanika who is on a quest to find her origin while wearing fabulous corsets and harnesses. Also, the end has cutesy "steampunk" recipes which seem like a very Gail Carriger touch.
(2.5) Haven't read a Graphic Novel in a while so thought I would give this a go. It was an interesting story and I enjoyed the unique characters, the artwork was outstanding! BUT... I'm really not happy about the representation of the female body, every single woman had massive breasts and tiny waists, I don't mind one or two being this way but would have been nice to see even a bit of variety of body shapes. Also, Arliquinn (a character represented as a child/young teenager) was drawn super sexualised, really didn't like that. Even the protagonist, in a couple of high action scenes is wearing extremely low cut tops, it's like how is that even practical? It's a shame because I would have given it a much higher rating if it wasn't for that.
I got this comic for free, and seeing as I've actually wanted to read it, that was a great treat!
To be honest, I never expect much of the first comic in a series. They're so short getting all the things one need into it can become messy. So then you don't try to force it all, and the resault might be boring and not giving the reader a reason to pick up the next issue.
That was not the case here. In less than 20 pages, the author introduced us to a character I already like, showed us what her personal goal is, and her troubles. They also introduces a belivable villain, not to mention they told us a lot about sociaty and the world. All in all, it was well done!
Not to mention that I really liked the art. Art can easily be a hit or miss, but this worked great for me. I liked the design of the people and weapons
Honestly, the only reason this doesn't get 5/5 stars is because I'm not emotionally invested enough for the scenes that shocked me now to actually make me feel a lot.
I am looking forward to getting my hand on the rest of this series!
Cómic gratuito para hacer boca de esta serie. Me había atraído la temática steampunk y con este número me ha enganchado. Ha dejado abierta la puerta para nuevas historias. La trama parece interesante y el dibujo es bastante bueno.
What is it that people find so fascinating about steampunk? Is it the Victorian sensibilities, the mixture of the vaguely modern and the Victorian? Bustles and ray guns? Gears and Clockwork? Maybe it’s the zeppelins and mad scientists. My friend Nick jokes that Steampunk is when Goths found the brown palettes of color. Whatever the draw is, I dig it. And for all of the above things. Its period, but it’s not. Mostly it is just fun when done right.
Now Comixology is really a great resource at times though admittedly a bit less now that their free section is limited. Shame really as their free section was how I found a lot of decent comics. Anyway, as we tried to find some lady in comics, comics for our latest comic book 101, I found Lady Mechanika. Let’s face it the whole steampunk vibe had me hooked. She would be fun to cosplay. I know you are not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but I so did. The art is quite lovely. I was intrigued. I decided to read more.
Lady Mechanika is half human and half machine. She cannot remember where she came from, who created her, who she is, and what she was meant to do. The official backstory on her, though not presented in the comics is that “The tabloids dubbed her "Lady Mechanika", the sole survivor of a serial killer's three-year rampage through England. Authorities found her locked in an abandoned laboratory amidst an undeterminable number of corpses and body parts, her own limbs having been amputated and replaced with mechanical components. With no memory of her captivity or her former life, Mechanika eventually built a new life for herself as a private detective, using her unique abilities to solve cases the police couldn't or wouldn't handle. But she never stopped searching for the answers to her own past." Nice premise. Wish we could have had that in Issue 0 as I would have been even more interested in the Lady.
In this preview issue Lady Mechanika is investigating the rumors of a half mechanical demon haunting Satan’s Alley. There she meets up with Nathaniel Blackpool of Blackpool Armaments who wants to capture her and study her bits that are mechanical. He is also hunting the “demon” who has been haunting the alleyway. When they discover what has really been inhabiting the shadows, each treats it very differently.
It’s a teaser issue so it is extremely short. However, even in those very limited pages, I fell for the artwork and for Lady herself. I want to know more. She can kick your ass, but she can also show you kindness. I enjoyed the introduction to what could be a fun character and a fashionable on at that with all of her harnesses, corsets, and maybe a bustle or two.
Joe Benitez gets a gold star for creating, writing, and illustrating Mechanika. In fact it was the artwork that drew me in.
Buy or Borrow: Buy. It’s worth checking out.
Part of: Ongoing Series.

I stumbled upon this graphic novel completely by accident, but I'm glad I did. Lady Mechanika is a Steampunk graphic novel with absolutely wonderful illustrations! I was instantly drawn to the book after just seeing the cover. Lady Mechanika is a young woman, part human, part machine. There are large gaps in her memory, particularly how she came to be this way. This book, although very short at only 25 pages, sets the scene for the series to come as Lady Mechanika begins a journey to discover her origins. The character is totally badass, wielding an assortment of weapons and demonstrating her fighting abilities. All that being said, there is also a softer, compassionate side to her as well. I look forward to seeing what is revealed in the coming editions.
I'm reading this series on my iPad through my Kindle app. The quality of the art work looks really good on the screen. The zoom feature could be better as when I try to zoom in on the text, I still find it a little too small and have had to resort to using a magnifier with my iPad!

My thoughts 4 stars Normally I don't read graphic novels since their out of my comfort zone but while I did like this one there was some problems with it, will there is one problem and its: 1st and biggest and only problem: there was some parts of it that I had to zoom in on to actually read, will other parts I didn't have to . what I did like about it: art work is fantastic the story line is an interesting one to read with that said I will be looking to get the rest of the series .
This was a great book I love the graphic and the storyline.
This is a spoiler:
The author even leaves two recipes for the readers to make. I also read this on my nook color and it worked great. However, it did take a little of tweaking for the font to focus and the panel function did work right so I ended up enlarging the whole coming and going from panel to panel manually. I bought the next two comic in the series and will probably stay with this till the end.
Lady Mechanika is a Steampunk comic book series depicting a character named Lady Mechanika who is part human and part machine. Set in the 1800, Lady Mechanika is an investigator in Europe and suffers from amnesia. Through the series, Lady Mechanika investigates a series of events to try and piece together the missing parts of her memory and how she became part machine.
I enjoyed the plot and the concept of this comic book. Lady Mechanika is sort of a role model for me in a sense because of the Steampunk genre this comic is set in. I admire her character because even though she is brutal and dangerous to those who oppose her, she is also very gentle, caring and protects the innocent.
