The intriguing and at times unsettling story of Deirdre Flye – code named Dragonfly, a grit and nails woman who owns a security company catering to the rich and famous. No one knows about her past training as an Assassin at a cult establishment called Stone House which had burned down under mysterious circumstances.
An inquisitive local police officer suspects that there is more to Deidre than meets the eye and suspects her of her assassin connections. When her current security case takes a sinister turn, Deidre finds that she needs to confront her evil past while at the same time protecting her future.
Raised to be a cold, heartless assassin in a cult where spells are routinely performed to torture and control, and cruel exercises are demanded with the goal of making people stronger, Deirdre struggles with her true identity. She finds herself discovering her own true humanity as she struggles to protect an innocent child whose life is in danger as the result of evil forces.
The dialog is at times, a bit choppy “ I want to bed you.” and “Am I alive or dead?” but there is plenty of action that moves the plot along.
“Deirdre, are you going to let them take me? When the time comes, are you going to try to save me?
Lora's expression was too intense. Tears swelled in her eyes and one trickled down the tan face and dripped from her chin onto her shirt. Deirdre didn't want to wipe it away, didn't want the physical contact with such a pure soul. After all Deirdre was raised to be a weapon, raised evil.
“I'll do everything I can to keep you safe.”
Magic spells, intrigue, an old legend involving a sacrificing a child which would then lead to a return of power, and stealing of souls - Magic Rising: Dragonfly has a little bit of everything to keep you on the edge of your seat. It is an entertaining read with a satisfying conclusion that leaves you wondering where Deirdre is going to go next.

this book is definitely worth reading and reviewing! i got this book as a digital ebook from my library. i borrowed it based on the cover and blurb. i didnt really think much of it until a few days later i began reading it. i couldnt stop! i read it in two days! here is a summary and my general thoughts on the book:
The heroine of the novel is Deirdre Flye, a sassy fiesty woman with her own security company working for the elite society providing them with security at social events and such. Deirdre has a mysterious past which arouses suspicion from a cop who wants to know the truth about her training as an assassin at stone house. her past comes back to haunt her literally and she realises that her nemesis, Niam who she thought had been consumed by the fire which she started is still alive. Niam was her leader at Stone House, a boarding school like no other where children and adults alike are taught how to be assassins. he took pleasure in torture which she thought she had escaped ten years ago. the jealous cop afraid of Deidre besting him, digs around her volatile past in an attempt to tarnish her reputation. Deirdre uncovers the truth about her mothers death and confides in friends as she embarks on a perilious ride to stop her past from haunting her once and for all. armed and loaded, nothing will stop her.
what i really liked about the book was Deirdre. she is an amazing character, tough and resilient as she was taught to be at Stone House. her discovery of emotions such as sadness and empathy is bittersweet and i really love the way she has a tough exterior but a soft, emotional and feminine core. this is evident through the tumulous discoveries about herself. im glad that finally in the end she actually does discover herself as a human with feelings and passions, rather than a cold, detached assassin as she was taught to be, and learns her worth as a person. its a story with plenty of kick-ass scenes and leather but its also, in my opinion, a story a self discovery under the guise of a paranormal urban cover. amazing from start to finish! 5 stars from me! ;)
