Bugs: A Skittery, Jittery History

Rate this book
A Skittery, Jittery History isan epic, oversize nonfiction picture book and companion to A Mighty Bite-y History that is all about bugs and their prehistoric predecessors.

Insects are some of the oldest creatures on Earth, evolving well before other land animals, alongside ferns and trees. This epic survey follows bugs and their cousins from their earliest appearance in the Paleozoic era up through today.

Along the way, readers will meet many different kinds of insects from various points in history, such as the trilobite of the Cambrian explosion and the more-recent and familiar termite. The text explores insect skills including camouflage, communication, metamorphosis, and much more, and a bug hall of fame captures the smallest, largest, fastest, and cutest bugs around today.

With lush, colorful illustrations from Gordy Wright and meticulous research from author Miriam Forster, A Skittery, Jittery History is sure to delight bug enthusiasts, science fans, and any reader who loves to discover new wonders about the world around them.

Another informative, bed-time read .

Things I loved:

- The illustrations are super engaging and well done.

- The information is easily dissectible.

- The practical ways at the end on how to handle bugs while also cultivating and respecting them.

Things I think would have made the book better:

- Labeling the bugs more clearly. There would be a primary bug, then others mentioned, and it wasn’t always clear which was which.

- Pronunciation guides. A lot of the words are scientific, so having that would have made it even more reader-friendly, especially for kids.

Who This Book Is Best For:

- Curious kids who are into bugs and nature.

- Kids who may even be scared of bugs

- Parents and educators looking for informative but still engaging nonfiction.

- Readers who want to learn , but want to have fun while doing it.

Final Thoughts:

Educational, visually strong, and a solid read. Just needed a little more clarity in labeling and pronunciation to make it even better.

Bugs is an enjoyable oversized picture book that details the history of bugs & insects. Each chapter is divided into different groups and perfectly describes not only their prehistoric records but also their ecology. Added in these texts are also little annotations for readers to give a try in learning to comprehend the different kinds of insects and how to identify them. Additionally, there are vibrant illustrations in each chapter that captures the beauty of many creepy crawlies.

To learn about bugs is to understand their skittery, jittery history.

Super fun, visual book about a surprisingly under-explored topic: paleoentomology. Insects and arthropods in general are just the gift that keeps on giving.
