A half Gypsy lord, a too-proper lady with a once broken and untrusting heart, a treasure to be found, and a wild stallion to tame--the Harwood house is not a household that knows anything of proper conduct.
Penelope Harwood has no time for romantic daydreams. That led her father into financial ruin, and left her heartbroken. But with her father again investing unwisely, she is forced to turn to Lord Nevin, a man who seems to be set on making amends to her family. But how can she let go of past hurts in order to trust in her own dreams and heart once again?
With the stigma of being half Gypsy to overcome, Christopher Dawes, now Lord Nevin, seeks to restore his name and the Harwood fortune stolen by his late uncle. But he runs up against the pride and anger of the eldest daughter. Driven by duty, Lord Nevin sets his will against hers, but when his desire to help turns into a desire for this strong-willed woman, Christo must step outside the bounds of proper manners. He must come to terms with his own passions if he is to ignite those in the woman he loves.
Shannon Donnelly's writing has won numerous awards, including a RITA nomination for Best Regency, the Grand Prize in the "Minute Maid Sensational Romance Writer" contest, judged by Nora Roberts, RWA's Golden Heart, and others. Her work has repeatedly earned 4½ Star Top Pick reviews from Romantic Times magazine, as well as praise from Booklist and other reviewers, who note: "simply superb"..."wonderfully uplifting"....and "beautifully written."
In addition to her Regency romances, she has had novellas published in several anthologies, has had young adult horror stories published and is the author of several computer games.
Penelope Harwood is the sensible one in her family. Her father has squandered the family fortune on hare-brained schemes and her mother is too ill and frail to deal with it.
Two men come by with another "investment opportunity" for her father, though this one might not be as it seems.
I found Penelope to be stiff even for a Regency-era character. This didn't grab me as well as most regencies do.
Another Regency romp by Shannon Donnelly, part of her "Proper" Trilogy. Very satisfying and entertaining, once you accept the premise of a love story between a Romany Lord and a very "proper" spinster. I've read and enjoyed all three of the books, and am going back to reread the first I encountered, A Proper Mistress. That one is the best of the three and even includes some nice recipes for lagniappe. Great choices for a lazy, cloudy day spent mostly in bed, reading between naps.
This is a sweet romance. Christo & Penelope had a lot to overcome and at times I wondered how they'd get past it. They did with a very satisfying HEA. P.S.- I loved all the horse stuff.
